PUEBLO: Colorado's Trashy Ghetto? I Was Surprised At What I Saw

Lived my entire life in Denver, CO and moved to Pueblo in 2017...Pueblo gets such a bad rep it doesn't deserve! I felt WAY less safe living in the Denver metro area. The home I live in Pueblo is much nicer than I had in Denver, and the air is actually fresh and blue here. The people are friendly and down to earth. Pueblo has a lot to offer and I am so glad I moved down here. I sometimes wonder if the bad reputation is good to an extent, because it keeps people from invading and taking over like they did in Denver and Colorado Springs! My husband and I love old homes and history, and Pueblo cares a lot about its history and traditions so it is full of beautiful old architecture and neat places. I like that people born and raised here have a strong sense of pride and home/roots.

It don't grow n allow jobs to b brought to our town. Some say dats why crime is so high but I beg to differ. Jobs only change poverty if u want jobs n to not live in such a way. So many so comfortable n brain wazhed to live a specific type of life style. There is good in diz town n good people n they do deserve better jobs wit better pay .

Please keep in mind that neighborhoods with bad or rough reputations will be very quiet during the daytime hours. Go into them after dark and that will be a different story altogether.

Ok, cool, fair enough. That said, I never felt like I was in danger in Pueblo, unlike other cities I have toured - Detroit, Baltimore, St Louis, New Orleans, Jackson...Pueblo is nowhere near as dangerous as those cities. I liked Pueblo a lot.

I have lived in East bay area in Cali, northern N.M. and Colorado. One of the places I lived in CO, was Pueblo. Trust me when I say, there is crime everywhere. I lived in pueblo for 7yrs. Moving a year and a half ago was a huge mistake. I really miss it there.

I've had a knife pulled on me twice, my uncle was stabbed for helping a woman push her car off the road, watched the cops shoot and kill a dude right in front of my house last year cuz he shot at them. just a few weeks ago my friend saved a girl from getting raped and I can keep going

That maybe somewhat true. But I can't 100% agree. It depends where you are. I've seen a gang related shooting in broad daylight while children were playin on my street. Seen gangs playing loud ass music and yelling and getting physical at eachother during daylight too. Pueblo ain't terrible, but I personally think Pueblo doesn't have opportunity to grow and get better either

I agree about the bad apples. I think a lot of the crime in pueblo is gang vs. gang. If you are not in a rival gang and do not leave valuable things laying around or otherwise a tempting target for theft you likely won't have any trouble in pueblo

Just like Colorado, Colorado "colored" in Spanish is pronounced like tom-ah-to in the original Spanish pronunciation, but most people who live there pronounce Colorado like the a in apple.

This sounds like the kind of cope I would hear all the time when I lived in Pueblo. Those "bad apples" are about 1/3 of the population. There's a lot that I love about Pueblo, but it has some serious problems. Those problems won't be fixed until the people of Pueblo start being brutally honest with themselves about how bad their city really is.

At risk of doxing myself, I actually grew up in the house at 20:43 my dad, my brother and I actually built the red fence you see in the backyard. I’ve seen it sell as a one bedroom one bath but growing up we had three beds and second bathroom in the basement. I say “bathroom” it was literally just a room with a toilet on sink or bath but the toilet worked fine. Moved out of town long ago but super weird to see my child hood home in a video like this. Remember that when you're in Colorado water is gold. Having a zeroscape landscaping is the best way to approach the water usage. Unlike northeastern cities or northwestern cities most of our water goes to other states and is lightly utilized in Colorado front range. At least by the people who attempt the zero landscape and save water. So don't look at a gravel yard and think that it's not good because it is. Yes you can put cactus or other type zeroscape vegetation but sometimes it's hardly worth it.

I have lived in Pueblo all my life. The “ugly” building at 4th Street and Court Street is the old Mountain Bell Telephone Company Building. Our jail is at 909 Court Street. You missed a lot of Pueblo like The Old Historic Neighborhood. You should have went through Rosemount Museum at 14th and Greenwood. John Thatcher was a founding father of Pueblo and it was his mansion. We have a lot to offer. Come back and see the whole town not just a very small portion before making judgment good or bad. I will say that there is a lot of crime here. It’s not like it was in my youth. Definitely gone in a downward spiral.

