Sir please there’s common language in Ghana we called “ Twi Profo” literally means twi English and when a Ghanaian tells you Ghana does not belong to you it’s simply means the person is speaking “twi profo”. And when tranlated in English it meaning changed completely so don’t be too much offended thank you 😍

@nanabrimpong3485
@nanabrimpong3485 Жыл бұрын
@Expat Life Ghana Ayo the comment, "Ghana doesn't belong to you people ", is a very common statement they use with all of us especially when they noticed your intellect and staying on your legal grounds. It's not to say you are a foreigner, because they feel challenged by you and when anyone challenges them they know that person is either connected to someone in high position in such as government, police, army or judiciary/lawyer so they hate that a lot and use that statement to show they are not backing down. Because many at times anyone who challenges them gets to use the knowledge of law or a superior over them sometimes even just a phone call so they usually make these statements. I am local and myself and friends have got the exact statement several times. Because most people are scared of police in Ghana and immediately get subdued just in contact or stop. But I grew near a barracks and I respect the uniform But not intimidated by it and so are my friends so they tell us that all the time. Sometimes it goes like "you think you can do whatever you want in this country ", or "you think Ghana belongs to you ", "I am the law I can do whatever I want," "I will arrest you if you keep talking ", and many more. There are some stickers like doctors stickers that they are not allowed to stop but they do sometimes. Saying this because I was with a friend who is a doctor and they pulled him over, he pointed out that stickers and the guy said exactly what you got too. He was like "you are a doctor so what? I am also here to do my job, I enforce the law you think you are a doctor so you own this country ? You are on the road and I am doing my checks, I need your license,insurance and car document ".😂😂😂😂 So Ayo don't be offended at all. It has nothing to do with you at all being and African American though it does sound that way coincidentally, it wasn't that at all. Others might say because you sounds a foreigner, it's not the case because if it was he would have said go to your country and do that over there, or say is this how you do things in your country, and remind you this is Ghana. Not defending their actions. Also in Ghana people touch/tap to show they are not being aggressive and it's very common even on a regular day out there nothing to do even with the police. That touching as long as its not in an appropriate place is not an offence in Ghana. It's only n the west. An African American lady had the same experience and made a big deal about the guy touching her and felt threaten or abused which wasn't the case to the guy because it's very common in Africa not only in Ghana like tapping your shoulder or arm. It's not easy dealing with them at all. I was in a taxi once and a senior officer in uniform cut him off and pulled the taxi over and starts threatening the driver of arrest. I was a passenger and I intervened that what was his offence, he said non of your business. Then I said good. Driver move the taxi now and then he gets angry and starts shouting who are you? I said you will find out and he started getting more angry with me and said he would arrest me and send me to jail and I said he would also be taken to court for the reckless driving he did even across a zebra crossing with people and that wasn't a police car with any siren so he will also face the law. Then he asked me for my id and I told him I am not the driver and I he has no right to ask me for license or id but I have his shoulder number and I would make sure he hears from me through his superiors. Immediately I saw him trying to intimidate me out of fear and said to me "you think you are above the law?", I can arrest you and I said I will be going to your headquarters right from here. Immediately he got in his car and left. He wanted to get some money off the driver but I spoiled his day because I intervened. The driver was nearly wet and was asking me if I am military or police and I told him none of it. Just know my rights. And I was watching my surroundings all the time so I saw all he did and he was surprised I noticed all his driving offences.

People just give them money without even knowing why they stopped them because of panic and not to waste their time and this is what makes this bad behaviour difficult to get rid off in the police. Not all are corrupt but if given they take because they see it as free money. Which isn't right for their job. But the government also nerds to pay them well. Lots also join the police for this reason and not for the love of the job.

"Getting worse" is an understatement. The number of mentally ill who are shot by police is alarming... We hear of the unarmed mentally ill (IQ 55), homeless man, Larry Eugene Price, Jr., who walked into a police station and aimed his finger gun at the police and was promptly arrested for terrorism. He had no gun - just his fingers. They put him in jail for months and held on a $100 bail, staved him until he died. Coming in he weighed 200lbs. At death, he weighed about 90lbs. Then there is the case of the HS teacher who crashed his car, flagged the police for help and was killed. And then the innumerable case of children, some as young as 7, dragged from primary school to jail for offenses that not even crimes or offenses for that matter such as witnessing other people fight. I can gon and on for days.

My friend and I traveled to Ghana in 2019. In a three hour period our driver was stopped five times by various police. The driver was never asked for money. He said that the only reason the police didn't jack him up for money was because the police realized right away that my friend and I were foreign. The driver said that one of the stops was by a couple of national police officers After the second stop, I made a point to roll down the window and say something to my friend so they could hear our accents. Before we traveled to Ghana, we were warned not to rent a car because these stops were bound to happen.

Now, a good friend of mine is a ghana police officer and I will just call her the next time i'm there and get pulled over. The police have no idea what impression they are making on the public when they do this. It might determine if someone would opt to settle there who might bring jobs and business to the Ghana economy. Definitely something has to be done.

