Replacing a fuel pump is not as hard as you might think. I'll show you how to do it yourself, and save a ton of money on labor!
Don't miss pt. 3....

Knocked mine out today, D-Ray. I had to drop the hitch first. That was fun. Got everything buttoned back up, cranked her up, put my foot on the brake and brake fluid squirted everywhere. I guess the vibration from the impact gun broke the corroded line, so here we go. Gas gauge works now, but can't go anywhere lol. Oh well. Thanks for the fine vid, brotha!

This is absolutely PERFECT! you are a natural instructor and I like that you are also clean. I always hate to see people replace things and miss the opportunity to clean around and be proud of a clean good looking job. You even have the perfect voice to play this video on a large audience, ha! You should dedicate yourself to teach. Don't be surprised if GM or other company reaches out to you to be a spokesperson on the HOW TO videos.

I HAVE REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP ON A1988 PU USING THIS METHOD. IF YOU PERFER YOU MAY CHOSE TO LIFT THE FRONT OF THE BED.MUST LEAVE THE BOLTS. ABOUT HALF THE THREADS SO THE BED CAN PIVOT UP. I HAVE DONE IT BOTH WAYS..

I don't even need to replace a fuel pump but this man knows how to get it done. One thing I would like to add, and should have been said, probably best to siphon out all of the gas from that fuel tank first. Gasoline is nothing to play with, highly volatile, and made me wary around that lamp he had near by. Even one static spark and your life will never be the same. You stand a better chance with diesel fuel, but pump gas is DANGEROUS.

D-Ray-, I have been working on everything that's got an engine since I was 13 years old, I am 63 years old, I have a automotive mechanics degree, all the factory schools from Nissan:Toyota;Lexus;UD trucks;Mitusubishi; engine builders seminar; ect, Used to think this procedure was crazy dangerous, But Brother I have got to say, YOU made me a believer!!! You taught a Mangy Old dog in texas something new. Your video is Very WELL Done, you did not miss a thing!!! Clear and Concise, heck I subscribed, it was so well done. Congratulations!! And thanks, enjoyed it. And by the way, I never leave comments.

D-Ray gotta say your video instuction on fuel pump replacement is superb. Today i changed a pump on a 1996 2500 silverado and wish i could have found your video first. the best trick was tilting the bed with the passenger bolts half way in. im 65 yrs young and i muscled the thing around without help. Well you can be sure i will be searching your videos in the future. Thank you for your contribution. Tom from Moscow Idaho.

Excellent. Thank you. Your video debunked what I had been told - tilting the bed is hard and more time consuming. With your video as a guide, I was able to replace the pump on a 2000 Silverado in just under an hour and half. What I really appreciate is the focus on safety - the support blocks, the brass punch tip and working with flammable contents. Thanks again.

Thanks to you, I preemptively replace my pump before it left me stranded. 2013 silverado with 150Ks . One quick thing I'd like to say, I had a tough time spinning the lock ring to secure the new pump. I decided to purchase the $20 tool available everywhere on line, with that tool, mission impossible became a walk in the park. Thank you for posting your video, Helped me immensely. Excellent instructional video. Only a couple things I would like to add and this is for a different year truck. (2000) The replacement pump didn't come with a tank strainer (sock) like the original. Took a lot of time to figure out it is built into the pump. (like the one shown in this video) Delco says it was moved to the internal location to avoid punctures. Nothing about the change in my instructions. Also the replacement pump can with the new style connector and the crimp connections to attach to the old wiring. Red connectors are for the small diameter wire and blue for the larger diameter wire. This information wasn't included in the instructions for my Delco pump. Delco pump with MU in the part number are complete fuel module with pump and sensor. Also noted on my truck the bed retaining bolts were 18mm. Thanks a bunch for the excellent video. Saved me a lot of time.

Thanks D-Ray, did this on my 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3 engine, however I am in the Rust belt, Northern Michigan. Your idea of tilting the bed worked great, and also can check out all the wires, brake lines too. Really glad I saw a post to buy a new locking ring, as mine was toast, nothing but rust. I decided to put in a Delphi fuel pump also. Thanks for all the pointers, Sure helped a lot!

I commented on part 1, I asked the question, "Do you really think this would be easier than just dropping the fuel tank?". Well, after replacing a few fuel pumps on a few cars and after watching this video I can answer my own question. Yes, this is much easier than pumping the fuel out of your tank, disconnecting your fuel filler neck, jacking ur truck up high enough to do the job & putting it on Jack stands, laying on your back & getting dirt in your eyes while taking the bolts out of the straps, getting dirt in your eyes while lowering the tank, pulling it out from under your truck, changing out the old fuel sending unit for a brand new Chineseum fuel sending unit, then sliding the fuel tank back under your truck, lifting the tank back up into position while getting dirt in your eyes, bolting the tank up with the straps while getting dirt in your eyes, bolting the tank straps up while getting dirt in your eyes, & then connecting the fuel filler neck.

D-Ray good vid. I have a 95 Chevy Silverado, I've owned it since new and have put 3 fuel pumps in to. The first 2 I just bough the pump from Auto Zone. On the 3rd one I got the complete assembly, this is the only way to go. Spend the extra bucks and in the end you won't have to go back inside. I had help with my brother, we moved the bed back to the rear of the vehicle. I needed the room. Like you I had a lot of gas in the pig. Been lucky so far, the complete unit has lasted longer than just the pump. Good vid. GM and the other companies have a shitty design with the pump inside of the tank. They could have installed a electric pump next to the frame rail that would make replacement easier.

im about to do this tomorrow... im going to drop my tank to clean it out real good but i can see the advantage of doing it your way( lifting the bed) because you can actually test it.... but mine was just pumping low psi (20psi and still running after changing the fuel filter) but great video, and you really sound like you understand whats going on.. i really like the detail in taking the connections off the actual module itself................

Nice job on the close up shots, good use of the dielectric grease. Only as a suggestion, I might have used a "contact cleaner" first on the electrical plugs, then the dielectric grease. Good that you mention the grounding connector. Amazing how that electrical point of contact is a major problem. Thank you.