Other than saying the phone company building is ugly it was a fairly glowing report. What do you think has driven crime? In the city where I was a cop there are just too many people piled on top of one another and way too few cops. We go from call to call with only maybe 20 mins a shift doing policing aka driving around aimlessly.

@@DWBurns the majority of crime is gang and drug related. It is a safe city if you are not involved in those circles. The amount of theft over the last few years is very annoying and has greatly increased, all neighborhoods, also driven primarily by drug abuse.

I've lived in downtown Pueblo for the past year, and walk past that "ugly" building on 4th and Court Streets, and I've been wondering and asking locals about that weird, hollow, see-thru building, and nobody knows anything about it.... My husband and I grew up in the Chicago suburbs and moved to Pueblo in 2008 and I have nothing but good things to say about this town. The people here are some of the nicest people in the country, as we travel a lot. We take advantage of all the amenities, including all the trails, paved and hiking. The big area you missed was Union Street where all our shops and restaurants are located; it crosses over the river walk, you walked under it. It is a beautiful, historic town with great people and great culture! My gym is located in Bessemer and I run the streets of Bessemer in the dark in the early morning all the time. I love Pueblo and do not plan to ever move from this town.

Most of the neighborhoods in and around Bessemer were built specifically for the masses of immigrants that came to the city to work at the mill. Each neighnorhood had its own ethnicity, which included their own churches, schools, markets, etc..The "Bessemer Process" was the term used to make the steel at the mill and named after Henry Bessemer. The area around the Riverwalk was revitalized sometime in the 80s. Points along Union Ave were a bit trashy back then. Now, the entire area is a historic district. In 1921, the entire downtown area was 8ft under water. Pueblo isnt any better or worse than anywhere else. Its the people that live here that make it what it is. C'mon back anytime! I finally left my last neighborhood after 64 shots were fired during a house party on my street. I'm still in Aurora, just a nicer part. Pueblo is fine. Crime, homelessness, etc. are all a direct correlation of population.

Pueblo is at the southern border of the Front Range Megalopolis. Colorado, from Pew town south to the Continental Divide west has a unique history between 1890 and 1945. The Pueblo Flood of 1921, the Steel Mill and Rockefellers, Union life, and immigrants from Europe, Mexico, and Back East, that blended together thru living the Union life. A tough town-is now-and during much of its' past. A lot of people in the Springs, and points north, have grandparents living there.

Pueblo has been a hidden gem. I lived in Denver and have worked all over the country. Lots of great food, an awesome lake which is the most visited state park in Colorado. You can be in the mountains in 25-30 minutes and they aren’t overrun in southern Colorado like they are in the north. Everyone I know that has moved here from Denver is glad they did. If you’re young there isn’t a big nightlife but it seems to be improving and there are a lot of great festivals in the summer. Pueblo is now on the radar due to the high prices in northern Colorado. I live downtown, investors are coming from everywhere. An investor told me their company sees Pueblo as the best growth opportunity in Colorado over the next 10 yrs. They recently bought a city block with plans for apartment and loft construction.

There is a very good community College, a state university and an excellent community health center, along with two large hospitals that offer almost every physician specialty and procedures.

Not a friend, but I don’t see how building more apartments is hurting the situation. I agree that all the people moving to Pueblo has raised prices. Not sure I would consider them trash as much as some of the trash that was born and bread and the trash local govt we have had for decades. For that matter the trash state legislature and governor I unfortunately stupidly voted for that is letting thieves and criminals go without a day in jail.

The “ugly” white building used to be a large bank and also housed the old Mountain Bell offices. It’s changed hands a number of times. The irony of the Irish pub is its owned by an Italian.

I wish you could have visited Pueblo this week for our Chili and Frijoles FEstival. Thanks for coming and checking it out yourself. There's a lot of construction happening to downtown and 8 new housing developments happening as well for growth. The levee below the bridge you drove over to enter downtown has all been renovated. You can walk or bike on it, and enjoy shade structures and art sculptures. If you head west of town there's Lake Pueblo State Park.

