Psychonauts showcased the consequence of messing around inside of someone's mind and thoughts such as in Psychonauts through the mind of the insane asylum nightguard and the interconnected milkman conspiracy level. Once again a similar learning lesson for Raz makes a return in Psychonauts 2. through the mind of Raz's teacher and a game mechanic literally connecting adjacent thoughts in her head and making new pathway connections to other thoughts to progress further in game. I think the first major mindscape level with Raz's homeroom teacher and gambling addiction was a major shock to myself, like the goal of the class was to help out on the hotel mission and now we the player are fighting a giant octopus lady representing gambling addiction...crazy stuff.

He also doesn't show much mental trauma from the Deluge of Grolovia. They released lots of update videos over the last year, revealing some stuff about the late-stages of development of the game, especially when the pandemic hit and most of the development was at home. This industry has too much secrecy, it's refreshing to see someone open up and have said opening-up not be about some controversy. Also, I got this game with the intent of seeing how well my computer can run a modern release. Despite having a few crashes before I underclocked my computer's memory, I've had fun, and I fully intend on completing this game really soon. Working on my own game distracted me though, now that I've no fears about my computer crashing while saving again due to how well my computer could handle this game (post-underclocking that is).

Interesting that you mentioned the characters in the new game being "secluded" from each other. You're not wrong, but I was thinking just the opposite. 🤔 In this game, most of the characters whose minds you go into know each other, and you get to explore not only their minds but their relationships with other characters. Psychonauts 1 has a lot of great levels, but many of those characters felt like they had nothing to do with each other. I never got the sense that any of the asylum patients interacted or even acknowledged each other's existence until the very end, even though they make up almost half of the game's mental worlds. And aside from Boyd, they're insulated from the events of the rest of the game. Psychonauts 2 is much tighter, thematically.

I still think the minds from the first game were better. Each one felt like they were built around a unique concept and had a distinct identity, whereas the minds in 2 felt like they were built from modular pieces. Here's a 2D section, the ball section, etc. I mean, it's probably due to Doublefine building a proper framework before starting on level design. It just feels like they lost something between being a ragtag group of ex-Lucasart devs and becoming a legitimate well known indie developer. I will agree that how Raz deals with the trauma in each mind is much better this time around. The one that stood out to me was Compton's Cookoff. Raz would give Compton the chance to speak up for himself, and would only cut in when the situation started to go south. He would also suggest taking a break to relax. In this sense, Psychonauts 2 portrays the agency as counselors and therapists, rather than psychic secret agents. I do hope that they do another game that's more in line with the casino heist, or the kinds of missions that we see Sasha and Milla in during their memory vaults. I felt the pin system was unnecessary. I liked how you could customize Raz, but only allowing 3 pins makes it feel restrictive, especially when deciding between practical boosts and cool cosmetic options. Making some of them passive upgrades, such as VIP discount, or optional toggles would have been a better way to go about it, in my opinion. At the very least, a way to upgrade the number of pin slots would have helped. I did something similar as Jirard, and equipped pins that would boost my psitanium income. The main difference is that I would manually equip VIP discount every time I visited the Ottomatic.

@iantaakalla81803 жыл бұрын
It is also noted that the minds remembered the most are from Linda onwards, basically when Psychonauts’ mental levels become a lot more gimmicky and like random levels. Good random levels with good mental illness metaphors (except Linda) informing good design, but it is noted that the 4th-2nd last mental levels (Gloria, Edgar, and Fred) are just very well-done and distinct fetch quests in that while you are fixing their minds, you are doing it to gain access to the upper floors to the asylum. No more, no less. That is, the strength of Psychonauts was its levels, not the overarching stories, the characters, or the strange revelations about stuff (especially considering Coach Oleander is not kicked out of the Psychonauts for what he attempted). Psychonauts 2 has great levels with similar art styles, but in return it now has neat revelations, stories, and characters that you are forced to learn their shared history, giving depth.

Gonna be honest, I'm kinda surprised they didn't bring back fan favorite Boyd Cooper. I could even see a valid arguement for him being there without being forced: Maybe the Psychonauts want to help him cause they feel personally responsible since Oleander implanted the Milkman personality into his mind and Raz woke it up. And Raz's jaunt through Hollis' Hot Streak would make him realize the terrible thing he did to Boyd would motivate him to try to fix his mistake. So obviously this means the return to Boyd's mind would come right after Hollis' Hot Streak

I also completed Psychonauts 2, managed to get all of the achievements, but... a glitch happened, and said I had missed a key in Green Needle Gulch. But... I collected both there... and even opened both chests... luckily, the glitch only affected an in-game statistic, so I wasn't bothered too much.

Keys aren't exclusive to the areas they're found in. Ex: you can use a key you found in the motherlobe on a chest in the questionable area. Are you sure you got both keys in that area though?

I hope it wins best platformer, Tim Schafer and his team deserve it. It's a miracle that this game exists to begin with, it's a sequel to one that came out over a decade ago. Somehow, it's excellent (Not saying that they were lucky, more like it's near impossible for a game that went through what this one went through to turn out great).

