This first time I made this it was with my daughter. It was wonderful. She is an excellent cook. When I make it now I use a cotton bar towel. I get them at Walmart in a 10 pack. I wash them twice. In making the cake I sprinkle lots of powdered sugar all over the bar towel. It’s works perfectly. Such a yummy cake! Thanks Tom and Melissa ❤

This was Mom's special Thanksgiving dessert, and this year was the first year without it. Mom is still around, but she now lives in an assisted living center, and she is not up to doing this type of stuff any longer. It was definitely missed. I can't believe I have not been doing this right all these years! I always powdered the towel, turned out the cake ontovthe powdered towel, THEN powdered the top of the cake and rolled it up into the towel. And have never used that much cream cheese. Now I can't wait to try this the right way❣️❣️

I learned from my mom how to make any kind of cake roll. She taught me to lay down a flour sack tea towel, cover that with powdered sugar. Bake your cake, invert onto the powdered towel. Then trim the edges of your cake before you roll it up. Then carry on with the filling. Just saying. My mom was from southern Arkansas.

That method works, too. Tom just prefers to cover the cake itself with the powdered sugar and then the towel and then invert it. I think he does a better job of getting less of a cloud of powdered sugar this way. But either way works. Thanks so much for watching our channel. Happy Thanksgiving.

Thank you for this recipe. My Grandma made these for Thanksgiving. We haven't had any for years, so I'm going to surprise the family. 🙏🤞score after cake comes out of the oven and you've flipped it onto the T towel. Start at one short end and move to other end scoring lightly about 1/2" apart. Then roll up to cool. Do Not Cut to deeply. You don't want to go all the way through. Use a bread & butter knife or the tip of a pairing knife.

You can do it! Trim off the end pieces when it's all finished so you'll have a pretty looking log (and you can enjoy those end pieces before hand!). Happy Thanksgiving!

I really enjoy your channel on KZbin. I have never reached out to anyone previously. When I watched your program on pumpkin roll, I felt I could add to your procedure. I have made many pumpkin rolls and like your family, have to make several for others. I have never been shown and went by a recipe. One thing I do, which is different, is the top of the cake is rolled inside of roll. When I remove parchment from pan, I slide parchment off pan onto tea towel. I do not flip it. I actually roll up with parchment, still attached and remove once cool. Rolling the topside to inside of roll helps cake from breaking; gives a better look to outside; and if you use nuts, the outside is still smooth as nuts are to inside. Also, powered sugar is to inside, when rolled up. Of course it can always be added to top, once rolled up. I don’t know if my procedure is a happy mistake, but has always worked for me. You may want to try. Happy cooking.

My mom has made this since I was a little girl. She is now 89 years old and still makes it for us at thanksgiving. Her mom made it, so it’s now a third generation recipe for us. I’m sure it goes farther back. My mom only cans cow pumpkin (it’s the pale pink ones) and that’s all she will use in her pumpkin rolls (a little set in her ways, wouldn’t you say lol). Hi Melissa and Tom. So sorry I got your name wrong Tom in the previous episode. This is another yummy dish to make for our Christmas dessert. Even though it's hot weather (summer) here in NZ, we still have a hot dressed leg of ham. Roast chicken, roast vegetables, salads, and dishes family bring to the table. I prepare most of it the day before. I get out my Christmas crockery and flatware. Christmas cake was made two weeks ago. In a couple of weeks I will make sweet mince pies. I also make the traditional English boiled plum pudding. And that is as close to thanks giving we get. I guess you guys won't know what some of our stuff is. We always have a bunch of people who would be alone. The next day we eat left overs. Thanks for another yummy dessert 😊😊❤❤