I guess it's different when you live somewhere than if you just drive through. There is no way to describe the fireworks that last for months around Pueblo that are so traumatizing, I feel like that alone is bad enough. The trashy alleys are a world of their own, homeless people stealing and squatting. The stealing is just horrible. People blow through stop signs and red lights. Its not just one thing, its many things that you have to actually live through, not something you see from a car window. Lets not mention the food desert too. Oh and how Pueblo pays more for utilities than Colorado Springs, and a traffic camera put in one of the poorest areas is terrible too.

I couldn’t agree more. It’s a terrible place to live. From the massive amounts of homeless to the huge amount of crime to the lack of food choices and just generally rude people it’s not what it looks like just driving through or looking at a fun fact list. Oh and the fireworks my gosh finally someone else who talks about that, ugh it’s awful. I feel like the only good thing about living in Pueblo all my life is almost anywhere I move to will be a serious upgrade.

This city used to be Colorado's 2nd biggest city until the 60s, the city is mostly a shadow of it's former self now, not as great as it once was, you look at older pictures of this city from 80 years ago and it just looked much more nicer and more lively, so it's really a shame to see Pueblo go downhill like this, kind of a trend with a lot of US cities. All though the Riverwalk is nice and there is history and culture here, still has a long way to go if it wants to see better days again. Also I'm from the Springs which is just North of Pueblo, I don't know if you have visited yet but I'd be interested to see you do a video here if you have not.

Actually, at one point, Pueblo outran even Denver or Springs in terms of economy. Being a major rail intersection (UP & ATSF) and having the steel mill was just the right combo in just the right place. It's talked about if you go to the Rosemont museum. These days, it's really a shame. It's not a bad city by any means, but it's just not good. Economically, it's slowly falling apart

I know both sides of it, a short stay won’t show you the true face of this town, if you know what you’re looking for/at you can see how this town always has worked. My native town use to be so good to live in and that’s why it’s so bad now cause individuals don’t know how to take it!!! It’s changed and more drug users and or crime is here only cause it’s smaller and has intake so many different states and counties coming in to live, and it’s up in your face!! For the most part if you mind your business you will be fine!! River walk, liberty point, reservoir plus San Isabel is the best part of us down in the corner of colorado!!! Thanks for coming to Pueblo! I moved here in 2019 and I really love it: the friendliness, diversity and amazing architecture everywhere. Lots of history here, Pueblo used to be quite a place before the Flood! Native American, European, Hispanic and more are all still here! Next time, please see the Union Depot area downtown, the County Building and Mineral Palace Park on the North side, and City Park and the Fairgrounds on the Southside. And Lake Pueblo is just a few minutes west!

Pueblo is Colorado's ninth largest city. The river walk extends further past "Victoria" to the other side with a area for pedal boats and light fishing. The water fall past the bus depot (Transit Center) is unfortunately used as a shower for the homeless in the late night hours (glad you didn't cool off in its waters). The east side of town in now the rougher side of town, in the past it was a great area. Pueblo is a proud town and it has its bad underbelly but, its all on who a person associates with. Positive people bring positive energy. I have lived here continuously since 2013 (off and in before then) and to me I see Pueblo stuck in between proud tradition and wanting to expand and grow to a larger community. Pueblo has some "cleaning-up" to do before it can grow and once again prosper. Thank You for visiting.

