Dimash had to do this performance from his home studio in Kazachstan due to the pandemic. The lyrics are ftom an anonymous young man who was forced to fight in World War 1. It is his goodbye to his home region around Samal mountain. The string instrument is a qobyz. Did you hear the wind, running water, wolves, dogs, birds and the echoing mountains? Did you see the caravan of soldiers setting off on their journey to the war front? All your assumptions about his personality, intelligence, attitude about his art are true.

You were right with the many cultures you heard. Kazakhstan is located right in the middle between Europe, East Asia and the Middle East and had received influences from all these cultures. He is setting the scene in the Kazakh Steppe and sings the song of a young Kazakh man in his early twenties who was forcefully drafted into the army of the Russian Empire to fight in World War I. He describes how he is reluctantly dragging his feet as he wanders towards the city of Omsk, leaving his beloved homeland and his elderly parents behind, feeling worried about them and being homesick already. The video was recorded in his home studio with two fellow Kazakh musicians and live-streamed for the Tokyo music festival, which he couldn't attend due to the Coronavirus pandrmic. You will meet the Qobyz (that is the string instrument) player, Olzhas Qurmanbek, in another Kazakhstan-themed video of Dimash, Qairan Elim. I am sure that you will like that song as well. It has English subtitles, so you are not left to guess what the song is about.

Dimash is the best singer on the planet.! Here's the lyrics to Samaltau: Mountain breeze Versions: #1#2 Mountain breeze, my amazing country, my endless lake, What days await me as a soldier, You keep coming into my mind from time to time, My amazing homeland, where I was born and raised I wasn't riding, I was walking, Even slower than walking, Been strolling for 15 days In the direction of Omsk I'm at the age of two cycles, the year of the cow By the will of Fate, I went farther away Mountain breeze, my amazing country, you're left behind From the hollow field, we are the only ones I had parents, Of progressed age, Since this song was written, It's been 16 years. Dimash is from Kazakhstan, between Russia and China. This concert should have been in Tokyo, but because of Covid, it is in Dimash’s home studio. This is a Kazakh song, a plaintive cry from a young man recruited by the Russians to go to war wondering if he’ll ever see his family and village again, during a grueling long March. Yes , Dimash is extremely patriotic. Another beautiful traditional Kazakh song he sings is Daididau. If you look at the Bastau version of Daididau, you will see to which extent he goes out to represent his country; it is amazing! You can keep watching, your naivity will not be spoiled. He is always the same, always humble, and “lives” every song like no one else. That is why he has become popular in every country of the world, through KZbin. You don’t find these qualities very often in today’s singers. There is a video on KZbin about one of his fans, a lady from New Zeland, who has cancer and she found Dimash and got better after listening to him. She decided to take a trip to Kazakhstan to go visit his country and I am not sure how it happened, but Dimash met her personally and invited her for a meal at his house with his whole family, then to a contest where he was a judge. How many stars would do that? Here is the video;kzbin.info/www/bejne/faiqnKdurpx6i68. Dimash has a deep respect for elders and children, he even got out of an American singing competition that he was winning, because they made him compete against children; he had asked before, they told him he wouldn’t, they had lied to him; he forfeited the million dollar price because it was against his values. That just increased my respect for him a million times! Here is that video; kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJ-ZlaCbp5uWjLc

Dimash is not Russian and everyone in the room is Kazakh as are all the instruments. The song is sung from the point of view of a 28 year old Kazakh who has been forced to March to Russia to fight in a foreign war that has nothing to do with his country. He worries about his aging parents who he may never see again. There is no native American or Japanese influence here, its purely Kazach. Dimash was invited to participate in the Tokyo Jazz Festival this year on his 26th Birthday on 24th May and was very disappointed when it was cancelled. However it was reinstated as an online festival and he took part from his music room/studio in his house in Astana, Kazakhstan. After the performances, he also sang SOS here, he spent his birthday with his fans livstreaming on both Instagram then later on KZbin, and it was a very enjoyable time with him chatting to us Dears and also doing a Q&A. Dimash is a native Kazach, who were and in some cases still are a nomadic people, and the instruments have a long history, the Kobyz is a 5,000 year old instrument with two strings made of horsehair, played with a bow also of horsehair. The noises made represent the sounds of the Kazakh Steppe, vast, beautiful plains where the population lived and herded horses which they rode, milked and ate, you hear wolves, and cranes flying overhead. The other instrument is a Kazakh side blown flute called a Sybyzgy makes the sound of birds together with the rainstick, a bamboo pipe filled with tiny pebbles to make the sound of the wind blowing the grasses of the Steppe. The instruments on the wall are various styles of Dombra plus a Jetigen, a 7 stringed Zither and a drum. Hope this is of interest to you, and also this, it's what the song is about www.iias.asia/the-newsletter/article/time-ordeal-story-1916-revolt-central-asia

Imagine you have lived your entire life as a horse lord. The sounds of the 2 stringed instrument and the flute fill your evenings with joy. Imagine the cries of the golden eagles as they preen their feathers in their jesses, awaiting the time to hunt. Imagine the winds sweeping across the plains as you ride your horse toward the mountains, in anticipation of the hunt of the eagles. Hear the winds as they change from a caress to a howling, blowing through the mountain passes as you ride toward hunting grounds and release your eagles to hunt for prey to sustain your family for another season. Then comes the command of a Czar you know nothing of, demanding you fight in a war you are not invested in, with weapons you know nothing of nor how to use, against an enemy you don't even recognize. THANK YOU! You’re SO perceptive! Dimash was born in 1984, only 3 years after Kazakhstan gained its independence from Russia. He’s extremely passionate about his country, and one of his objectives is to elevate his country, and to bring its music to the world. During this quarantine, he is working on an album of Kazakh songs. Correct-he’s not seeking money or fame. I hadn’t thought of this relative to native Americans. I think your analysis is very much on point!

