This song is a perfect send-up of 'poverty tourism.'

It’s about living in the British class system.

There's an extra verse in the album version which gets really quite angry. Also, William Shatner (of Star Trek fame) did a brilliant cover version of this song.

This was from a time when working class people began to proudly flaunt their class affiliation. Poor became cool. Embracing working class culture became nearly fashion accessory, so much so that upper class people (class tourists) began emulating them. This song is a response to those people. Most of the album where this comes from, aptly named “Different Class”, follows this theme. It’s an absolutely fantastic album.
The woman is from a rich family, Common people are referred to the working class of Britain aka the poor. This woman wants to experience what is to live like the common people but he is saying that there is no way she can understand. She has options and prospects in her life but they dont, they will work the same kinds of jobs, live in the same shitty apartments and settle for drinking and screwing as entertainment and he finds her wanting those things to be stupid and insulting. She will never experience what it is to be a common person because at any moment she can call her dad to get her out of the situation but do poor people have that option? Nope they have to live with it.

St. Martins is a prestigious art college which I think is worth a mention cause its more like she is exploiting him and his background to add depth to her art which ultimately she can't because at anytime she can escape by calling her dad.

The working class aren't always poor, it's complicated. For example, some office workers may be considered middle class due to their background and upbringing, but the tradesmen making a lot more money than them would still be considered working class.

I saw one of your other videos just now and almost commented that you need to react to this song. Probably the best song to come out of the UK in the 90’s. Now you should react to them playing this live at Reading 2011.

Pulp is a britpop band who gained a following and success in the UK during the 90s alongside bands like Oasis and Blur. Pulp was seen at the time as the quirky, slightly off-beat alternative to the football-anthem-rock of Oasis and the lo-fi indie rock of Blur. I recommend reacting to their songs 'Disco 2000' and 'Babies'.

99.9% of us are common people, we keep our heads down, we work , we survive and we hope tomorrow is a little brighter but we are pragmatic enough to deal with the truth that this is reality, we are not shiny movie stars, we are not millionaires, we are not leaders of nations.....we are the common people who make the world turn, we may not be the face of a generation but without us there is no next generation and without us the world stops turning....remember that all you common people like me

Great song, great, meaningful lyrics. Another VERY good song you could react to by Pulp is "Underwear"

This the dumbed down version and half the pertinent parts of the song are missing; Like a dog lying in a corner They will bite you and never warn you Look out they'll tear your insides out 'Cos everybody hates a tourist Especially one who thinks it's all such a laugh Yeah and the chip stains grease Will come out in the bath You will never understand How it feels to live your life With no meaning or control And I'm with nowhere left to go You are amazed that they exist And they burn so bright While you can only wonder Why rent a flat above a shop

You missed the fact that there is hardship in living common, but also a lot of joy and laughter. She won't experience the hardships, but she also won't experience the chaotic joy either. She'll live a safe, luxurious, boring life.

@@HLakin98 Firstly, FYI, you double posted. Secondly, all pop music is influenced by what came before, so that's a ridiculous comment. Pulp is britpop, and no they weren't embarrassed by that. They appeared on, and helped organise, a TV special called "This is Britpop", along with blur and several other bands. I think that makes them pretty definitively britpop. QED. With the exception exception of a few bands that claim to be modern punk in a semi-ironic way, punk blossomed and then died at the end of the seventies. I was there for both, having been born at the end of the sixties and being a DJ and radio producer in the nineties.
