Crazy Taxi’s imitators never really understood that it wasn’t just the mechanics, it was also the vibes. The way passengers talked to you, the soundtrack, the design of the cars, the drivers’ personalities, etc. all added up to a really singular experience. A lot of the imitators assumed that what was fun about Crazy Taxi was driving people around, but it wasn’t - it was the whole experience. Flash forward to about 20 years later, I volunteered at a one-day gaming convention where Crazy Taxi was one of the few and hotly competitive tournaments for the high score, on the Dreamcast.