To Jirard "The Completionist" Khalil and to his staff: I want to take this time to tell you all that you are doing amazing jobs on these videos. With people being people and KZbin being KZbin, I have a feeling you get downcast and frustrated sometimes when things don't go well and the comments get more and more negative and inappropriate, but I want to tell you that you're doing a wonderful job and I want to give you all the props! Often people aren't told they're doing a great job because "that's what is expected from them" but I want to tell you that I laugh, cry and am greatly entertained by your videos. I always anticipate a video drop, but understand when delays happen. Sincerely, I hope you're all doing well and know that people like me really appreciate the work and effort that not only goes into the videos but in the day-to-day work that you do. I hope this message finds you well and may fortune smile upon you. MTFBWYA, Live-long-and-prosper, and See you later, Cowboy!

I wanted to share a story about this game, a good family friend of mine is a tattoo artist and a massive Double Fine fan to the point where he actually tattooed their logo on his ankle. He posted about it online and one of the double fine people saw it and invited him to visit their studio in San Francisco. He brought me along and it was honestly one of the greatest times of my life. Everyone on the team was super cool and really proud of the work they were doing on the game. I got to see some of the work in progress art and features and all of it had so much care put into it. We got introduced to everyone on the team and they even gave us some merch that was apparently left over from their online store completely free I even got an signed Broken Age artbook from Tim Schafer. I couldn't be happier for the team that the game is a success.

Regret also has another weakness, TELEKINESIS, you can takeaway the weight (that says regret) and throw it at the creature or other enemy's, then there's deep regret (the blue one), if you throw the deep regret it'll explode and hurt everything in the radius.

The original Psychonauts was the ONLY collectathon that I've played with over 200 collectibles where I never minded collecting everything and this looks like it improves on it. Simple things like telling you what type of collectibles you are missing are huge. Collectathons live and die based off of aesthetic and personality and this series brings that in spades. It is right at the top of my list as soon as a spot opens up.

I liken Psychonauts 2 to Kingdom Hearts 3 at times. Both games were games fans waited at least a decade for, and the response is night and day. While KH3 was kinda meh with it's story and decisions, it's gameplay was still top tier, but a lot of people would say it wasn't worth the wait. I think I can honestly 100% say with certainty, Psychonauts 2 was ABSOLUTELY worth the wait. The attention to detail, the little bits of quips and dialogue, the combat being a great example of risk vs reward, it's all amazing. Especially the story and all the major plot twists it gives. I knew that when Psychonauts 2 released, you'd do a completion review pretty quickly. And after my own experiences with this game, and your own reaction to the first Psychonauts, I knew you'd love it. Thanks for a great episode, Beardman.

Near perfect game imo. Literally my only 2 complaints are that the equippable pin amount should be upped slightly maybe to 5 or 6 instead of just 3, and also the final upgrade available at intern level 102 (which is only possible to achieve after 100% completion) which removes the cooldown for all psi powers is useless as you can only get some of the collectibles after completing the game. Maybe there should be some sort of new game plus type mode so you can actually use all of the cool upgrades and stuff in a fresh save file. It's not a complaint, but I also think it would be a cool thing to have a way to fully re-play missions instead of just revisiting brains in the brain tumbler for finding collectibles.

Just finished the game a few days ago and Psychonauts 2 is a stellar sequel. With really satisfying and well written story beats and characterisation that builds on the original game in meaningful ways was no easy task. It truly feels like no time has passed and Double Fine were focused and ready to deliver on their promises to finally continue Raz's story and growth as a character, but equally seeing much more of those he has aspired to be like and how they all have to overcome their own troubles with Raz's help. I agree that the story being more personal and focused with Raz's progression and the powers you utilise for both exploration and combat are the greatest strengths of this game and the fact it needed to not just explain but expand on the original and is executed so well is a testament to the talent at the studio. I think the themes of the game and tackling mental health with relatable subject matter presented in an artistic way, made me very inspired and I think anyone can connect to what someone in this game is going through on some level. No game is willing to take such a risky idea for an interactive platformer and commit to it with so much care and passion. I couldn't help but feel touched that this game could help people start to understand more about what they or someone they know is going through. As an intern, Raz learning valuable lessons on how to use his powers responsibly and in a mature way is a nice touch that I feel we can all learn from rather than just being a funny and heartwarming game. It was a little strange that they teased Otto being the only one of the Psychic Six to not have his mind explored and I kind of suspected in his position that there was some foul play but that didn't end up happening. I did find some aspects of the plot around Raz's home country were not quite as interesting as the more interpersonal relationships of Raz, his friends and family and the Psychonauts agents, but I think they really did a fantastic job tying everything together. I do think overall that the more linear levels maybe weren't always as striking as the original but they were thematically very well done. The pin system did feel a bit restrictive and feel that they could have separated them out between combat, utility such as the magnet power and then aesthetic. Some powers were more useful and utilised more than others in and out of combat, but these were small nitpicks in comparison to what the team achieved despite all the uncertainties around the game's development. This game really deserves to be celebrated and just like with Crash 4 last year, it's great to see developers can still make delightful platformers that surprise and delight in many creative ways. It shows that these game series should not be relics of the past and have so much more potential when given the proper time and development on how to bring them into the modern era without just being fun, nostalgic blasts from the past.
