the woman at the apartment obvuoisly knew something was up and the apartment was quickly cleaned so it could be resold, if it got out that there were murders there it would greatly devalue it, the lawyer at the end was giving him an alibi, the look he gave was "just go with it stupid" its mentioned earlier in the movie that batemans dad owns the company, and someone that high up would pay to cover up his sons murders just to save face

So not sure if you'll see this comment, and I'm sure plenty of others have chimed in: The movie and the book it's based on are meant to be ambiguous as to whether the events as we've seen and been told are real, delusions, or somewhere in-between; which is the real crux of the horror for the audience and Patrick: If everything that happened was real, then because of his place and position in society, in which he is trapped, it doesn't matter how horrible he is, or how violently he lashes out and feeds his darkest impulses and nature, because society will not give him his "catharsis" or "punishment", it won't allow him to be caught, nor give him a deeper understanding of himself, or even closure. And if it's all a delusion? Then Patrick is/has lost any and all semblance of sanity, and there is no certainty in his existence, despite engaging in acts that result in the ultimate certainty: death. He's in a hell of the worst variety, one of his own insanity, and nothing is certain, nothing can be trusted or believed to be true or real anymore. In either case, as his closing monologue says, the pain and misery of his existence is eternal and cannot be changed, no matter what he does or doesn't do, and his internal demons are a constant and inescapable fixture. American Psycho, for me, is up there along with The Exorcist, as two of the most fascinating, interesting, and thoughtful movies of all time. (Neither of which are my anywhere near my favorite movies of all time, mind you. But there is so much to interpret, analyze, consider, and dig into. Every time I watch The Exorcist or American Psycho, I notice another detail, or discover a new or different interpretation, or thematic element. Though, I think that 'Exorcist is superior in that regard, for a lack of better terms.)

It's real. Not a delusion. "Your father's the head of the company, you can do anything you like." by Reese Witherspoon's character is the most important line in the entire movie. He got away with all of it. If you read the novel it explains away that it's a gross satire of what crude things rich white powerful blue bloods can do and get away with, with impunity. This was the decadence of the yuppie era (Young Urban Professional) when Wall Street was booming in the Savings and Loan junk bonds market. One call to his lawyer and it all went away, just like that. You kids seeing Bale as Batman first not the other way around like I did is the thing that makes you all uncomfortable most with the film. Also funny how people are uncomfortable with the dog dying but not uncomfortable with the token black guy dying at the start of the film. America

This is a great satire of the self-absorbed, status chasing types of alpha males set in around I think the late 80s Wall Street scene. The business cards, getting reservations at Dorsia on Friday nights, the location of your apartment, having a tanning bed at home, loads of self-care products, are all symbols of status and standing. Others are constantly confusing Patrick with one person or another, and at times he leads others to believe that he's not Patrick Bateman. The concept of identity is fluid here I think because Patrick's own sanity is in the same state: shifting and sliding. Towards the end after the shootout with the cops, he goes into the wrong building but is still "recognized" (though by the wrong name) by the lobby attendant. Both Leto and the lawyer at the very end don't recognize him as Patrick Bateman, they mistake him for someone else (and in the case of Leto Bateman knows this and tries to use it to his advantage). The sketches in his planner suggest that all of the "killings" were just fantasies.

The stage musical (that is brilliant) leans much more towards it not happening, that he's going insane but it's all in his head. The undercurrent of the book, film and musical is all about consumerism, the desperate need to exist and have everything that everybody else has. It's about the dirty side of the 80s finacial boom, and how it turned the worst of people in to monsters. Its very clever. Patrick is like a warning.

How did you get so far into the movie still thinking it took place in the 2000s?? Then notice the business card scene there is a GLARING spelling error everyone is so focused on the looks they dont see the error. the real estate agent did she work for his father, or did she just want to "steal" the apartment and make millions

It's meant to be confusing. Earlier in the film, Patrick mentioned that he has a complicated relationship with his father. You can see when Patrick wakes up the blood all over the apartment is clean, not a spot to be found. Even those heads he kept in there vanished. Noticing how people in this movie have been paying attention and being aware of the deaths of several employees and/or easygoing citizens, therefore in conclusion while the people can believe what they want with their theories on what actually happened, I personally think the people ignoring it were paid off by Patrick's father to say what they ultimately said (nice joke, Patrick Bateman is a dweeb, I had dinner with Paul at London, etc.)
