So Crybaby is a character that Melanie has represented since her first album called Crybaby. The whole first album tells Crybaby's origin story while also speaking on difficult subjects that arent typically talked about in pop music. Melanie has an otherworldly skill to make everything look and seem sweet and cute but if you pay attention to the lyrics, they're often dark and heavy hitting. Her 2nd album is K-12, which explains more of Crybaby's story and how she grows up in school. K-12 is actually a full length movie available on KZbin that Melanie literally created. She's very intentional with everything. This is the debut single off her 3rd album called Portals that just came out yesterday. This is a story about rebirth and the evolving. Melanie explained that she's gotten older and she's ready to put Crybaby to rest and made this album to basically explain what's come of her now. The second song on this album is called Void and basically explains that she hated who she was before and had no choice but to evolve and put things to rest. You REALLY should begin with a Crybaby album reaction WITH the music videos as they are very explanatory. Then react to the K-12 movie, then this new album Portals.

Many in the comments say you need to go back to the beginning but Melanie does such a great job that you got the gist of it without needing to. You clearly understood Melanie lying in the grave was her but so is the new being who is back. People saying you have to watch her previous work aren't giving both you and Melanie the credit you both deserve. Melanie was able to get the point across with a single video and you are clever enough to understand the symbolism. While yes it's richer if you know it from the start of Crybaby. that's clearly not a necessity.

Ok but the reason why at the start of the song the lyrics goes "they're carving my name in the grave again" refers to how she died thousands of times because she can be reborn in a different body yet retains her old self, that's why the 3rd part of the lyrics goes "my body has died but I'm still alive" refers again to how her physical body's dies but herself remains alive If you watch her k-12 movie you'll know what I mean

So I didn't know anything about Melanie Martinez until April of 2023. My wife of 35+ years died at the very end of 2022 and I was in a really bad state. I had a playlist I listened to on Spotify that was someone else's and they added "Death" to the playlist. I heard the song and it just saved my life. I started checking out all her stuff, got Portals, then Crybaby and then K-12. "Death" spoke to me on so many levels and I didn't have to know any of the story at the time. Portals was enough of a story in itself. A complete work of genius. Now, I love the whole Trilogy and the e.p.s that are in between. This song still is my favorite and I just loved your reaction. I respect her so much for her freely expressing what she is in tuned with as herself through her artistry. Most artists like to join in on the typical raido music, soul less, idiocy capitalizing on sensuality, drugs, violence and so on just because it sells, but not Melanie Martinez! I feel that I can connect with the lyrics and her video, her general concept and personal view on DEATH portrayed through the video is just *uggghh* pure artistry ! I think it's healthy to acknowledge the dark and gloomy phases in our lives but it is also more important to use the pain to push through to the other side of that wall, to move on, to progress. I believe the Experiences that we all go through, Both Good and Bad, Dark phases and Happy places, mold and shape you as a person! And of course we all don't come out of those experiences as the same person, I believe we become more aware of ourselves, our limitations, our weaknesses our capacity for hate and love and so on. For Melanie she has shared with us her mental imagery of how she views her journey and for each person, I'm sure its a different image of course❤

So, This music video is the continuation of her two previous albums which tell a story about a character named “Crybaby.” The Crybaby album is about the birth and early childhood of Crybaby. K-12 is about Crybaby in school and her hardships in life. Portals will be about Crybaby dying and being reincarnated as a fairy. Melanie songs are known to be dark, scary, have deep meanings, have multiple meanings per song, and contain topics that are relatable and meant for therapeutic healing, often from trauma, abuse, or just life’s hardships in general. The double meanings allow for both story telling as well as therapy. I highly recommend watching her music videos and movies in order.

Melanie does an amazing job with story telling and writing lyrics with a lot of weight to it along with showing and sounding cute and sweet but having dark undertones, or singing about heavy subjects. Her first album Crybaby started to build the character with the split hair colour dealing with trauma or bad events that happen while growing up. She then made a movie with her music called K-12 dealing with a lot of issues kids face during their school years with a supernatural twist, and now were in her new era Portals that has a very ethereal feel to it focusing a lot on life and death.
