"Psychiatry's most fundamental characteristic is its ignorance," wrote Raymond Dolan in his recent review of psychiatric literature. In this episode, UCLA professor Dr. David Cohen shares an excerpt from this study and others. He also describes the big picture, bringing to light the many elements that constitute the modern day mental health so-called care. In sum, psychiatry is scientifically empty. The field is comprised of psychiatrists, who primarily act as drug prescribers, who justify their practices on the basis of "silly theories that are continually refuted," as Dr. Cohen puts it.

This interview has brought me to tears. I've been saying this for years. But the "fun" thing is, as a patient. You're deemed extra psychotic for stating these very same facts. Just take your pills, and shut up, has been the attitude that I've been faced with. It is no small thing. Because i was already sectioned forcibly, and refusing medication was deemed a offence. Bless you guys for putting this out there. I hope more will follow. I will never claim that i know the solution to what has been deemed "mental illness" but i most definitely know that society has been dealing with it wrongfully. I won't go into speculation if it has been done on purpose or just out of ignorance. Either way, the discussion has to be opened up for a solution to this issue. Thanks again. I'm just a "patient" who has been reading a lot, and doing my own research. Which would have never resulted to any serious inquiry. So I'm completely dependent on people who have the credentials to speak out on this subject.🙌

I put in a complaint after they wrote obvious lies over drugged me and told me I was lucky to be alive because of this. Then encouraged my abusive family to abuse me the best bit was they ran around telling everyone that I was insane and had dementia and had cognitive problems so don’t know what is going on so they need to get questions answered by me for their records. At the same time I am working and having a peaceful life I have thrown all the mules of the industry out of my life. Their answer was and I quote “ under the circumstances we have behaved reasonably” in short they are not just unethical but criminal .

Good to know your Michel Foucault . I had a psychiatrist pressure me to take a drug, an anti-psychotic, three times. I had been taking prozac for depression. I told her that i had no psychosis. She said, "I am the Doctor, you are the patient" it was crazy. I ended up trying it, and i had to leave work and rush home because of the dizziness, and then i began to hallucinate unlike any drug ever did to me, and i had done psychedelics... it was insane. The doctors get kickbacks for new drugs.... i;ve heard up to 1k per rx//// wow. closest to what i imagine schizophrenia is like.... it was called geodone...and a long time ago now...but i'll never forget it, and i hope that i never take a psych med ever again.....wow. Talk about pressure- she claimed that it was "for prevention". LOL i mean really.

I really appreciate your series of interviews questioning the fundamental basis that much of psychiatry is built on from diagnosis to the use of drugs and pharmaceuticals. I wonder if you have ever interview Fritzi Horstman who runs the compassion in prison project as you seem to have done alot of work in the prison population. I have to say I find Joanna Moncrieff is a little more articulate when it comes to talking about the actual actions of these drugs,in effect being tools for sedation.

The passage from Raymond Dolan and colleagues in 'Neuron' is so stark and damning. The latter words of the passage that Dr. Cohen quotes, starting from “[psychiatry’s] most fundamental characteristic is its ignorance” and after, are not actually from Dolan's pen, but from Andrew Scull's in his TLS piece titled ‘The less you know'. And Scull, in turn, is echoing Owen Whooley’s book “On the Heels of Ignorance”. This is what Dolan meant when he and his team wrote "It remains difficult to refute a critique...". That critique is Scull's (whom they cite), not their own. Just wanted to clarify that. As always, thank you for this fascinating conversation, Nick! Dr. Cohen was edifying on so many levels. Maybe you could have a chat with Owen Whooley? He seems well positioned to answer the question you put to another guest (I think it was Bruce Levine): how has psychiatry kept recovering from its failures and maintaining its legitimacy throughout its long history? I wonder this too. I think some of Whooley's ideas match some of Levine's, e.g. that when MDs who actually practice medicine don't know what to do with their most perplexing and unmanageable patients, they need a place to send them, and that place has always been the psychiatry unit. But I'm sure Whooley can speak at length on this question of why the field never suffers lasting disrepute.

It’s like a child’s game of let’s pretend. I moved into a condo association with connections to corrupt cops and power hungry neighbors. I was stalked and harassed during walks like I was a dangerous criminal. Neighborhood watches are making a game of it. Church groups will stalk targets in Minnesota and play mind games to provoke you into talking to police. When you claim you are being watched an stalked by large groups, which they are organizing, you will probably deemed paranoid. There are lots of websites cluing targets into this “game.” The perpetrators call it a game. I was told this and who put my info into their target list. True story. Never trust the police and lie and play dumb. It is about all you can do. It just so happened I was out of town on a relaxing writers retreat and lo and behold there was a Forensic Psy there who wanted to talk to and get to know me…

You don't have to offer an alternative for a holocaust, you have to oppose it whether you have an alternative or not. 100 milions of people being drugged with neurotoxins thst prevent them from healing and from being human and that kills more people than it saves is a holocoast.
