I am trying to understand how the variable valve lifting actually works. The cam pushes on a follower which presses a plunger which displaces oil which is used to push open the valves. Do the oil solenoids relieve the oil pressure created by the displacement in order to adjust the valve timing, duration, and lift at programmed intervals? Purpose of the bleed holes? Possibly to let air out that has gotten in... Not going to lose much oil pressure through them but air will pass through much more easily. That's where the air goes when you spend 5 minutes cranking after it has sat or been apart.
@TorkMotorsports6 жыл бұрын
I honestly have no idea. Whats odd, they are not mentioned in any tech manual or listed in any videos I have watched.
@richardprice59785 жыл бұрын
from what i have read/seen the "bleed holes" are designed the same way as hydraulic lifters so basically the " lifters" are now being used as push rods without rocker-arms directly on top of the valves and would work with out the computer / the electronic parts like the solenoids ( just collapse the lifters on purpose using a pwm signal ) just then you would need a more street-able camshaft because i sepect that the " stock " fiat camshaft choice is a little " racey for everyone on a daily driver
@richardprice59785 жыл бұрын
just as a side note for reference go look at some early flatheads engines and some of the valve train is setups are the same ( concept wise ) way especially on in line engines hydraulic flat tapit lifter ( roller lifters would work too if there's room to fit them ) setups and some later ohv I-6s and i think how you can change the " rocker arm" geometry is to use a different size cam actuator ( 1in x 1in~ ) vs lifter pistons ( 3/4 in x 1-1/4in~ ) = 1.6 ish ratio rocker arm kinda like how a hydraulic floor jack / bottle jack works o and one more thing engine oil is omost incomprehensible but under a vacuum it will cavitat = loss of engine power so its better to pressure-rise it at the valves vs pulling the hydraulic actuator plungers with more force in my opinion

my 2015 Fiat Abarth started fine, move the car back 10 to cleanout garage, an hour later the car just cranked and it sounded like it had no compression.

Common, the MA brick filled with air and now you have to get it bleed and started. When you get the springs installed, you have to get the car started, and let it run for several minutes.

Thanks for explaining how the oil circulation works on the brick. I was wondering about that? The bleed holes (in my humble opinion) are what allows the Multiair oil to fall back down & rejoin the other oil ? Oil has to circulate through the brick somehow, though it seems at a much, much slower rate compared to the rest of the engine.
@TorkMotorsports3 жыл бұрын
I would thinks it's more about making sure that the MA unit has a fresh supply of oil.
@kolbpilot3 жыл бұрын
@@TorkMotorsports : Agreed, but the "brick" obtains its oil from from the supply in the sump. Surely it was designed to go at least 2 quarts low engine wise before the oil supply in the "brick" is affected ? The "brick" to me, likes a steady supply of thin, clean oil. It's no big deal at all, but it takes a mechanic's mind to keep up with the oil & the car in general.

The bleed holes are to allow air out. Without them the chambers on the MA bricks couldn't get filled with oil.
