I miss the era when games devs used to take risks, instead of formulaic design, remasters and remakes. I'm so happy Psychonauts 2 has kept the soul of the first. Definitely going to playing the day it releases.

Ah yes - When they take risks and... abandon their games unfinished but on sale. Let's not forget that Double Fine completely left their customers high and dry with Spacebase DF-9. When they had more money than things to spend it on.

Everytime they take risks, people aren't really open to them, for big games anyway. Look at Death Stranding as an example. Indies are the place to experiment.
@tmage23
@tmage23 3 жыл бұрын
You'll only really find that in indie games. The average AAA game development cost (both in time and money) is much too high to justify without knowing that you have a baked in audience. By the time a AAA developer tries something "new" it's usually after something has gotten popular enough among indie developers that it bubbles up through to the mainstream of gaming (kind of like every other form commercialized entertainment)

This game definitely has a lot of style, and that's something that the current gaming industry has forgotten about as of late. You don't need ray tracing, 4k textures, and top notch graphics to make something that look beautiful, and more importantly, unique.

Love the game, instant classic but there could be some work with lip sync and fix up texture pop in. Textures look a bit flat sometimes but most likely because of pop in issues. Overall 9/10 GOTY contender

Me too, it also allows a game to more gracefully age visually. Take the OG Psychonauts game, it was released in 2005 and due to its art style still holds up visually very well, the only thing it could really needs to look nice today is a bump in resolution. Legend of Zelda Windwaker (which came out around the same time as Psychonauts) is also one of my favorite examples of an art style pretty much immortalizing a game.

I donated $100 to Fig for this game. Yet, I'm so happy that MS bought DoubleFine. THIS is the kind of game that Tim Schafer has always made when he is allowed to stay home and make a game instead of having to be out bringing in money. He's a major talent in an industry full of brilliant and talented people. I've always thought of Tim Schafer being the "light mirror" image of Ken Levine. Just powerhouse writers and creators who know how to make genre-defining games, given the time and budget. I'm very excited.

Psychonauts 2 has the appeal of a larger scale AA game. Room to experiment without the risk of recouping a bloated development budget. The larger the budget, the safer your game usually is. It utilizes it's style well too. Not everything needs to be photorealistic since it can stifle artistic expression which this game has tons of!

Psychonauts does what Rift Apart didn't: be ambitious. I played through the entire Ratchet series prior to Rift Apart. After 2, it's the same game over and over and over. Rift Apart is the same, but doesn't reach the heights of 2 either. It's just all so safe. I haven't played Psychonauts yet, but friends keep recommending it. This video got me over the fence to buy the second one (I do own the first).

I'm so f'ing happy to hear this is one of your favorites of the past 5 years. I put on the original from Xbox gamepass last night, & was surprised of how great it looks today. The quirky animation style actually keeps it from looking overly aged, but it was the immersion & the set pieces that really hit home. It's a work of art, & I can't wait to jump into the new game tomorrow. I'm only sad to hear that it's a little short, but that's expected from a platformer.

Literally got my hands on Psychonauts 2 this morning. Having never played the original, I must say this game oozes with charm. I love the core cast of characters and how well they gel together. The dialogue is witty and very original, definitely gave me a few laughs. The platforming is something else, this is Nintendo levels of smooth and intuitive, gives me Super Mario Odyssey vibes with just how well it handles and how varied it is. Only 4 hours in but I'm already in love with this IP.

It is all as you said man. One of the few games that kept me engaged and curious about the story and characters. Pacing has some dips here and there, but this is as close as it gets in participating in Animation Movie from Pixar, Dreamworks and the like. If you combine the powers, the combat can be fun, so if you're really good at multi-tasking and combo's, it can be enjoyable because of your powers. It is not God of War and Spider-man for sure, but still it is more fun to explore. Usually I would watch your reviews before I play a game, ... This one had me hooked from the beginning, and I never felt the necessit, need or itch to watch a review nor trailer. I was always missing a good script in games. It may not be for you if you are not into platforming or have grown out of it, but what is here is a solid art work, and if you like these feel-good animations but with more intelligent tongue'n'cheek humor and clever writing and some mature/shonen/coming of age themes, then you definitely should give Psychonauts 2 a big try. (Thanks for the likes)

Great review as always. As you stated towards the beginning, this art style will rub people the wrong way and I'm one of those people, but it's good to know for those that enjoy this style they're in for a good time.

I think the industry needs more success stories like this to say, 'What microtransactions? we just made a great game, we didn't need to exploit or trick our players. We can still make art.'

Only played the first Psychonauts recently for the first time and absolutely loved it. Cannot wait for this tomorrow. And also more reasons I love Game Pass. Great review man, as always. Keep up the stellar work.

Right in the first seconds! Straight up telling us you love the game. pretty sure this game would look AWESOME when the mods come in. Some shading changes, make it look like pastel or clay or cartoon, add in that HDR and lighting effects. Modders can make it look like a different game.

Four seconds in and I have heard all I wanted to hear and seen as much as I wanted to see - thank you *so* much for giving me exactly what I needed right at the very start so I don't have to sit through ten minutes of "I don't want to see this, I want to experience it!" before I could learn whether or not to pull the trigger on this. Psychonauts is my favorite game of all time so far (and I've been gaming since 1988), and I was so dreadfully worried the sequel might not live up to its legacy.

This game hands down was truly a amazing game. Love to story, characters/voice actors, levels, locations and so much more. The only thing they should add is a map and a manual save system as I have missed one missable achievement and can’t be bothered to do the story again just to get it.

Fyi, missable achievements like figments usually move somewhere else after you return. If you're talking about the cooking level, visit again after you beat the last boss.

Excited to get my copy and play it soon myself. Based on this review and the little bit of video that I've seen(trying to get into it with no spoiler or massive preconceptions) this looks like this will deliver on the promise of it. Now if only Lorne Lanning could get the Oddworld series back on track....
