The thought of applying for a masters degree has been dawning on me, thinking my chances of being selected are very slim. I have little to none experience with working in the psychology field so I’ve been so skeptical as to whether to wait a year so I can find places to volunteer before I apply or not. I’ve also been searching for volunteering places for the past couple of months with no luck. But this video has made me so hopeful 🤍. Thank you so much 🙏🏿.

Thank you so much for your informative videos. They are very helpful. If you don’t mind, could you kindly also share tips and talk about the motivational letters that you had to use for honours applications and master applications. Another question is, was this journey financially and emotionally draining for you ? It took so many years and tuition costs a lot. As much as I dream to be where you are one day, I am so afraid that the money and time that goes into it will become “a waste” if I do not succeed in Masters. Especially during a pandemic right now, it must be so difficult to get internships/community work. With that being said, thank you again for sharing such insightful information. There is not much material for SAn students out there so thank you for your efforts. 🤍
@PsychIRL3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I will definitely put something together to help with motivational letters. I feel it's something relevant not only to honours and masters but beyond because I still have to right motivational letters as we speak. Honestly, it is quite a huge financial burden especially if you don't come from a family that is financially resourced. It was a personal stressor for me especially because it is not easy to get bursaries in undergrad and honours but there are more opportunities in masters. I guess it also depends on the university you attend because I found that when I was at UCT there were a lot more UCT specific bursaries than there were at UKZN. It's a huge sacrifice and there's so much uncertainty but it was worth it in the end, for me, that is.

hey sis. If you do a four year degree of social work in psychology can you apply straight to masters?
@PsychIRL3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nonjabulo, you'd have to check with the universities. I do know some undergrad psych programs that are 4 years include honours and people can apply directly for masters, I'm just not sure about a social work degree even if it included psych.

Can you apply to multiple universities for masters
@lehlohonolomazindo49683 жыл бұрын
This is very helpful. My question is: What should I do when my Hours qualification is more than 10 years old? Is there a way of bridging that 15 year gap?
@PsychIRL3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lehlohonolo, you'd need to check the university requirements and if it is older than what they accept you'd probably need to redo it because contexts and knowledge changes rapidly. You'd need to speak directly with the university you want to apply to they would be better able to give you advice. Also, what you do in those 10 years is also important because it might be linked to the field and you might be credited for experience.

Hi Thulisile, I used an extension of my undergrad research paper which helped rather than having to start an entirely new topic.

How's it for international stuendts to fit in?? Was it easy for them? And were the any international students admitted into Masters?
@PsychIRL3 жыл бұрын
Hi Teboho, I’m not sure the reference to international students is to (so is it students who studied abroad and came to do masters in SA or international students who have been studying in SA throughout their tertiary education). I’m more knowledgeable regarding the latter because we had two in our class and they did exceptionally well. Also not sure what “fit in” means for you.
@teboholiloro56643 жыл бұрын
In terms of finding places in SA where they did their community work and internships. That's my concern
@PsychIRL3 жыл бұрын
@@teboholiloro5664 so that is a challenge to be honest because SA citizens are given first preferences even if you studied in SA (not aware of how it works for students who studied abroad coming into SA, I imagine it is even more challenging especially with needing context specific course). But with that being said, the ones I know did get both internship and comm serv even though they did not get their top preferences.

Hii , may I ask if you had a straight process in becoming a Psychologist or if u took gap years in between ? Alot of people say sometimes age is influences if u get accepted or not . How true is that ?
@PsychIRL3 жыл бұрын
Hi Khosi, I was fortunate enough to go straight from undergrad through to masters and now I'm completing my comm serv without having to ever take a gap year. Yes, it is very competitive to get in and age (which also translates to experience) does impact your chances but with that being said, it is not impossible and I have peers who also got in at more or less the same age as me.

hey how about funding?
@PsychIRL3 жыл бұрын
I found that there's a lot more funding at postgrad level than at undergrad. Also, there are university specific bursaries so the university you are in also determines how much funding you have access to.

I always look forward to your uploads. Can I still apply for masters at prestigious universities like UCT, Rhodes etc. if I completed my honors at UNISA. Also, what is your take on obtaining masters through UNISA. Thank you.
@PsychIRL3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alzonia, you definitely can! UCT and all other universities consider everyone when they take master's students. I also had classmates who studied through UNISA. I also believe doing your masters at any institution that accepts you would be a great learning experience and the learning doesn't stop at masters, you learn a lot more in internship and beyond. I interviewed and interned with people who studied from pretty much all over SA and there's so much I learned from them.

Hi Mboyi, you submit your latest results which would be your last undergrad results with your full transcript. The honours results you can only send once you receive them.

Hi thanks for the video. I wanted to know can someone with an Occupational Therapy degree apply for Masters in Clinical Psychology?
@PsychIRL2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mavvy, as far as my understanding goes no you can't, at least not for the psychology registrations where you need to practice because you need to have a background in psychology and therapeutics. And to have this, you need to have majored in psychology in your undergrad an honours even if for example in undergrad you do social work.
@rjj92272 жыл бұрын
Hi again. In first and second year of the occupational therapy degree there are psychology courses that are the same as the BA psychology undergrad of first and second year. If I took additional courses in psychology for my third year of my Occupational therapy degree would that still put me at a disadvantage to apply for MA Clinical Psychology? Also the Occupational therapy degree is honours equivalent.