This song it’s from Kazakhstan folklore, and the musicians behind him are from Kazakhstan too, it was performed in Dimash ‘s home studio, because of the pandemic situation.

The wide open steppes, the howling wolves, the cry of the eagle and Dimash's voice - it's the real deal. Your reaction is spot on - Dimash has brought meaning and genuineness to music.

THANKS for your reactions to Dimash!!!!........Samaltau. Samale Mountain is a sad song about a young soldier. He sing about what will happen with his family when He goes away about Mountain and Sea. This a tresure song of kazakhstan and Dimash sing this like no one. The musical instrument is from Kazajistán and name KOBIZ . This live performance with his instrumentalists friends is a firm favourite of mine. His live singing is impeccable like always, even sitting cross legged on a piano stool. Streamed from his home, his music room it wen down a storm at his first appearance at the Tokio Jazz Festival although he was disappointed when it was canceled he was overjoyed when they decided to livestream it. ......Greetings from a Mexican Dear!......❤️🇲🇽🇰🇿

My Dear, Dimash in an interview said that his dreams have no limit and that a man without dreams is like a nightingale without a forest and shows his drawing done at three years old: he on a stage with several musical instruments. At the age of twelve he said in an interview: I want to be a dignified man and be useful to my country through my art, to contribute so that my people are "rich in education and wisdom". That a man can be evaluated first of all for his spirituality. Your parents are renowned musicians and their home was constantly visited by writers, poets, philosophers and musicians. In the ancient Kazakh tradition, he was raised by his grandparents and learned to respect and prioritize the elderly and children. He plays seven instruments and sings in several languages. His main training is opera, but he has a background in pop, jazz, and has given up a place at the Opera Academy to pursue his solo career, he says: I"m a singer crossover, neoclassical. He is graduated from the University is from Aktobe, Kazakhstan, and has performed on stage since the age of two, winning his first musical contest at the age of six. He graduated in Classical Music (Bel Canto) at K. Zhubanov University in 2014. After graduating, he began his studies in Contemporary Music at the National University of Arts in Astana. He graduated in Vocal in 2018 and has a master's in composition currently doing doctorate. Dimash is not an ordinary man, he is a man with high human values: an icon of a new generation that came to break and establish new paradigms in art, in the family, in society, in humanity, through his moral virtues, spiritual intellectual capacity , ethics, altruism. He showed his otherness by giving up the award on the infamous program The Best in the World, where he was humiliated by RuPaul for not wanting to compete with children. . Gratitude for your beautiful and uplifting reactions.

Thank you very much for this reaction. You present a complete different angle of view. Refreshing 😁! Dimash has really great national pride, as all Kasakhs. The musicians are kasakh too. This song is real kasakh folklore. When it comes to Dimash, every song walks first through his soul, then out of his mouth. BTW, his name is pronounced with the emphasis on the „a“,spoken open as in ‚large‘. It’s short for Dinmukhamed. The kasakh people call themselves Eurasiens, not from Asia, not from Europe.

Thank you, yes, Dimash is a genuine person and Artist. Dimash is from Kazakhstan, not Russia. Dimash speaks both Kazakh and Russian languages. The Tokyo Jazz Festival was live stream due to pandemic. Dimash performed “SOS” and this song “Samaltau” from his home studio on a KZbin live-streamed to Tokyo. All performers of the Jazz Festival in Tokyo were on-line live stream. The instrument is National Kazakh instrument called the Kobyz. The instrument and musicians are Kazakh, not Japanese. All of the Songs in Dimash’ repertoire have his input and have a special meaning to him. Dimash’ father had stated in an interview, that Dimash will not perform a song that does not have meaning for him. Dimash first performed this song in China. Luena Autumn (native Kazakh) uploaded the first performance with pinned and descriptive comments (in English) about the song story and about the Kobyz and Dombra instruments. Here is the link to that video, it has English captioned lyrics: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pICtYqNpqtN6maM.

Это Казахстан, товарищ, на 100%. Серьезно, реальный Казахстан, не Монголия, не Россия и никакая не Япония. Это Казахстан. Закрываю глаза и вижу казахские горы. Швейцария это горки, а Казахстан это горы.

Nice reaction to Dimash singing Samaltau, Great performance by Dimash. Loved the traditional instruments as well (kobyz en sybyzgy). The man playing the 2-snared instrument (Kobyz/Qobyz) is also playing in the newest clip by Dimash. Greetings from Amsterdam.

The song is about young Kazakh men who were unexpectedly brought to the Russian Army to participate in the 1st World War... The man of 26 y.o. wrote that song about his feelings. When he is wondering with the troop somewhere far away from his Motherland (Samaltau mountains) in a severe northern land among strange people not knowing why is he here and he is thinking of his old parents whom he can not help now, and he feels so lonely and uncertain... It is a very strong song, I agree. One of my favourites. There is another video with this song (concert one) on KZbin.

Bonjour yes it ‘s kazakh folk song the instrument is kobyz : because of the covid he sing from his studio for the Tokyo Jazz festival ( no it is Kazakhan mid Asia ( sad about 1 war ) :the kazakh people were nomadic people and very close to nature the Dimash studio reminded a little of the configuration of a yurt: it is very shamanic.... piece of art. Different from Russia .. Merci beaucoup à vous 🙏🌹🇫🇷

How special that your shirt almost matches Dimash's shirt. I don't know if you chose to wear it for that purpose, but, if so, it was a nice touch. I enjoyed watching Samaltau with you.
