Tom Waits wrote this song. I'm usually a little hesitant to cover songs by Tom Waits. His music feels so complete when he performs it. What can I bring to it? But his songs are so irresistible. My friends Kerry Marsh, Billy Pitman, Andrew Quinn and Doo Dah joined me on this one. What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

Tom Waits is so overrated. You could replace the lyrics with anything, combine each line with "and" and it would sound profound, that's how utterly pointless the song is. Just sayin'. In the Tom Waits song two things connect each image described: something coming to an end, and people wanting something they don't have and being unsatisfied with their lives. Hence, Napoleon, figuratively a world conqueror, out late at night in the rain dreaming of a girl he doesn't have. Make up your mind about the rest and how it relates to it being 'time' for something, but I don't think its the same as random gibberish.

Tom Waits is just the best poet of all time, but this is a beautiful tribute to 90s Bone Machine era Waits, incorporating a lot of Americana and quieter musicianship and vocals that sounds like if sang just a little louder they would fragment into a hundred little stories. Gorgeous cover, man!

I don't even know this song, but I think Puddles nailed it once again! @@recoil53 At least he has one thing that clown-clowns don't, he's got a calm demeanor, so... good for clown-o-phobe exposure therapy. xD I like how he specifically looks not like a birthday-party clown, but a pierrot/sad clown, which definitely fits well with him being an emotional performer. I think that one of the things about clowns that is offputting to some people is that they're kinda supposed to be really weird and make people laugh... I wasn't scared of clowns, but I didn't always do great with people in mascot costumes, because it was easy for me to be confused when trying to communicate because often the basic gestures were not enough for me to go by. Puddles goal isn't to strictly make people laugh, and he has a face with a lot of sincerity, so while the initial meeting would probably be jolting, and his size might be intimidating, I wonder if perhaps he wouldn't be too scary just because he's very personable.
