I always interpreted Boyd's breakdown as a learning experience for Raz and it's what facilitates his growth later on in the game and in the sequel where he's more attentive, accommodating, and more empathetic with the people whose minds he jumps into. He's ultimately a well-intentioned kid who genuinely wants to help people but he got in over his head with Boyd due to not treating him with the empathy and respect he so desperately needed.
@mackielunkey2205 Жыл бұрын
I really liked how Raz has a "innocence to experience" character arc. His arc one of the best character arcs in video games that involve the main character of a series (or even a single game) changing their values like how their video games are changing values, and become better people in the process. I love how Psychonauts does it: in the first game, Raz is surrounded in an environment with a bunch of kids who aren't as smart or confident as him; he's a prodigy compared to them, and not expected to understand the rules. But in the second, he's in an environment surrounded by equals who are just as (and even more) gifted and trickier than him, and it gives him a genuine challenge, with different rules that he must adapt to, though he eventually does prove himself and did what other Psychonauts couldn't do in the past.

I'm guessing the reason why the bad mood can only be defeated with clairvoyance is due to input from the psychologists who were brought in for the game. The way to combat bad moods in real life is to use empathy and help the person talk through their feelings, NOT lashing out at them- so its good for realism and symbolism, not so good for gameplay

There's not that many Bad Moods in the game though, so overall they weren't a drag on combat.

Yeah, making it that way is smart because of how it works in real life, so it's kind of goofy to argue that it's stupid when it was made that way to facilitate better consideration for mental health and such after saying that you like how it was made to be more considerate of those things.

The enemy design is one of my personal favorite things. Every wonky creature you’re fighting isn’t just designed to be the average goblin, it’s an ACTUAL CONCEPT of the HUMAN BRAIN. You’ve got the standard-issue censors that just want you out cause you’re not supposed to be there, you’ve got the ooey gooey doubts that hold you back and slow you down, you’ve got the absolutely overwhelming and terrifying *HOLY FUCK* panic attacks, stuff is just great. Like, animation, design, everything.

I feel that the Bad Mood necessitating Clairvoyance to beat them makes for some good combat encounters when they are accompanied by other enemies, meaning that you probably won't try to take them until the rest are gone, and the Bad Mood has some mean attacks that are harder to dodge when they're not alone. Their basic projectile bounce around the place and sometimes feels like it's homing in on you and their super-attack has a higher chance of hitting you when you're distracted. As for Clairvoyance outside of combat, I feel that they should still indicate that we should use it when it's something that isn't gameplay related, like seeing the evolution of the bacon guy's vision after his hunger for the stuff has been satiated or what the Ball of Light sees right after it gets into a body again.

Gamergate is simply not what he and every journalist under the sun has portrayed it as for the last 7 years. But of course, being it was a consumer revolt directed against those with direct editorial control over the narrative, a narrative was spun in their favor. However they haven't ever forgot the painful scar of a large amount of people saying 'Enough is enough with corrupt nepotistic so-called enthusiast press flagrantly push IDPOL in every review they make, take money from corporations or literally have sex with indie devs for favorable reviews or to shoot down competing titles for the same reason. Enough with people that openly hate video games and the people that play them because they think they're better than both because they have a journalism degree.'

People don't really care about the facts though, just whatever fits nicely into their narrative and after enough time has passed seeing anybody still be passionate about it paints them immediately in a bad light because the sentiment is that everyone else has already moved on. I want to highlight the importance of Double Fine taking the time to acknowledge in that disclaimer about how the game is not making fun of mental illness, but in a way celebrating the abilities to empathize and to heal. Not to get into the weeds but I am diagnosed with moderate PTSD (downgraded last year from "acute or severe" PTSD, woo! /s), and at times I find certain games to be difficult to play because of it. But the fact that Double Fine intentionally makes the game about finding yourself amidst chaos and reconciling in a healthy way is really important. I can even say that Psychonauts in some way helped with my own case! Still waiting to hear if my therapist agrees. But yeah, thanks Double Fine.

If you go frame by frame through 8:12 you can actually see the drawing of the tooth guy stay in place for like a frame while the background popsicle stick moves riiight before the scene change. So I'm guessing what he did was film the two popsicle sticks on the one shot, with the one on the right just being a blank piece of paper, then drew the tooth guy digitally with a realistic marker-like brush and tracked it onto the plane of the paper with a convincing blending mode. Although there's a weird line in the top right corner that moves with the drawing, so it looks like there's something being masked that extends past the paper's edges which kind of confuses me because I'm not sure why you'd need to mask anything on there at all.

this is the video that convinced me to take actual interest in psychonauts, and now i couldn't be more obsessed. you summed up the inherent kindness of the sequel so well; as a mentally ill person myself, it meant the world to me to see them drop that weird veneer of edginess almost entirely in favor of the genuine heart and sympathy that psychonauts 2 possesses. we're all lucky that this game didn't just come back: it grew up along the way.

This game has always been on my list of, "maybe I'll try it at one point...". Really needed that little push to check it out, and even attempt the first. And this video definitely was that push! You can really tell how much effort went into the art design and writing. It is in my top 2 games of the year so far, and it is probably the winner as I am still riding a high off of literally just finishing Guardians of the Galaxy which also has a super colorful art design and good writing, not as clever as Psychonauts though.

Ya know Noodle, it’d be cool that when Silksong comes out and you’ve gotten time to play and enjoy the game, you could do a video talking about recent metroidvania games, & talk about Silksong & Metroid: Dread. I know you’d probably not want to do a full review of Dread, and I get the feeling that in a video, you’d wanna keep thoughts on Dread short and quick, so that feels like a good opportunity to talk about your thoughts on both good games. Edit: Actually, something even better you could do (and before Silksong comes out) is talking about recent games from franchises thought dead, like Psychonauts (that would be brief), Metroid: Dread, and others. Hell if you take long enough maybe you could add F-Zero to that list. Maybe you could even mention Kickstarter games like Omori, where people weren’t even sure the game was going to exist.

I only recently discovered this channel and I am thoroughly enjoying every video. Your sense of humour, animation style (and yes, I agree with you that 60 FPS is unnecessary and often detrimental), personality, and way of explaining all put a smile on my face. I was on the fence about this game but will *definitely* get it now! ...and a couple of the ol' NFS games too come to think of it. What I find endearing is how inherently good natured and empathetic the series is as a whole. The first game, despite lacking in proper representation of mental health, and containing lots of "edgy" jokes, still has a very heartwarming story underneath it all.

I think part of the reason the gay representation was so successful is because of how subtle it was. I didn't even know Bob was gay until the wedding scene, whereas in most other pieces of media they would beat you over the head with it.

And they made the whole psychics-as-a-metaphor-for-gay-people thing way, WAY more explicit, so you get the feel that nearly all of the characters have at least some of the experience of being cast out for something they are.

@@Frommerman I absolutely missed that though. I thought it was more of a play that Raz is a circus kid and that he runs away to be normal to an extent. The polar opposite of Kids running away to go join the circus to be special. His mom even makes a point about it. @@incorrectstuffthingy5647 you sound like the narcissistic person, sorry. Being happy to see good representation isn't narcissistic. It wasn't 60 years ago that gay people had to fight just to prevent the police from breaking up safe havens for gay people and murdering them under the guise of protecting and serving. It wasn't but 7 years ago that gay people got the right to marry country-wide in America. Maybe you don't have to ever think about seeing someone like you portrayed well in media, but not everyone is so fortunate to live in that kind of world, but the narcissistic person is one who callously says the shit you say just because people are happy to see characters they can personally relate to based on shared life experiences.
