Public Service Broadcasting are releasing live favourite 'The Other Side' this September. Filmed live at Secret Garden Party Festival in July 2015.
J. Willgoose, Esq., the mastermind behind PSB, describes the track as the "most emotional moment" on the album as it delivers emotive charges of drama, heroism and wonder.
Stereogum who premiered the song wrote: "Featuring clips of the Apollo 8 launch, 'The Other Side' plays like an epic sci-fi score that you can dance to at times. Short PA communications from ground control in Houston are enveloped by a synth bass sequence and a simple drum pattern which fades as the Apollo 8 comes into some peril toward the middle of the track. As ground control loses communication and the urgency in the agent's voice grows, the instrumentation returns to build to a climax with atmospheric synths, crashing cymbals, and more complex drum hits."

This track presses my buttons in a very special way: working as a radio operator, I lost contact with an aircraft over Antarctica for several hours. The palpable relief I felt when I was finally able to confirm they were safe is directly echoed in this track, as is the heart-in-mouth waiting.

@@drummermachine12345 I was working at Rothera research station in Antarctica in 2006. Part of my duties as a radio operator was to speak to aircraft every half hour, take their position and that all was well. One flight departed Rothera for the tourist camp at Patriot Hills - they were going to be the first flight into the campsite at the start of the summer season. They gave me a call to say that they were approaching to land, but there was no subsequent call to say that they'd landed safely. Since landing a small ski plane in Antarctica can be quite hazardous - sometimes you can land in a crevasse field - this final "landed safely" call was imporant. I called them a few times and got no response, and then started to become concerned. Eventually I was able to call the operations manager for their company (who was in South America) and he confirmed that they had heard from them and that all was well. Not that dramatic a story, but the heart-in-mouth feeling of "are these people safe" remains with me, and this track very much reminded me of it.

The Public Affairs Officer (PAO) speaking on this track is John McLeaish, he was on shift for Apollo 8 Lunar orbit insertion. On the PSB track, 'Go' you hear the PAO Doug 'play it cool' Ward and the CAPCOM, the famous Gene Kranz , who wrote an amazing book 'Failure is not an option' , get the audio version of it, well worth a listen. Doug Ward has seen the PSB videos on here and enjoyed them very much. He's in touch with a friend of mine on a NASA forum.

It's a revelation to hear music that is not so much nostalgic (an uncritical view of the past), but that recovers and enlivens an optimistic outlook towards modernity. Such a tonic after years of tiresome cynicism. Fab.

Definite elements of Depeche Mode to be heard in their sound, even Kraftwerk. This band are so good. For people my age this brings back floods of nostalgia. A longing for innocent days gone by when it seemed mankind could do anything. We even believed we could put an end to war. We were naive but innocent at the same time. This song is ambient and nostalgic, it’s a work of magic.

Clock here in Mission Control They're travelling over the back side of the Moon now Our velocity reading here 7777 feet per second Now we are in our period of the longest wait Continuing to monitor, this is Apollo Control, Houston Apollo Control, Houston, we've acquired signal but no voice contact yet, we're standing by We're looking at engine data and it looks good; tank pressure's looking good Apollo 8, Apollo 8, this is Houston, Houston over? Roger, Houston We read you loud and clear How do you read us? Right, we've got it, we've got it Apollo 8 now in lunar orbit; there's a cheer in this room This is Apollo Control, Houston, switching now to the voice of Jim Lovell By 60.5. A couple of points on "Stereogums" "premiere" of the piece "....which fades as the Apollo 8 comes into some peril toward the middle of the track. As ground control loses communication and the urgency in the agent's voice grows", 1. Apollo 8 engaged in a planned circumnavigation of the moon. It did not come into some peril but this was a planned loss of signal as it went to "the other side". 2. There was no urgency in the CAPCOM´s voice as these people were instructed to maintain a consistent tone to avoid panic, even if there was a serious situation, as there was on Apollo 13. What was striking about the CAPCOMs people in Houston at the time was the monotone nature of their delivery, except when there was something to celebrate, as there was here latterly when Apollo 8 went into lunar orbit.