America is under a fentanyl epidemic it's unfair to say it's a bad city because of a few homeless. Go to Denver or the springs the homeless population and underbelly is far worse. I recently moved out of Colorado after living there 30 years. I'm extremely happy with where I moved. I was talking to a medical professional here who just moved here also from Indiana. He said he stopped in Colorado for a short while on his way here and checked it out a little. I said well what did you think about it? He got real quiet and he said the people are so rude rude! And I thought you know that is so true I can't tell you how much rudeness I encountered over those 30 years in Colorado they're just everywhere. You missed the Rosemont museum (old mansion, now a museum) north of downtown a few blocks. You also missed the old Union Train Station. The tiny mansion you DID see is the Orman mansion; belonged to a former Colorado Governor. When I was 16 (53 years ago, I proposed the river walk, and was told I was a foolish kid wasting valuable city council time. Lastly, you missed the single largest art project on the planet: the levee which holds the current Arkansas River is painted with thousands of huge murals. Damon Runyan used to do the sports news in the old movie theaters all over the world, was a Pueblo native. Dave Packard of Hewlett Packard was also a Pueblo native. Lowell Thomas used to do the News segment of news in movie theaters. This was before television, so WW2 footage for example could only be seen in theaters. Lowell Thomas was from Victor, Colorado which is about 45 miles northwest of Pueblo. So your parents and grandparents were very familiar with Thomas and Runyan, no matter where you lived in the USA. The former police department in Pueblo a block from the Riverwalk arrested Ted Bundy. The old multi-story building (now a senior retirement home) was the Vail Hotel, where President Woodrow Wilson was taken when he fell ill, never to be seen alive in public again. The trai depot that I mentioned (also only a couple blocks from the river walk) still has the high water marks of the 1921 flood, which is still the worst, most deadly flood in Colorado history.

Surprisingly Pueblo has had a much higher home appreciation rate than Denver 73-43% and slightly higher than Colorado Springs over the last 5 yrs, but that is a newer trend and the job prospects have always been far better in Denver.

As a person living here the only good I can say is the murals are neat and we've got some really good restaurants. Not enough of a reason to stay. It's a good town to literally just fuel up get a bite to eat and continue on your way. Trying to leave as soon as I am able.

It hurts my heart to see Pueblo’s bad reputation but yet I figure it keeps some people away and I’m ok with that too! Pueblo has some really beautiful neighborhoods!! I wish you could have seen the beautiful historical homes by Parkview hospital and Central High School! I live out in the Mesa with all of the farms and I absolutely love it here! A lot of crime is gang crime… these people have really hurt the city’s reputation but if you choose your association wisely you will typically avoid the worst of it. BTW the time I spent there were some of the best memories I have. I went to Carlisle Elementary and I used to ride my bike to the zoo and would fish in the city park. Didn't go home until the street lights came on. I wouldn't do that now even as adult.

We just bought a house in the old historic district 3rd and Orman. We are retired and Castle Rock exploded and got insane. I am a Colorado Native. We have encountered NOTHING but good friendly people in town. Yes, there are rough areas. Yes, there is crime. But there is everywhere. I can get across town in 10-15 in rush hour. I can't do that in Castle Rock anymore and we have traffic jams 7am to 7 pm 7 days a week in downtown Castle Rock.... And no place to park to enjoy the downtown restaurants. Cost of living, history and the people attracted us to Pueblo. Looking forward to learning more about our new home.

No history from me. When I moved here from Ca about 17 yrs ago, Pueblo was a very clean area. I used to tell my friends and family back in Ca. how litter free the streets and roads were. Then marijuana was legalized and a great migration happened. Did these people care about our fair city, NO they did not. Little by little the littering began. My neighborhood is by the university and there are also elementary, middle schools and high schools. The worst litterers are the university students. You see all those residences where the yards are unkempt. Elderly people, who probably have no one to help them with yard work or other maintenance. No enough money either. Sidewalks, streets and weeds all over, that is the city's responsibility. But the mayor and the city council don't want to spend the money. They claim its not in the budget. BS!!!!

You missed the quaint neighborhoods around Pueblo Community College called “the Blocks”. But you are right - having lived in Pueblo for 7 years and then lived 40 minutes outside it, Pueblo has unique homes - no cookie-cutter neighborhoods in the original sections of Pueblo! That’s what I loved about it.I wonder if that “ugly” building with no window is the new courthouse? That was in construction for a few years but I left the country before it was completed, I think. I love Pueblo - it has many beautiful parts and some ghetto parts - like any city. It is no longer the “Steel City” as those mostly shut down in the 80’s, is my understanding.

