I just picked one of these up in Chicago for half the prices the seller was asking. It has a misfire, but I had to get a new tensioner and belt put on this weekend before I can do any diagnostics. I’m gonna guess yours jumped time and bent valves.
@ShawnzeyRacing7 ай бұрын
Nice work! And yea the common guess seems to be timing chain/valve related.
@victormanuelparraexposito28197 ай бұрын
last year I got an X3 35i with two down holes and low compression on the rest, it had an exhaust vanos timing code which after getting the jig on resulted on the engine being out of timing on the exhaust side, did a leak down and air was escaping thru the exhaust valves, head out, light down the exhaust port and found 4 outta 6 cylinders had bent valves, got new ebay special valves lol and some fcp parts kits and got it running pretty good for under $600. Considering the engine itself is 4k I would say repair it if the bottom end is fine and sell it.
@ShawnzeyRacing7 ай бұрын
A lot of people suggesting timing/valves more and more in the comments and starting to convince me! We will find out shortly!
@JamesAllen3007 ай бұрын
Common on these is the oil pump bolts come lose and then it's good night vienna to that engine. I'm going to say that potentially it's spun the bearings on the crank too.

Good progress man! N55 owner here also and that engine is terribly neglented from all the oil leaks 😂 my guess for the compression things would probably be also pointing to the timing and damaged valves, firing order on this engine starts from cyl 1-5.. so could be the cause 😄 we will see

We all start with no experience with cars! So don't let that discourage you. I think the best way to learn is pick a project you would like to do, watch a KZbin video or read some forums on how to do it, and dig in! If anyone ever tells you that you shouldn't do something because you don't know how to do it, they are being ridiculous. If we never tried things that we didn't know how to do we would all still be laying on the ground unable to walk and talk. That being said it is much easier to work on cars when you have more then one car so if something breaks your not stuck without a ride...

In my case I already had the tranny out so I just undid the motor mounts, took off the AC compressor from the engine (did not disconnect any lines as the AC was working fine so I didn't want to mess with it) and moved it over to the left side. Kept the bumper in place as well as the AC radiator and intercooler. With that and the downpipe off was able to pull it out upwards. I came across the same issue of the tow hook but ended up just bolting on a plate where the oil filter housing goes and bolting a chain onto that. I've seen it happen on rebuilt engines that they used those cheap china rings/kits, and they lose the heat tempering over time and get soft and lose all compression. Wasn't on a bmw though. Cylinder walls were perfect, literally just needed re-rings. That would be absolute best case scenario IMO.
@ShawnzeyRacing7 ай бұрын
Yea I thought it would be fun for both me and you guys if I took more of the car apart. It did end up making for a long video. But I also appreciated how easy it was to get to everything with out breaking my back! And I'm always so nervous that I'll drop the engine going up and over the front! 😬 And I agree if we can get a super cheap and easy fix for the engine then we'll have some budget for some fun parts 😎

May sound weird, but I think he was sucking water which damaged the engine, but not completely. No professional repair, but amateur trials leaving gaskets and parts not fit together tightly. Then driving on and ignoring the increased oil loss. As a consequence all burned off. You may find valve, crankshaft and piston damage and water in engine and gear box.
