There is a reference to "Atlantic salmon" being a good source of omega-3's. However be aware that a lot of fish sold as "Atlantic salmon" is actually farm raised, which is a whole different animal. I had a conversation via email with the marketing Director of one of these smoked salmon products that advertise "Atlantic salmon", and in tiny letters in the back lower left corner it said "farm raised in Chile". When I complained about this is being misleading advertising, she explained that "Atlantic salmon" only refers to the species of the fish, not where it was caught or raised. Buyer beware.

Wow... okay, thisis very misleading, because the marketing label means that ... this is not actually... a good oil. I just realised that, there is something wrong with the actual production and consumption. Cos some oil are actually made via an actual oil refine process. Others, not so good. And it is not either. I am more concerned with the reaction leading down to the inflammation part. I think recently, I have experienced this personally... Some of the manufactured food items, and their combination is not always necessarily a good combination. Therefore, that is not a good... processing method. Cos it is creating residual reactions etc.

So their term "mediterean" means more seafood... (which is similar to the Japanese diet) than compared to the marketing's concept of... McDonald's diet is really just a lot of focus more on... the carbs. The wheat grain... than anything... Calorie counting is really not a good idea to focus on. Definitely not.

Its problem if the fish doesn’t eat algae then it won’t have any DHA and just a waste of money.

ALA is alpha- _linolenic_ (with letter 'n' appearing twice) not 'alpha-linoleic'

Please what's the diffrnts between conjugated acid and linolenic acid?
@CatalystUniversity4 жыл бұрын
In linoleic acid, the double bonds are not conjugated and both in the cis configuration, In conjugated linoleic acid (both types), one of the cis double bonds both isomerizes to trans AND moves 1 carbon atom closer to the remaining cis double bond. This makes the cis double bond and trans double bond conjugated. Do the three omega 3s compete with each other? Can a little of all 3 be taken at the same time? Perhaps is there a synergy?
@CatalystUniversity5 жыл бұрын
For the active site of enzymes such as cyclooxygenase, yes, DHA, EPA, and AA compete with each other. The actual amount of inflammation/anti-inflammation depends on the relative availability of all three fatty acids. Generally, only EPA and DHA are taken together, since these are anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids. AA is a pro-inflammatory omega 6 fatty acid, and you would not take this as a supplement. In fact, most Americans already get way too much AA from vegetable oils such as corn oil, canola oil etc. In terms of synergy, EPA is mostly anti-inflammatory, so it is strongly synergistic with DHA, which is potently anti-inflammatory. There are a few functions of EPA that overlap with AA (pro-inflammatory). That being said EPA is important like DHA, and I would recommend supplementation of them (even a general omega 3 supplement), as many Americans have an omega3:omega6 ratio that is skewed too far toward omega 6 (pro-inflammation).

@@CatalystUniversity What about dihomo-gamma-linoleic-acid? It is a omega 6 acid, but the body produces mostly anti-inflammatory eicosanoids from it

is it true that it's better to take epa and dha separately (epa 500mg-1g in the morning and dha 600mg in the evening, with some food) since they both compete for the same 'receptors'? and what about dpa that is said to be even more anti-inflammatory and an important precursor also for resolvins and protectins to clear and resolve inflammation?

Hey You can get a fatty acid profile or fatty acid test... Look it up online, it looks like a chart with all your levels in fatty acids. www.childrensmn.org/references/lab/chemistry/fatty-acid-profile-of-lipids.pdf

There are none of those that are “essential”. The human body can synthesize ω-9 if needed.