I'm considering to move to Pueblo because after living in Denver for 16 years I can't afford it here anymore, and Colorado Springs isn't that much cheaper. I've heard the west side of Pueblo is a lot better than the east side. This gave me some glimpse into Pueblo and I appreciate the video, but it hasn't really helped me decide yet.

I recently returned to Pueblo and bought a recently renovated house in the Bessemer area. I returned after forty years away in military service and later working in the tech industry. My parents lived in Canon City to west of Pueblo after they retired and then passed, so I have now retired and returned to Pueblo To a not to large not to small a home with some character. That building used to be and maybe still is the phone company and the tower on top at one time was a micro-wave tower but is probably just a cell tower now. By the way to say "Pueblo correctly try saying "web" instead of "way". But I liked your video and I admit that Pueblo has some work to do but we're making progress, I lived worked in Las Vegas and Phoenix and never felt safe in Phoenix it has a lot of problems ,Vegas there are some safe places but there are a lot you should stay away from.

My mother and I moved to Pueblo West when I was in 8th grade. I absolutely loved it! Then my mother lost everything and left Pueblo when I just started my junior year. She left me in Colorado (alone), and wondered why I wasn't going to school. 😂 This was in 1979. I would give anything to go back!

Literally anywhere other than where you went and you'll see why residents hate living here. Walk down the river walk alone at 2 am see if you think differently.

I'm very careful to stay out in the open, but that being said - yeah, sometimes the homeless can be pretty aggressive, especially when they are wired out on drugs. I'm a big guy, though (6ft 1, 210 pounds), so anyone coming after me will have plenty resistance to contend with.

It's a great little town not without problems but everywhere has problems. These days I hear more on the radio about crime in Colorado Springs than I do in Pueblo.

Sad when you have to take a short cut through an alley to feel a bit more safe. I have a home in the "trashy area" of a vacation town and the city allowed an older blighted home to be torn down by habitat for humanity and instead of placing a similar style home that sort of aligned with the character of the existing neighborhood , they allowed them to place a mobile home there and put a large non covered deck (not a porch) on the front of the house that is littered with absolutely everything that wouldn't fit in the house. Purely on the city for allowing new blight where the old blight at least had historic character. I can't imagine living directly across the street from that mess and looking at it day after day and the city not doing anything about it..

My family moved here from Charlotte Nc in 2015. I love it here! Couldnt PAY ME to live in Springs or Denver or the "nicer" areas. The people in Pueblo are pretty good people, and the most unpleasant people Ive met in the state are Springs and north. But lets keep it a secret, or all the douche canoes will try and get Pueblo all "gentrified" and ruin it. Also, Pueblo is a retiree community as well, services like people helping you get your groceries in your car, even help you shop are pretty common. Car crime is pretty high, and I wouldnt leave valuables out in plain sight overnight, but that goes for most of America. Petty thefts like shoplifting are common as well. But we also treat our disadvantaged with humanity and respect, unlike the bigger nicer cities. Similarly to the San Antonio Riverwalk, the homeless congregate around it, but Im much less afraid walking the Pueblo Riverwalk than San Antonio Riverwalk. The amount of different homestyles is one of my favorite things.

Pueblo is what you make of it. I love it!! The recreation in and around Pueblo is amazing, the reservoir, mountains, unlimited motorcycle riding at PMI, fishing, hunting, football season, state fair, chile festival, on and on. But you need money to have a boat a motorcycle to go hunting etc. The problem here is it has been run by Democrat politicians for 70 years trying to turn this town into a tourist destination which it is not in the least bit a tourist destination lmao, there is no evening social life for young people (very dangerous) Very, very few good paying jobs and almost no union jobs. Pueblo should be an Industrial Mecca, there should be factories as far as the eye can see, a nuclear power plant, everyone in southern Colorado should work in Pueblo and make good money. We have water, I-25, airport, railroad and resources.

I’ve been in Pueblo for about 10 years now and I think it’s pretty good for a smaller city. There is a lot of culture and industry. I enjoy learning the history here and have even worked at “the mill”. I don’t miss the traffic bigger cities. Nice video of the city!

