Angel Varona use A pickaxe on some Dino’s like stegos, rexes, arges, hyenas, mammoths, and other similar Dino’s. You have to kill them first, and I suggest dragging the body(if it’s a smaller draggable Dino that drops prime) to where you need to use it AE: a tame or a campfire to cook it. It’s the exact same way for mutton, but with exclusively the ovis. The tiers of tools that harvest prime/mutton the best goes from fist(0-1 on bigger Dino’s, don’t even try) to stone pick(decent, but not the greatest) metal pick(the most convenient tool, and all around a decent tool for meat), then the chainsaw which harvests loads of hide, prime , and pelt, but it is very expensive to upkeep and it heavy, and also needs gasoline to use. Also carnivores are nice if you have them.

Something I'm doing lately that I THINK is a good idea is to have a few dinos set to neutral for base defense, but setting them to follow a passive Dino with a high follow distance. This way they'll defend themselves and the base but will always come back when they're no longer agro'd. So far it seems to work well.

I do something similar, I'll usually tame some high lvl dimorphs, then breed them a bunch to get a whole flock, then have a few swarms of roughly the same amount (5-6) of them follow a few set passive dinos while the flock is set to agressive, then leave the passive ones in set areas around my base in places where i know wild agro dinos spawn. Since these dimorphs usually have high damage and health they shred anything they come into contact with while tanking any damage levied at them. I play single player though, so while it works for me, might not work online.

Having tames follow another tame can be really useful if you want to provide a security escort for creatures like doedicurus, beavers, & moschops who gather stuff while wandering. I often send my gatherers out with either a couple of raptors, a couple of wolves, or a kentro following them. The security escort are set to neutral, and I usually set the doedicurus to neutral as well as it’s high enough level. I’ve only lost a couple of security escorts and rarely any gatherers. I’m on a PVE server though so the only dangers are wild dinos. But it’s been a great way to keep a steady stream of resources coming in.

If a tame that is following you is set to neutral and is attacked, they will attack in response and won’t return to following you until there are no more creatures attacking it. I’ve had this happen a lot in a similar situation to your opening scenario. You’re flying home, you think the other flyer is following you, but something attacked it and it stopped following to fight. I lost so many tames who ignored my frantic whistling to follow me in bravely running away from something that was going to kill them before I figured out it was because they were set to neutral or attack my target.

I've had this problem too because when you log back in your shoulder mount is on the ground next to you, not on your shoulder, so if you forget and walk off you'll leave them behind ='/

At 1.40ish, you talk about jumping off my mount and having it fly off. Good point. Here's an even more frustrating thing... When you jump off your flyer and it starts circling your head like a mad dino! I was setting my baby dinos to follow closely so the automated doors I had on their nursery would not shut on them when I went to take them for a much needed walk. If your following is set to low or lowest, it will not land anytime soon and will keep swooping at you so fast that you can't hit the "e" quickly enough to mount it. Worse than that, when you do hit "e' quickly enough and land her safely, you jump off only to have her do it again because you cannot change her settings while on her back! So you must fly her into a small space (like a flyer taming trap) so you can "e" change her settings. I mean, you can still do it outside, it just takes longer. This is the same for your shoulder riders and Micros are SUPERFAST!!! Oh, yeah ... love your videos. You have the knowledge without the super loud voice or distracting music. :D Thanks bunches! (I'm the one with the hat smootching the old guy, btw).

Hey Pterafier, I think a good video idea could be how to properly tame something, on an official server! Even for more experience players, there may be things we don't know like how to properly force feed narcotics, setting up defenses, why use better food (more precious resources), taming effectiveness, etc.! But that's just me, love the content you do bro!

one solution to incorporating nuetral dinos into your defense stratagy is have them folow a parasaur set to turret/passive, so it won't move, and set the dinos target range to medium or lower. they won't aggro an attacker at long range, travel too far from the para, and return after fighting... early game base defense with a para set to [turret all-passive-ignore group] locked in a 2x1 room in the middle of your base, being followed by a pack of dilo/raptor/wolves set to [aggro-medium range target-high range follow-ignore group] can be better than nothing... put a lystro near them and pet it every time you walk by for the passive xp buff

I learnt so much!! I'd like to return the favour! 🙌 Get two raptor packs and have them on neutral, following a parasaur at either side of your base. The raptors will defend the all your dinos - then return to their posts! Pro tip, set the parasaurs to turret mode which makes them a mobile radar to any aggressive dinos in the aoe 😊 I also like to have the raptors packs in their own taming order groups for when I accidentally whistle everything to follow me 😅

The feels the video. When you whistle all follow me when you set up all your dinos and need to redo it. Dont ever drop off your flier right above the land, it will just land somewhere far far away. Never set your fliers to attack my target, if you drop off and are surrounded by dinos attacking you, you wont get to safety ever. Literally enjoy watching your fliers circle around a target without hitting it while you try to get into the saddle. Oh the fun times I had trying to find my fliers after I got mauled. Literally before you land your flier, clear the landing zone and make sure there is nothing in range. So much I had to learn the hard hard hard way. With lots of death of me and my fliers, lost equipment.

The intro game me straight flashbacks from earlier today morning.. I was on my way flying through ragnarok map, right over the canyon where there are half a billion spinos, and I was near height cap with a wyvern. Well, this is where I logged back in after the game had crashed last night, so I came falling down pretty fast, and I wasn't fast enough to whistle my wyvern to follow me. Not the most pleasant way to start playing ark today, but at least I had glider suit, so I didn't end up a pancake at the bottom of that canyon.. And it turns out 145% mov speed is enough to outrun anything in murder snow, except yuties... All this at 7 am, works a lot better than alarm clock if you ask me.

I wish it was easier to find your tames when they get lost tbh, i.e. they could add icons over their heads that you can see from far away (like Grounded). To stop it from cluttering your screen they could: 1) add a compass at the top of your screen to display it (like 7DTD) 2) add a minimap (like the JourneyMap mod from Minecraft) 3) have the option to turn it on & off (like Subnautica).

Some times I would jump off and the dino runs back to some creature that had attacked them, or one of their buddies, and had not yet been killed..... like a dimorphodon, flying over water, and my wolves just all wanna run back to it, despite us having left render range.... and there’s cnidaria in the water..... almost lost a whole wolfpack that way.

Lol when i started ark i played mobile and on mobile there is a request button so you can bring dinos to you wherever you are on the map (on servers it teleports to the nearest bed) and i used to not know about the whistle button so if i dismounted and my pt was high up i would request him down lol
