@MsJeanneMarie3 жыл бұрын
I’m American and one of my best friends is Nepali. She often tells me how surprised she is that I and other Americans are so polite or what she considers to be overly polite. Like she says in Nepali culture, when you’re close with someone you don’t need to apologize for small things or ask for things or say excuse me. For example, I ask if it’s okay if I stay at her place when we plan to drink. She always says, “yes, of course! You don’t need to ask!” Or I might say “sorry, I’m late” and she says “you don’t need to apologize for that!”
@chanellee97623 жыл бұрын
I’m American living in India and they also say there is no need to say ‘thank you’ to someone you’re close to. I would say the downside to Americans being so “polite” is that when someone deviates from this and slights us, even without meaning offence, it’s common for so many of us to explode with rage. I hate that. For example, someone not holding the door open for someone and that person going off. You see the same thing happening on the road too often. Also when we do something for someone and expect a thank you but don’t get one, I’ve seen people fly off the handle for that. Hate to say it but I think many times Americans aren’t -actually- polite at all when it really comes down to it. Took me living in India to sort of resent our forced politeness culture.
@MsJeanneMarie3 жыл бұрын
@@chanellee9762 I don’t think Americans are more polite than other cultures. This is how my friend describes but I think it’s just a difference of cultural expectations. All cultures have behaviors they consider polite or rude. Some of them are just different than American behaviors. Anyone who has a disproportionate reaction to a situation isn’t serving themselves well. But it’s acceptable to expect someone who understands this culture to adhere to certain aspects. If I give someone a gift and they toss it aside and say it’s cheap, that’s considered rude by American and I’d guess most other cultural standards. That’s because it doesn’t adhere to our expectations of what we consider polite or respectful. No one is forcing anyone to be polite, but if you chose not to be, people are likely to feel hurt and disrespected. Conversely, when my Nepali friend doesn’t say thank you or excuse me or something like that, I don’t even notice. It’s no problem because we ARE close and I already know she cares about me and respects me. So, I completely understand why Nepali and Indian cultures operate that way. It works and it makes total sense. Politeness isn’t a bad thing. It’s just a way of showing other people that you respect them. Different cultures express that in different ways.
@CrimsonEclipse3 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the upbringing of the American because just in the US there are different behaviors and cultural styles. Depending on which part of the US the behaviors and mannerism are totally different and it's also the same as well if you have religious backgrounds too. It shapes the behaviors. But I would agree some Americans are actually very polite. My husband is one if them. And when I took him to China people were suprise how polite he was to offer his seat to the elderly on public transportation and open doors for people.

Yes and no, the grammar is a lot easier in comparison to many European language families (imo). Learning to listen and speak can happen within a year, and can improve thereafter. It is a lot better to learn within the country, it becomes less daunting when you are in the language environment and need to speak to do most things. I'm really glad you mentioned this notion that people struggling with another language are viewed as child-like or unintelligent. I taught English as a second language to kids for years, so I'm very aware that some extremely intelligent kids can struggle with learning a new language and then brand new teachers assume those same kids are general underachievers. I myself am struggling with learning the language of my husband's family and it kills me that they treat me like I'm stupid because I can't communicate on their level.

I remember when I was a child, I would be in the kitchen when my grandmother and mom made roti (Indian flatbread) and wanted to make it too. So my granny and my mom used to keep an extra rolling pin and the thing where you make it on, they would give me some flour and a bit of dough. Which would make me occupied and that’s was a great way to interact with me. Plus I learned to make rotis. That’s one way. In my family my cousins who want too cook they would give them a spatula, a pan and some vegetables to play with whilst they cooked. Could have an eye on the kids to and finish their work too. That was a great bonding time too. That’s some stuff which works well.

As a parent of an autistic child i can tell you that shaming and blaming is so common. Even with therapists! My favorite yet frustrating moment was always when the therapist would direct me to the waiting room to work with my child 'so mommy can learn that she doesn't always need to be on top of her child'. Every time i would be called back in after a few minutes by a now sweating and nervous therapist to come help me with my child... i am not a 'helicopterparent' , i am a mom of a special needs child and i happen to be the translator and mediator between my child and the outside world.

@@shelbielynne9609 i always appreciated his jokes and he's a funny guy. Everyone has their flaws but we can appreciate the good parts while acknowledging the bad. That's my take at least. Plus when I consider how he has lived (from what we have seen) or what effect his upbringing had on him, I can't dislike him because of how it can sometimes come out. It's a new situation for him to get money to support his family so I guess I understand his reactions which might seem deplorable to others. For kids, consistency is the biggest thing. You cant correct and respond on occasion when they're doing something potentially dangerous (climbing onto the counter and throwing dishes at the age of 3). Yeah, it takes a while for standards to set in but how can anyone learn what the standards are if you dont teach and maintain it. Just like how theres standards at whatever job someone has, you learn and adapt to it by the consistency. If the standard is rarely enforced, then you never really know what standard you are suppose to be hitting

I think a book "Kids are worth it" by Barbara Coloroso would be a good read for Deavan. I found it very helpful when my kids were growing up. Deavan might be considered a jellyfish parent. The opposite would be a brickwall parent. In the middle somewhere is a backbone parent. What you were suggesting "give her things to on the floor" maybe explain the countertop is too dangerous would be something a backbone parent would do. A brickwall would yell "Get down" and if asked why would say "because I said so". A jellyfish would get frustrated and say she just won't listen to me and leave her on the counter

I had family visit my new appartment and my cousin's child had opened a drawer in my kitchen and had taken out a gigantic butcher knife and threw it across the kitchen. I was horrified, and immediately acted, and took the knife away. I didn't have a very close relationship with my cousin, so I refrained from scolding them for leaving the child unattended or their 3 year old at the time.

Back where I come from (Austria) we usually eat bacon raw. I mean. We use it for cooking too but some black bread with bacon is very much a snack here. It is preserved with special salts AND smoked, at least the ones we make. Actually one of these things that have been around since... Like medival times, helping to make the food last long.
