The chorus of "Vedamalady" makes me teary-eyed - fantastic emotional core to this album.
@OphoisOne Жыл бұрын
Same - what gets me is that it changes slightly each time - first chorus is: "When I'm alone, I'm alone at night I want winter to fall on me And I'm alone, I'm alone in flight I am free of equity Where did I go wrong? I've got a sneaking suspicion that I'm under A kindred connivance I'm written in runes" Second progresses to: "When I'm alone, I'm alone at night I will set my father free And I'm alone, I'm alone in flight My mother holds the lock and key Where did I go wrong? I've got a sneaking suspicion it ain't over A kindred connivance I'm written in ruins" And the third, final one is: "When I'm alone, I'm alone at night I wanna set my father free And I'm alone, I'm alone in flight My mother holds the lock and key Where did I go wrong? I've got a sneaking suspicion it ain't over I won't let you, I won't let them Set me to repeat" It's so vague but dripping with emotion, one can just interpret a story out of it.

FYI - you listened to an unplugged version of "Trinkets Pale of Moon" rather than the album version. It is a fairly relaxed track so the first listen experience probably didn't differ much, but you were missing some fun synth and soundscape work that normally accompanies that track.

There is a great recording from Austin City Limits where they bridge the best of both worlds with a great drum beat.

it was so funny when it started.. they are experimental - but thats was too much even for them^^ sure with a story in the back it would been possible.. still to unpolished for such album-style..

As someone who bought this day one... my first few listens didn't blow me away. But it grew on me over the weeks. I fell in love with it. It might be my favorite.

Luckily minds seem to be changing - it's nowhere near as disliked as it was a few years ago I feel. For me it's one of my favorites, it was also my first exposure to The Mars Volta. Hooked me from the start.

@TheAlibabatree Жыл бұрын
@@deanwolfechannel That one too. And I’ll be honest, i dont really care for that one much either. But it has nothing to do with the style, more the quality and creativity. That being said, its still a good album. The Mars Volta has never put out a bad record! Are you planning on listening to their new one?

Bummer they blocked Zed, incredible closer. It did take a couple of listens for things to click with this one, but I think a lot of that had to do with listening to the quality live recordings of these tracks for months before the album was released so I'd fallen in love with different versions of them (particularly Trinkets). Once I saw you dug The Whip Hand right out the gates I knew you'd be good to go. To me now this is just another flavor of Volta to reach for when I get the itch, they're all delicious. Thanks for sitting down with it.

I imagine that after listening to the discography of The Mars Volta, your ranking of the best singers in the history of prog rock has changed substantially.

Thanks for going over this one - I definitely recommend getting the Clouds Hill repressings, they're pretty good and a lot easier to get than the original pressings. Frances the Mute is a wild one, side one ends with a locked groove and side two starts with the same loop that makes up the locked groove on side one.

Hey mate - really enjoyed your reactions! I'm a huge TMV fan, it's very cool to see someone hearing Noctourniquet for the first time. Aegis, Dyslexicon, In Absentia and Vedamalady, Trinkets, Nocto... those are all my fave tracks. On par with their 2009 album Octohedron. Thanks for the vids!

I never though humans could digitally glitch, until I saw a video of Deantoni Parks. Pronounced "Deh-Antony", by the way. Skill aside, this is SO contrary to every instinct of most musicians, the habits instilled by the entire drumming tradition. I imagine it must be like deciding one day to ride bicycles with backwards controls. The only vaguely similar playing style I've heard was Mark Guiliana's work on Bowie's Blackstar album, which is well worth a react, by the way, quite proggy that.
@OphoisOne Жыл бұрын
Legit, first time I heard the album before looking at the credits, I'd thought they used a drum machine on some tracks.

He is amazing to watch. Their live stuff as The Omar Rodriguez Lopez Band is unreal.
@GlennSyndallius3 ай бұрын
haha Deantoni digitally glitching! Love that concept 😂 He's so damn good that I actually went through a period of hunting down the other stuff he's done. I've never done that with any other drummer. Some of his solo stuff is mind-bending.

This album definitely grew on me over the years. In Absentia and Empty Vessels Make the Loudest Sound are both great tracks in my opinion. Really broke my heart when they broke up not long after putting it out. Been a fan of Omar and Cedric since Relationship of Command came out. Thanks for these videos. 👍

Great reaction! Can't say I love this album, mainly because of the muddy production. Seeing them perform this live was very fun though. The only songs I like in their entirety are Imago and Vedamelady. It's frustrating because I want to love the other tracks but they all have bizarre song writing decisions that are extremely off putting to me. Other parts I liked were the bridges in Dyslexicon, In Absentia, Molockwalker, Noctourniquet. I also really dig the creative drum patterns in Zed and Two Naughts.

I'm curious: What songs/decisions are off putting to you?
@mjrtensepian1727 Жыл бұрын
I was there day one, since AtD-I days. Noctourniquet always grated on me. Dyslexicon and Molochwalker are punchy enough that I returned to them. Deantoni's drumming is sick , but preferred on this project: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2e9mKyqeLR1rZo You should def continue with the latest album, released last year. Instrumentation is subdued, but wonderfully melodic. Future Punk meets...murder ballad crooner, maybe?