Wow, running for the rain, falling into the pit!!!!!!!! Where is our chance then???? I have been living in the United States for forty-one years and never encountered such behavior here with any Police Officer. I reside in Montgomery County Maryland where Police Officers have the best training. I remember a terrible snowy, cold and windy day, I stopped at a gas station to fill up my tank. Accidentally, the car was locked with the keys in the ignition running. Across the Street, there is a 7Eleven. I could not resist the cold outside for two minutes, I ran there for shelter. When the employees saw me, they rushed to offer me a free cup of coffee so that I could warm up. There, was a Police Officer, he only heard the conversation with the employees, he volunteered to take me home so I could have the spare key. He waited for me to enter my house, grabbed a spare key, and go back to the car. He was a white Police Officer. He was not a so-called brother. That {good deed} and {human kindness}, was the best experience of my life I shall never forget. May God protect that man and his family every single day of their lives. Some action must be taken, before it gets worst. America says go back to Africa, then Africa says you don't belong there. Where do we belong????? Should God create a new planet for us so we can live in peace? That Idiot must know that Afro-Americans don't go to Ghana to take anyone else job neither seek for Government help. They are simply there to invest, to spend, more importantly, to find peace. I was willing to go. But after what I see and hear in that video! Hum, I will think twice!!!

We did not know we had to renew our road worthy certificate yearly and we were late by about 10 days. I called their bluff to go to the Police Station and court as I told them I have never been to court in Ghana so I am interested in the experience. Sat at the police station for a long time ( we had recently retired we had enough time to sit around) . We were finally told to come the next day to go to court and they kept my husband’s driving Certificate. I repeated my interest in having the Ghana court experience. Returned the next day appropriately dressed for court. In the meantime we had also gone to the Gov’t agency close to the same police station and renewed our road worthy certificate. At this point they just returned my husband’s driving license and we left. NO BRIBE PAID!!!

Tony and Ayo, you are doing a great job with your channel. Now, with the uncalled for behavior of the police, I would suggest that you get on as many popular live radio shows as you possibly can, and put the police and their corrupt system on blast. Lay emphasis on the negative image the corrupt behavior of the police sends to the very people like you, foreigners, that Ghana seeks to attract to her shores. I’m a Ghanaian domiciled in the States and I’m appalled! Tony and Ayo, you are both charismatic and articulate and those two traits can work magic. Please get on radio and TV if possible, turn over the footage of the incident to the authorities. Keep up the great work!!

Wow! I can not believe how aggressive the police were. Kudos to Ayo for standing her ground. He had no right touch her. Thankfully you have the incident on video. These guys need to learn that their strong arm tactics are unprofessional and unacceptable. Maybe this video will prompt people in charge of the Ghana police to take action against these rogue cops.

It's really sad to learn this is happening in Ghana. I am Ghanaian and have been driving for 26 years and haven't experienced such constant harassments. Yes I paid bride once because my license had expired and I was pulled over. Didn't want to go to court. I don't know if there's a deliberate attempt to target foreigners though. I am sure if these reports gets to the IGP he will do something about it. There was a time when the police made it their business to harass citizens with checking drivers license and it became too much. Once it got into the media the then IGP asked that such checks be stopped. Ghana Police does have some corrupt elements I agree but if you learn how to deal with them you can prevent incident escalating. Always be respectful and tell them you have no money if they ask. Once you have done nothing wrong you have nothing to fear. Most driving offenses in Ghana results in fines not jail terms. So don't be afraid to go to jail. That said, please don't call their bluff on a Friday evening else you will be thrown in jail for the weekend knowing you can't get a lawyer in time and the courts will close till Monday. 😄😄👍

"That said, please don't call their bluff on a Friday evening else you will be thrown in jail for the weekend knowing you can't get a lawyer in time and the courts will close till Monday." My brother told me that happened to him once, here in America. He said the that the judge went fishing and that's why he had to stay in jail for the whole weekend. I think he was driving with an expired license.

Is it possible to avoid paying the bribes, how long will the police harassment last, an hour, two hours?
@florencesenya1506
@florencesenya1506 Жыл бұрын
@@altheasegura671 yes you can choose not to pay if you've done nothing wrong. Just make sure you have all you need to have eg fire extinguisher, first aid box etc so they don't use that against you. If you did something wrong then accept to be charged and process for court. You will not be jailed for minor traffic offenses. It's usually a fine and be prepared to have time to waste and loads of patience. 😄😄 They will waste your time

Very common. My wife and I drove to cape coast from Accra and was pulled over 6 times and all they wanted was money. One officer didn’t even wait for us to stop and he has his hand out expecting us to put money in it. I’m sure we got pulled over because we had DV plates which r temporary and I heard they pulled people over with those more than regular plates

The best thing to do in such situation is to negotiate the amount with the officer or tell him to take you to the station. Nothing will happen to you. No jail. Nothing.

Tony and Ayo, I’m really disappointed to hear about your encounter with Ghana Police. As a Ghanaian Living in the UK for over 20 years, I have never been stopped by the police during this period even though my job often requires me to drive to around. I would advice you to report their despicable conduct to the IGP, whom I believe would deal with these officers.

You should report this matter to the leadership of the police station he is based at. When he says Ghana does not belong to "you people", does not mean he gets to lay his hands on you twice? Under what law, is he entitled to do whatever he likes to you, as you don't have any rights and he can do whatever he likes to you, as Ghana belongs to him and the rest of his corrupt colleagues. I am a British born Ghanaian and I am so sorry for this idiots behaviour. Quiet clearly he lacks the knowledge of which law of the land he supposed to operate under from. I am feeling so much shame right now. Once again, I am so sorry for your bad experience. You and your husband are as Ghanaian as I am. Quiet clearly, I would not be surprised if you or any other person who does not speak with a local accent would be his target for bribe collection. You should give some serious consideration to reporting him to his leadership at his station. I don't understand why you did not show his face from your phone recording. These corrupt police are an embarrassment to Mother Ghana. Good luck to you.

I was driving at the age of 17 from a poor family without driver's license and never bribed any officer, never. That's why mother was in support of me leaving the country, b'cos I hated giving bribe to anyone, not even when I went for my passport in those days in 80's🇬🇭 I always stood my ground as a little fella 5.6'
