Trying to increase your pull-ups max reps without working on your overall fitness and body weight management, will hold you back.
My current max pull-ups is 28, by doing more cardio along with weighted pull-ups twice a week I’m planning on getting to 30 plus pull-ups in the coming weeks.

There is big science behind what you are doing, I was not aware of it until recently but it seems to be legit - when you train cardio (in zone 2 as they say) at least two things happens: 1. Your blood and cardiovascular system become more capable of caring over O2 and other supplies to where it is needed 2. Your mitochondrias in your muscles became better trained to process the waste products (lactic acid, etc.) and turn them back to energy in the blood stream. So your trained legs are helping your upper body to recover more energy.. nice :)

Thank you for taking the time to write that. What you’ve explained is what I was trying to say while jogging along the beach front! You’ve explained it so much better, more scientifically! Awesome.

I'm one year older and up to 22 pull-ups (Only managed one muscle up - this is still elusive), I run/mtb a lot with my dog off road and always look for steep hills steps to go up and down. I found the biggest change for me was when I stopped eating bread/buscuits, cakes etc. then I lost lots of flab and my pullup count started increasing. I'm up to about 8 20kg weighted pullups. Nice to see you in Weston, not far from me - cheers

Wow we are quite similar in many respects. I’m cutting down on bread and cake, but still have the odd slice. 20kg weighted x 8 is good. I’m sure you’ll get the muscle up, if you just get the technique right. You’ll have the strength. I was in WSM on business, so couldn’t resist the opportunity to go to the beach. Will be back in a few weeks time I suspect!

Something that helped me a lot to overcome asthma is a constant hard deep breath while cardio. That helped me to avoid choking after running 20 meters and make 5km every session. I'm heavy so in way to avoid injuries, work in my strenght and survive through 4-5 sessions per week what I do is 2 5x10 sets (say decline rings pushups then inverted ring rows or australian ring pushups then assisted ring dips) within my 5 km run as a part of my training per session. One set x5 with my heavy bodyweight, then 250 meters so my arms and specially my hands can recover 8 months ago couldn't run 10 20 meters without almost dying and last month someone tried to steal some of my stuff in the park where I train and couldn't believe I catch the mthrfckr within a minute after a +150 meters sprint. So it works

i try my best to bike and run with our 7 month old husky/ american eskimo and needless to say , that breed mixture will keep you fit and on your feet. i have noticed since doing this i have noticed it easier to do calisthenic type hold pushups without turning red in the face. good luck my friend!! you are making your dream come true. i applaud you

Thank you Tim, I certainly am enjoying the process, and the little wins along the way. Running with a husky sounds idyllic. I’m really hoping that the little cardio I am doing does pay off over time. And I turn increases my pull-up numbers. I’ll, be sticking to my program for a few more weeks then just before Christmas, going for a pull up max attempt. Really hope I’m going to show an improvement.

I freaking knew it !!! As soon I start watching your video I start to wonder where are you, because this beach looks familiar. I used to live in WSM in 2005-06 and I loved it. Really nice not too big town. All my cousins still live there and sometimes I’m visiting them. The town spread out over the years. Interesting what you are saying about cardio. I never thought about how many pull ups I can do but definitely 30 pull ups it’s a hell of the cardio workout. Me and my buddy for a cardio workout we are doing 5x5 pull over on the bar, quick decline to the ground, burpee and from the last faze of the burpee from the squat explosive jump to the bar. 5 times 5 sets. When we bring gym bros they give up after first or second set because they are lightheaded or not ready for it. 😊 Great content and keep going! Maybe we will do workout together someday.

Hahaha yes I was in WSM on business, and couldn’t resist the chance to go for a run along the beach when the tide was out. Amazing place! Your cardio workout looks really good, I might give that a go myself. Can do so much with a bar! Here days I live in Hampshire, so not often in WSM. Would be good to work out one day! Have a great weekend!

Thank you for the inspiration. I usually hang for a total of 4-5+ mins./day. Was about to do my third set to put me over 5, and, because of you, decided I'll put on my weighted backpack (about 28 lbs, or about 13 kilos) for this one. I've hit a ceiling of almost 2:20 for each hang and, maybe, the weight will move me along to the next level!

Hahaha because of me! 😂, pleased to help. I find weighted pull-ups is helping me too. I’ll be testing my max in a few weeks after I completed 6 weeks of weighted pull-ups, twice a week.

@@funwithcalisthenics After my weighted hang, I decided to do some pullups with the extra 13 kilos. Embarrassed that I could only do 4 without straining. The good news is that I probably have a lot of room for growth/strength gains with this!

Nice work and summary, my friend. I was up to 24 recently myself and looking for more, but in early November, I caught Covid (first time; I'm fully vaccinated and boosted). Nearly recovered now, but I lost a couple of pull-up numbers. Now working on going upwards again...

You are an inspiration.. I love watching your video. I did 6 to 7 pullups last year and plateaued ..i feel i lost my strength, and i can only do 3 pullups now..any tips for me? I will work on pullups from this week . Do you do strength training to get more pullups or just doing pullups?
@funwithcalisthenics
@funwithcalisthenics 6 ай бұрын
Hi, over the last 6 months or so, most of my training is now pull-ups. And recently I have been doing them with added weights too. But I also do, push-ups, dips, squats, and leg raises, all body weight. Then recently I’ve started doing some biceps curls too. Then some gentle jogging, walking, cycling as and when I can. Finally, I train for bar muscle ups, and in the somber months I work out with gym rings too. That’s it! I think the trick is to keep mixing it up, keep it a varied and interested, and stay consistent. Plan to something, however small, every day.

Lately i have been doing weighted paused pull ups (holding at the top of my reps). You should try doing all your weighted pull ups like it for a bit. Your biceps and abs will be ruined the first few times…. But stick with it and you will be like iron.

@@funwithcalisthenics yeah honestly really its good. Remember you will need to use a smaller weight as your counting seconds instead of reps. Aim for a 2 second hold at the top.
