Jarvis Cocker wrote this about a rich Greek girl he used to be infatuated with at art school back in the 1980s who casually said once that she wanted to move to Hackney to live like the common people there. This song is a scathing critique of the social voyeurism that some wealthy people embody to sound or feel cool, and massively fails to truly understand the actual devastation and hardship found in the everyday lives of people poorer than them.

"You will never understand how it feels to live your life. With no meaning or control, with nowhere left to go. You are amazed that they exist , and they burn so bright whilst you can only wonder why" That lyric (only incuded on the full version) has deep meaning to anyone born and raised in working class Britain. Amen Jarvis!

You pair are _exactly_ the people this song is nailing. 'You will never live your life with no power or control and with nowhere else to go', because your dads will fix it all. The song's about a girl (symbolising a trend in British society at the time it was released) who's middle class and from wealth, but who thinks it's cool to pretend to be working class and poor. The singer's saying that she'll never understand what it's like because she's from a comfortable background and has her daddy's wealth as a safety net.

This is such a great song but I sometimes think it wouldn't cross the Atlantic very well, because there is so much UK slang and British cultural references in Pulp's songs generally, that Americans might not get. Even the expression "common people" the title of this song, which means working class, the bottom rung of society, but might not be an expression in use in America.

I missed this in the 90s, mainly because after getting disillusioned with the Stone Roses I just ignored everything smelling of British pop. But it's a scathing social commentary, and yes, if you're poor or working class and somehow ended up studying at a good school you met hideous people like this woman.