On Main Street by the federal building I’m sorry you didn’t say anything about the Thatcher building which is across the street the seven story red sandstone building. So many other great places in town you could’ve traveled through. Lifelong Pueblo resident here (others have mentioned the pronunciation, so I won't). One reason those fountains at the River Walk weren't on might be to conserve some water in the hot, dry August drought season. Sometimes they only turn them on in the afternoons or evenings, during the busier times. 9:03 My mom used to work in that building, back when it was Columbia Savings & Loan and for a short time after it became a Wells Fargo. I spent many afternoons and evenings there after school, as my mom and my friend's mom were coworkers and would take turns picking us both up from school and bringing us back to the bank until our moms got off of work. We were supposed to stay in the break room/ kitchen downstairs and do our homework, but mostly we used that time to decompress and relax after school, sometimes playing the piano in the little auditorium down there or just horsing around and being silly. If we were lucky, we could get a few bucks from our moms and walk up the street to get ourselves a snack from Taco Bell or Wendy's. It wasn't the best childhood, but it had its bright spots. 24:01 My dad worked in that building for a time when I was a kid. It used to be the Mountain Bell telephone/ telecommunications company.

Nice video. I have lived in the Pueblo area since mid nineties. Pueblo does have quite a large range between the enjoyable parts to the nasty parts of town . Theft is widespread due to drug use. The biggest part of the population are nice. The bad part are unforgettable. Congratulations on finding my favorite place, the Shamrock.

Glad you enjoyed it. you missed a ton of amazing old and historic houses. Pueblo stretches out far and wide. We have dinner areas that have some amazing newer & older mansions that would make your jaw drop. Very diverse and the food is amazing! Next time you come, be sure to get info from someone that knows the city, & you could get about 20xs the footage in a 30min to 1hr video. It would be well worth it! We also have a ton of yearly events in the summer that bring people from all over the nation. Too bad the cringe rate is so high here. I live my city tho. Godbless sir!

Wow, thank you, JP. In short, I grew up dirt poor, the oldest of 5 kids. We grew up in a dilapidated single wide trailer in one of the crummiest trailer parks in rural Oklahoma. I worked my ass off and at age 28, bought a 2700 square foot house, brand new, in tony McKinney, Texas, a wealthy Dallas bedroom community. I sold the house for huge profit and now you see me traveling the country. But I have seen and lived in a lot of the various economic neighborhoods (good and bad) of this country. It's why you see me tour good and bad neighborhoods, both, when I visit a town. :)

It's the dirtiest city I've ever lived in. I used to work in Mexico, Kansas City, Omaha, and Phoenix. By far, Pueblo is the dirtiest. Plus police are worthless unless it's petty. Don't expect them if your getting mugged, rapped, or home invasion because they won't even show up. Yes it's the cheapest town in Colorado to live. It's also the worst to live. It could be a great place. Loads of good people but the bad out weights the good. The city council sucks never allowing fun or exciting events to happen. New businesses can't get started here because of the theft. But besides the terrible city council, The gangs, drug users, the theft, home invasions, hit and run DUIs, murders, non-existent police. It's a good place to pass. Our graffiti is actually the best part. I did forget about some of the houses. There are some unbelievable house's.

I live in Pueblo. If you want to live you better get a doctor in Colorado Springs or Denver. There are no doctors here now. Just Phys Assistants. I always ask why didn't you go on to be a doctor. Same answer. Too much time to get thru or to expensive. And you can better believe there is no comparison to having a PCP or a doctor. Recently had. Phys. Assis. Tell me when I showed her welts that itched I told her I thought it was internal. She said it was mosquito bites. I told her you mean a mosquito has been coming into my room every night and biting me just on my legs for the last three weeks. She said yes. It was hives as I found out later. Caused by my eating peanut butter for the first time in my life. Still looking for that fat mosquito.

Pueblo is lovely! I've never heard that it was a ghetto. I had a friend who used to live there for many years and she never complained of poverty or crime and the word "Ghetto" was never mentioned. I wonder why so many have claimed that??? Oh Well!
