As a Nigerian who grew up in Nigeria, then moved to the US,I can see from watching you tubers and taking to Ghanaian friends that Ghana is a completely different place than Nigeria in all aspects. Safe and laid back. When I was in University in Nigeria, a student of my school was returning from a night club late at night with some friends and were stopped at a police checkpoint .The long and short of the story is she ended up shot dead by the police! I am sure everyone is aware of what is going on in Nigeria with SARS . Nigerians are not exactly afraid of the Nigerian police ,but we are cautious around them, and the less we have to do with them the better!

@Joseph Brown - and the police in America where u are based? Are they better than police in Nigeria. Each country has it's own peculiar problems. Ghana has their, there has been a huge turnaround in Ghana due to JJ Rawlings. We had Buhari/Idiagbon regimes in Nigeria transforming Nigeria at that time. Where inpatient and complaining. It's resulted in another coup that brought IBB to power. This started going down again from the Second Republican turmoil we had witnessed. We we better off today? The answer is No! Everything is not fantastic in Ghana u should know and Nigeria political activists that were fleeing Nigeria during Abacha regime and returning started settling in Ghana to watch developments are they were unfolding during Abubakar to transferred power to OBJ under civilian rule. Ghana came to prominence with Nigerians because people like Dele Momodu (Ovation) who encouraged Nigerians to visit Ghana. Ghana was never of interest to Nigerians pre-Abacha. I rest my case.

Hi Tony, as someone who was born in Ghana my advice to you is don't encourage her or any police officer for that matter. Since she let you go that day she wouldn't ask or remind you of the pizza even if she sees you again, or come face to face with you. Just make sure you don't do anything wrong by her to stop you again. She may not be nice a second time if you fall in her trap. You see the police in Ghana knows taking money or a thing of value is wrong so they are careful when they do it. The reason is they don't know who is behind the wheel. Please stay safe and enjoy Ghana with your family.

I shared the same experience when visiting Ghana. I wasn’t driving but I had a video camera and the driver warned me that if I looked like I had some money they would pull us over. They did because the car didn’t have a registration decal and cost me eighty cedes. Back then it was 24 to 1 US so I didn’t mind. But what I have been trying to explain to the youth of today is that the feeling of peace that you experience in Africa verses America is un describable. America can no longer be our only place to call home. They hate us and don’t want us here. 73 million people voted for hate,racism , bigotry, lies, cheating , corruption, putting children in cages, castration of young Latino women and they call themselves God fearing people. You guys are lucky because it’s going to get worse. Have been working on a project for self sustainable communities with renewable energy to bring back to Africa and then I’m outa here .

Police encounters in Ghana is more comic relief than fear and danger. I've dealt with them a couple of times and as usual they were "thirsty" and needed "water". On one occasion, they were two and as one was busy asking for this and that, the other simply signaled me to ignore his colleague and go on my merry way and that's exactly what I did. I find them funny! Should Tony give the Pizza? Well, if he gives it, she will become his friend forever, trust me. But it is still corruption, even if low key, and that perpetuates the problem. Tough decision to make. I'll let Leo rule on this - LOL.

Fun show, from now you are going to be safe here in Ghana. I recall driving in Lagos back in 1975-77 when the rules restricting odd or even number plates could not drive on certain days. The ‘traffic police’ were all over the place harassing, frightening , bullying and demanding bribes. It’s a relief to be out of all that. Trying times here in 🇬🇧 too it’s getting edgy. I look forward to a peaceful life in Ghana come 2022!

In Ghana. It's not really bribe. It's like a culture. With giving her the pizza, you immediately gain a friend. That's a connection. If you were to ever need help or something you always have someone. For example I gave a police officer a tip before and when I needed a police officer to guard an event he did it. So it's just a cultural thing.

This is by far the happiest I've seen Tony since his arrival in Ghana. Who knew it took a few run-ins with law enforcement. Police officers in Ghana are paid about $500 on average a month, and many a lot less. This explains why they go around indirectly, and artfully soliciting bribes. Personally think you should consider going beyond pizza, and actually have a chat with the lady. Try to understand the root cause of their problem, why it is they solicit bribes, and perhaps what can be done to alleviate the problem. The solution is obviously, police officers getting paid more, so the next step is finding out how to lobby for that change. Whichever way you slice it, creatively soliciting money from people is never a good thing and we need to figure out a solution to the problem, rather than make light of it or complain as most Ghanaians do. I think you both are in a position of priviledge and can have an immense impact more than you think. It may start with the pizza, who knows?!

Encountering Ghanaian police is like a comic movie drama which I enjoyed all the time. In my area, whenever am driving pass them I intentionally draw their attention by creating a scene, they pull me over and we have chit chat. Now they notice my tricks and whenever am driving and they see my car approaching, they turn faces away probably thinking he is coming to waste our time and energy. They friendly , loving and fun especially when you interact along.

I’m a Native American married to a Ghanaian and when I visit Ghana I get pulled over constantly. I think they think I’m Lebanese lol. I have been lucky that I’ve never paid a bribe or fine, even if I was doing something wrong. I think as long as you show them respect they let you go.
@jewel93134 жыл бұрын
You probably look white that’s why they give you no problem. I mean let’s be real.

IN GHANA, THE POLICE ARE CALLED PEACE OFFICERS. THEY MAINTAIN LAW AND ORDER TOWARDS PEACEFUL EXISTENCE OF ALL IN THE COUNTRY.
@babsdabre10564 жыл бұрын
@@jewel9313 Even if you are white it doesn't make any difference. If a Ghanaian police officer wants to extort money from you your race doesn't scare them. In fact you are even safer if you are black with a good car cos it makes them think you might be a "Big" man or woman. Exactly what happened with Tony.
@patriotenigma48414 жыл бұрын
You are not mistaken cause all they need is respect most often to appreciate they are doing good.

I have been pulled over a few times when visiting Ghana. Once my aunt was pulled over for not wearing a seat belt and just smiled sweetly and was waved away. The next time I was feeling ill so we were going a bit fast. When my husband explained to the policeman, he just told us to slow down and let us go. Then the funniest time was on the way from the airport, when an old policeman stopped us at a regular checkpoint and had a chat to the driver about something in the news and just wanted a chat as he must have been bored. They all meant no harm and even though they have guns, they aren't so scary. The Kumasi police band are amazing singers and instrumentalists and play at events. They are regular people who are on crappy wages. The key is to be firm but friendly and dont be either too confrontational or too timid. Same goes at the airport. Firm but friendly humility works wonders

Am glad you gave the police officer that look. I am a Ghanaian and I get really offended when pulled over by an officer for nothing, other than to solicit for money. Am glad you guys are helping put that system of corruption in check. I wished more Ghanaians would do same. I love your hilarious take on your encounters though!!!! As for the pizza, I don't really know. Hahahahaha. Maybe you can go there around Christmas or a holiday to give the entire police division a present so it doesn't come across as a bribe. That way, you get to network with people in authority. You never know when they can be of help to you.
