The door to the building being locked from BOTH sides is weird. I have never run into this issue (being trapped in a building) in the United States. Is this setup not uncommon in NZ? Is there some way to escape during a fire even if you don't have a key/card, such as alarmed fire exits, or the door unlocking in case of power outage/fire alarm? (if not, such a setup would be a major fire code violation in the US)

@@upanddownadventures There was an Emergency Release touch button beside each keycard reader that I guess I could’ve used… but that then alarms the door with a perpetual high-pitched beep until it is manually checked & disarmed, and then idk if they’ll catch me by looking at CCTV to see who did it _etc etc.,_ so I didn’t try it. It’s worryingly not the first time I’ve been trapped in a confined area with all possible egresses either blocked or keycarded off. It seems New Zealand isn’t as strict on fire exit requirements as most other anglophone countries, as I’ve been told by several Australian enthusiasts that this setup would *NOT* slide over there…
