I used to work at place with a similar uptick in late June and early December. Everyone hired is told that no long form vacations will be approved during those times of year. A day or two for a weekend trip. Sure. But if you want to go out of country or otherwise be off for a long while. Well. Then wait till off season when every body else in town does it. Sounds like this place should have a similar policy.

@Jack Russelle Lewis An extremely infectious virus with a death rate of roughly 1.2% would be a cause of anxiety for many, and for good reason since we weren't all that sure as to how dangerous the virus really was. And, also, Long Covid sucks and isn't all that rare, so a "Low" death rate doesn't mean that everybody else who contracted it properly recovered. I can see why the OP was annoyed with the kids. By exposing themselves and others to the virus, they were putting people at risk of contracting it. If enough people or the wrong people caught the virus, it likely would have spread like wildfire, so a lot of people would have ended up sick, some would have ended up with Long Covid, and a few may have even died. Being anxious about people acting stupid during COVID times isn't silly, especially when the people acting stupid could then infect hundreds or even thousands of others if they caught COVID.

Story 1: It is the restaurant manager/owner's duty to ensure staffing to the best of their ability by hiring sufficient staff and to keep reservations to a manageable level. If two extra buildings are not enough space they are clearly overbooking out of sheer greed. None of this was on OP. OP was well within their right to take their approved vacation and see their family. The manager should have been more careful about staffing, scheduling, and accepting reservations, and had no right to freak out and vandalize OP's property like that.

However, past history of 15+ years in retail, I cannot stress enough how insanely stressful retail/restaurant businesses are during holidays. A couple years ago I was working a really physically demanding job, and it wasn't uncommon for me to pass out cold for a few hours after getting home. My bf had wanted to call and talk with me about plans we'd made for the weekend, but when he did I was out cold. When I woke up later and saw his missed call and a few messages, I called him back and apologised. His response? "It's okay, I just wanted to make sure you're alright. How are you feeling?"

Story 2: OP is worried they were a bad friend, because they didn't turn a blind eye and give special treatment, but the other guy is the bad friend for trying to make them turn a blind eye and give them special treatment. If you know your friend is in a position of power, don't try and use them to do stuff that you know will force them to choose between you or their job. That is an asshole move, especially if they already begged you not to put them in that position. My dad used to be a security guard at a local superstore, and got me a job there as a cleaner. So I was great friends with a fair few of them, and would have a joke and a laugh, but I would of never considered putting them in the position of having to turn a blind eye to anything. The day I was fired (petty bs with managers who didn't like me, and who then made security spend weeks watching me for an excuse to fire me, but could still only use a video of me, a cleaner, taking something off camera to throw away, "Suspicion of theft by consumption" 😂 clearly a death penalty even if I had devoured it while off camera) the security I was friends with felt super guilty about not warning me, and having to escort me out of the store, but I didn't blame them for a second, n we're still good friends to this day. Now if I'd been pissy, and expected them to choose me, over the job that puts food on their family's table and a roof over their heads, THEN I would of been an asshole.

S1. Op has no right to feel guilty for this asshole. The manager could have done something other this to combat the stress. Managers could have hired part times, put a limit on customer per day (because it was more this year than others), and more. Manger had no right to scream at op with threats then to their house and destroyed it when he gave the go head. An employee should have got his ass years ago for his constant cancel of vacation days 24 hours or less before said vacation days.

1st story: While I can sympathize with the manager also having a hard time, it is ultimately their responsibility to make sure there are enough people available to handle the increased workload in a seasonal high demand situation. Even if it wasn’t a predictable situation, like Christmas season, the correct cause of action could never possible by to travel to your employees home and vandalize it… Even if given the best faith possible, OP acted entirely within reason and the manager was the one being unreasonable.

The first one is pretty simple, the vacation should have never been approved in the first place. Sounds like the business does over half their business in one month, and it's like that every year. He should have known that they were going to be busy.

first story, manager clearly had free time to go trash someone's property. secondly, the business/boss is at complete fault, if they are struggling with so many customers during the holiday, they clearly have a staffing shortage issue, so it's the boss' fault for trying to squeeze as much profit out of each individual employee by having a shortage of staff; so the obvious solution is this restaurant needs to hire more staff, at the very least temp/seasonal employees if they don't need the extra staff year round. So the boss only has themself to blame, or if they aren't the owner of the restaurant, then their anger and hatred needs to be focused on the owners or whoever doesn't allow the staffing of additional workers to help with the busy season.

why is that even a question in the first one? why on earth would you feel bad about that knowing he likes to wait last minute to cancel peoples vacations, he plans that so he can do stuff to their property and threaten their job.

Use this as a story My mom and dad broke up I had to live with my Grandma and Grandpa. Because at the time we needed to work to get money so about 2 years later. My mum and my aunty had a fight. Because my aunty wanted to celebrate her birthday on the day but my mom needed the time to work so my mom said no we can celebrate it a few days after. But then my aunty started yelling at us then she grabbed my mom and they fighted . Then me my mom and my sister got kicked out of the house. That day we moved into our new house where things where normal. For a few years then my mom got a new bf. A few years later My sis got angry at me and we went to our grandparents house she started crying before I was about to tell my grandparents what happened. My aunty said to my mum what happened to her but she actually said your a bad mother then my mom came and tried to pick us up my grandpa didn't let my mom we got up but my grandpa said sit back down he was still verry strong so I sat down he said go outside and come back when when your calmed down she called the police and andjria she came back and said can I have them back he grabbed her by the arm and said get out of my house they came andjria said come we left andjria slammed the door we are not allowed to se them till we are 18 it's been 2 years I told my mom to make my dad stop showering me he said no and blocked my mom only I can talk to him and my sis he said I heard you want me to stop showering me he said I'm makeing a big fight between my mom and him he said how can I trust you because if you show me then I'll stop I said how can you trust me if you don't let me do it myself then I never heard from him again

Has a history of screwing people over by revoking vacation at the day it was schedules, does indeed revoke on the day of leave, threatens your livelihood if you disobey, trashes home because you ignored the threat. No sympathy should ever be given, that is the brain of a psychopath that couldn't do anything to you, so they took it out on your home. You should be happy they even got prison time, as karmic retribution for others the manager screwed over.
