Before The Terror Can End, See How It All Began
Anthony Perkins, Henry Thomas and Olivia Hussey star in this chilling prequel to the classic Hitchcock thriller.
A seemingly rehabilitated Norman Bates (Perkins, The Black Hole) is drawn to a late night radio show where the host (CCH Pounder, Tales From The Crypt Presents: Demon Knight) encourages him to share his views on the topic of matricide. Reliving his childhood, Norman recounts his trials of a young boy (Henry Thomas, Ouija 2) living with his widowed schizophrenic mother (Hussey, the original Black Christmas). These haunting memories are more than just disturbing visions of the past; they threaten to rekindle his killing urge in this spine-tingling thriller directed by Mick Garris (The Stand, Masters of Horror, The Fly 2).

My favorite part of this movie was towards the end, where Norman has his wife alone and helpless with him inside the old house, and he's about to try to kill her to prevent his offspring from being born, and possibly ending up a deadly aberration like him. But then he hesitates at the site of his demented expression in the knifes reflection, and the wife uses that moment to tearfully talk him out of it, and help him connect once again to his true goodness and mercy. And finally, the humanity in him wins out, and he drops the knife, and they both tearfully embrace. . And then he sets the entire house afire to try to vanquish the hold his awful past has over him, and exorcise the demons of his mind once and for all, but in the process stirs up imaginary ghosts of some of his past victims, who return to torment him one last time, before he manages to just barely escape the conflagration with his own life. Frankly, up till that point, I thought the movie was kind of wishy-washy, especially the way it just recycles the music from the original "Psycho" instead of coming up with a unique score of its own (like the previous two sequels had). If only the rest of the movie could have been as brilliant as the ending (which actually DID have original music), I think this would have likely been the best of the "Psycho" sequels. As it is, "Psycho II" is still my favorite.

This movie had one of if not the most satisfying end to a franchise i've seen, not counting the remake and Bates Motel, while not great, Psycho 4's ending was so much worth it, Norman is finally free from his demons that cost him a good portion of his life and sanity.

the movie would be alot better if Norman was still in the asylum and was telling this story to a doctor.. he gets put away for 22 years after Psycho1 but only put away for 5-10 after Psycho3?? the logic makes absolutely no sense! also the sheriff at the end of Psycho3 even says to Norman that "He will never get out again" so to have Norman free in Psycho4 is just dumb and isnt logically possible. if Psycho4 was about Norman telling the story while still in the asylum and talking about his childhood and killing his mother along with a few victims and have the movie end with the doctors taking norman back to his room after documenting the story and have him sit on his bed look into the camera smile at it ends. im not a filmmaker by any means but i am a massive Psycho fan and have been since i was young and to me i feel this would have been a better plot than what we got.

My opinion was that they never should have fleshed out the character of Mrs. Bates like that, by showing an actual actress playing her in flashbacks, because it demystified her too much. But they at least got an actress who did a superb job of playing her! The mania and enthusiasm with which she plays the character is just the right compliment to Anthony Perkin's performance of Norman, without upstaging him.

I prefer psycho lV over Bates Motel. I hoped for the show to be a horrific reimagining of the movie in a tv medium, as has been done by shows like ''Hannibal'' '' The exorcist'' and '' Ju on origins'' However bates motel wasn't even a real horror show. It honestly felt much more like ''Twin peaks'' ''Gotham'' and ''Riverdale'' in terms of being a cheesy unrealistic soap. And it wound up being a major let down for me.

Pretty good. Not as good as Psycho 1-3. But it had a cool idea behind it. Plus Anthony Perkins was great as always as well as Olivia Hussey. still don't feel this would be canon though since there is no way they would have let him out of the institution this time. So I consider it an alternative end to the story whereas 3 would be the canon ending.

The movie could have been so much better if it was more respectful to the mythology already established for Norman's past in the previous two sequels, and had also gone into Mrs. Spool's back story. I consider "Psycho III" to be the true conclusion to this series myself, but I still grudgingly keep this one on my DVD shelf as well, because it still has some merits to it.

@@KevinJohnson-hy4ocI think it came into play for Norma. I think it’s possible she had incestual feelings or the kind of obsessive boy mom behavior where women will hate any girl their son dates. Pleased to see Olivia Hussey in this version. Always have liked her, but the image of her character is not a good one, and when we learned his Aunt raised him as her own, because her sister was young and crazy as him, revealed in P2, interesting choice for her role. Yes I thought Norman would never be a free man again , after P3. All interesting, but hard for me to watch sometimes, but a classic.

One thing I didn't like about the mother's portrayal in this movie is you never get much of a sense of a good side to this woman. I keep remembering the scene in "Psycho II" where Norman was tearfully talking about the nice things his mother used to do for him, but almost everytime you see her in "Psycho IV", she's screaming and yelling at him and making his life miserable! There had to have been a significant good side to this woman, too, for Norman to have loved her so much despite all the mental abuse she was inflicting on him, that he felt so guilty and tormented over killing her, but you just don't get a sense of that from this movie. It's problems like that that make me wish Tom Holland had written this screenplay.

Psycho III was .... eh.... repetition and less scary (but at the end of movie when they showed norman face disguised with his mother clothes and his face expression was fantastic and creepy too). The end scene when he was in police car again and his last scary smile , they should ended right there and no more other remakes . I still didn't watched the psycho IV but obviously its going to be boring And psycho (1998) too
