Using still photos shot 35 years ago, this video documents my time in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico; researching a boat building project

These boats are expensive! And rightfully so once you see what it takes to build one. I am sure there are many easier ways to make a living but some people are just driven to do something extrordinary. Watching these videos with their excellent fotography and calming narration is always enjoyable.

Videos like this one and many others here are 95% Tony Fleming's history, 5% Tony Fleming's life. They are already interesting enough but I tend to think the opposite 5/95 ratio would make them much more so. This channel looks like a one-man project and inevitably it has a number of flaws but, at the same time, it doesn't have less value because of that. This fact is inspiring by itself. I discovered you some years ago, it is nice to see you are still around posting or reposting videos and I sincerely wish you keep doing it many more years to come.

I have to share an experience almost identical to yours. About 47 yrs ago when I was 12 or 13, at our summer cottage, I was supposed to be doing chores while my parents were out doing errands. Instead I climbed a tree where we had built a "fort", and somehow fell, landing in my left side. I knew right away I couldn't move, and laid there for perhaps 3 hours until someone returned. My father managed to get me into the back of our station wagon, which was excruciatingly painful, and I must have felt every bump in the road on the 35 mile drive to the closest hospital in Lindsay, Ontario. I too had a pin put into my left femur for the healing process. I can't imagine how you were able to crawl off from where you were and make it to your office. I can still remember the pain more than anything. Now I know I must be destined to one day own a Fleming Yacht. Hopefully the 65. I can't get enough watching videos of it. In my books it's definitely one of the prettiest.

At first I thought this was more recent. 1986 Mexico was so beautiful and looked very safe. Hope Penasco is still beautiful and safe and serene.

I'm kind of old now but my Dad took us fishing and boating when we were young in a twelve foot wooden rental . He brought his own 10HP motor that he found in someone's trash to make the boat rental $4 less. He never spoke about his US Navy experiences much, but he surely loved the seas. Your videos make me think that he would have been a good mate to you, Tony.

Wow...amazing vid Tony, you are a class act in narration .... simply a class act. It seems a shame such a beautiful country with wonderful people struggle so much. I believe having to abandon a project like that after so much effort would have finished most people. In 1972 ....my parents and I - on vacation drove to Puerto Penasco and drove around for the day. I was ten years old, but the memory is very very vivid. I recall incredible poverty. Poverty unlike anything I had ever witnessed , and we were down by that marina and the fishing boats were in horrible dis repair. Nearly every vehicle seemed to have a cloud of light blue smoke that followed it. I truly do not recall seeing much of any building that was nice. Thanks for posting this vid....

Took a cruise out of Puerto Penasco in Jan 2020. First cruise out of their new cruise terminal. Somehow the dock capable of handling cruise ships hadn't been finished, so all passangers, luggage and stores had to be ferried out to the ship. (Astoria, formerly the Stockholm) (Yes it is still sailing after it's run in with the Andrea Doria). Couldn't have treated better there. Sailed the Sea of Cortez for a week and then back.

My stupid mistake did have repercussions. I had the Mexican pin removed in Taiwan after a couple of years because the body cunningly only builds back what is necessary and stops part way if the reinforcing pin is there. The Mexican surgeon told me that even though the actual hip point was not involved in the accident, for some reason - not really understood - the joint could give trouble maybe 20 years later. Sure enough, I had to have a hip replacement in 2008. All has been OK since then.

Great story and narration. I think I will stick with metal hull construction. At least after that amount of time you would have a hull you could float away with. Sorry it did not work out for you.

Tony, I simply cannot believe that I did not hear of this operation in Pto. Penasco in the late '80's. I spent a LOT of time there in the 80's and 90's. The Port area was my favorite area in town and I spent countless hours there talking to sailors, local boat builders, seamen, and fisherman. How I was not informed about a gringo building a massive boat right next door seems unbelievable. I mean it was a small town at that time. I can only assume you had a "Don't tell anyone what we were doing gag-order" in place with your people. Regardless, I sure wish I was able to meet you then as I am highly confident that I could have been able to assist you with your logistical struggles to procure materials and supplies. At the time I knew many people, mayors, policia, federales, naval officers, DEA, etc. not only in the town but in the State of Sonora as well. Importation of materials would not have been a problem. But thats in the rear view mirror now as you have obviously succeeded most wildly. I love your work man. Great videos! Thank you Sir.

My gut tells me that this could have been one of those moments in life that could have changed my course. But alas it was not meant to be. Best of luck to you and your future endeavors. Peñasco is a lot closer to the market than Wan Tan village among the rice paddies in Southern Taiwan. The rest of the story in infinite detail has been on line literally for years. Very disappointed- the Colorado river doesn’t go anywhere near Puerto Penasco. Get your facts straight. The video is misleading. This fishing village has a great community and fresh food. This is a small town, it has good medical services but no large hospital. very dated video.

I did not state in the video that the Colorado Delta was close to Peñasco. I did however take the photos after taking off from the airport en route to Mexicali. In the written introduction to the "video" I said that the photos were taken 35 years ago. The video is simply a story about something that happened that long ago. It is not intended to be about Peñasco today. I have another video on You Tube which uses photos taken in Africa in 1959 and another even earlier than that so this is nothing unusual. I find that people are interested in such historical stories which is why I make the videos.
