Public Official Refuses to Call Black Woman ‘Doctor’

A Greensboro, North Carolina zoning commissioner who refused to use a woman’s correct title while addressing her during a Zoom meeting has been removed from the Zoning Commission by the City Council. In a video of the meeting with city officials, Tony Collins kept referring to Dr. Carrie Rosario as “Mrs. Rosario,” despite the fact that Rosario corrected him several times. Rosario, an associate professor at University of North Carolina at Greensboro, spoke about the exchange with Inside Edition. #InsideEdition

The reason for this, as I'm sure you know, is that zoom is a multifaceted platform that people use for a multitude of purposes. In fact, I don't know any that add their title to their zoom account (do you add Mr., Ms or Mrs?), which is why she clarified i.e. identified her title earlier in the session. As a Dr. myself, I would never insist that my friends and family members refer to me as 'Dr', and the same with many other day-to-day situations. Only in professional and formal settings, such as this one, would I refer to myself by my title.

In a professional interaction - it is correct to address the participants by their titles etc no matter what your opinion is as to the actual merit or worth of their qualification, but on a personal level outside of business - no need to use titles and most PhD's would be surprised if you did.

I also taught at University extension as a master's holder. Again the term doctor was never used within the halls of University extension. It would be very strange to call engineering PhDs by the term doctor. We never did so. Even after joining software industry, we never called such people doctors. The term Doctor is usually reserved for physicians. Anyway, her title is professor, not doctor. She teaches at a University, so she would be called professor.

This lady demanded to be called doctor. That's really weird and egotistical. I personally know many ACTUAL doctors and they have NEVER demanded to be called that. This lady has a doctorate in social studies! It's probably the least important doctorate there is!
