We can't ignore the fact punching with weights does increase dexterity, speed, and power, sure if an amateur uses them wrong it could develop bad habits as you said, but if done right it's an effective training method. I'd advise doing a weighted training set then do the same length regularly without weights.

I've seen a lot of great fighters doing not so great exercises, or just flat out junk training. You've got to ask: did shadow boxing with the weights actually contribute to making Floyd a good boxer or not? I know a lot of good fighters who shadowbox with weights and they honestly believe it helps- and here's why I think that is: it slows you down and feels harder. We're already conditioned to think that this kind of action makes us stronger/better (ie: lifting heavy weights increases strength). But with the weighted shadowboxing, there's the extra benefit of the placebo affect (which actually can have a profound physical impact in some cases) for when we put the weights down and relax the muscles again, then we can move much faster- so we feel the contrast, and we FEEL faster. So a lot of people convince themselves that weighted punching has actually granted them a permanent increase in speed. You should check out Firas Zahabi's video on junk training where he picks apart rope skipping as a waste of time. I was shocked when I heard him say that since all the great fighters have skipped rope- it's just always been something that fighters did- but he makes some really good points that are worth considering.

I agree completely with the logic you made in the video, but would like to make a suggestion perhaps. I think one of the reasons you got such criticism out the gate was the first impression you gave the viewer with the title card. Calling it stupid outright, correct or not, will immediately put anybody who actually practices weighted shadowboxing on the defensive, and cause them to throw away your argument and further justify themselves with fallacies like the Mayweather bit that keeps coming up. The video itself in contrast, is far more professional than the title suggests, but the defensive edge the title creates takes from your credibility and anybody you are looking to realistically convince into taking up gloves instead of dumbbells may not hear the message because of it. I would perhaps go with, "Problems with dumbbell shadowboxing" or something of the sort in the future, so as not to put people on edge before they even click the thumbnail.

@@WilScoto nope and I noticed this two. I only clicked because I want to get another opinion. His explanation makes sense to the basic learner but not to an experienced thinker. So the issue here is that if you train with weights your boxing technique suffers from the fact that you trained yourself to punch with something held. The problem would be that he thinks people are so simple that if they trained like this their "techniques" become ineffective of HOW you actually perform. I've taken boxing classes and it improves your strength. Next you (without weights) shadow box with the proper technique and you'll realize without the weights as long as your not mentally disabled you can indeed throw a proper punch. Not to mention hes a selfish teacher. On average you can practice with 2lbs 4lbs and even 10lbs to increase your boxing abillity. I can use 20lbs without injuring 3 sets for 7 to 10 seconds with good time to rest In between. I should make my own video contradicting his because I practice with and without weights to "PRACTICE" form. Thus the term "meathead" is still relevant in 2021 smh.

Along with the glove work (I agree - but I also have a couple 1.5 lb. weights that have a velcro band which secures around the back of the hand, which allows for me to hold them as they are normally held, but loosely - so that, at impact, I can still clench down), a lot of people train with resistance bands or pulleyed weight, especially at the peak of the strike, helping them to focus tension there, along with isometric holds at impact points. There's also the argument of those familiar with Wing Chun, sticky hand drills, which might contend that it also is necessary to be able to understand how to go from entanglement to striking, and back again, fluidly; wherein, from grappling to striking and back and forth, there's spaces of dynamic movement across the gradient with small spaces of relaxation: for example, from checking an incoming strike with your lead hand, retaining it with your other, then striking with the lead hand as you pull your target to you with the other hand. There's also a lot to say about overload training with weapons and how such can beneficially carry over to empty hand strikes, as demonstrated here, when one learns how to properly relax before the point of impact, even while holding on beforehand :-) Enjoy: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYnEmKSsba2fgJI

Why dumbells are stupid to punch with is more accurate. As back when I originally started training over a decade ago I bought 1lb ankle weights to go with MMA gloves that I used for lessons as I never got/needed 16oz gloves. I would practice fundamentals of both movement and strikes with weights kn legs or arms. Sadly now that I started training for real again one is leaking its sand so I bought 5lbs adjustable ones. I still train slow deliberate strikes with the even heavier ankle weights now, the main thing is to go SLOW at first. Go for fastest speed you can and that's a good way to tear something as the weight is in one spot and isn't distributed the same as if it were body mass. Granted there may be scientific evidence out there for why not to wear weights at all for training (including running, walking, plyometrics) which I am still looking into, but I think the risk is worth the reward if doing it safely as you can.

Something that occurs to me is that with weights in hand, it seems entirely possible to make a mistake in minute muscle control over the object or to misjudge how much wider the hands are when holding them. Seems like that could end up in popping oneself in the chin, smashing one's own nose, or even grazing one's own temple. I would think that if this were the case that the danger of doing so would be greater with increased fatigue.

Training is mental first. If a person can't separate the thought of punching with weights from punching without weights, then they've already lost on the reason for training in the first place. The weights are just for endurance and speed. Now of course you supposed to separate the gripping the weights part. Do it when holding the weights but when you throw a real punch then that's when you do what you was doing without (point of impact then clinch fist) I agree. and don't build up habits. But holding weights in the hand helps out drastically! For instance, if originally you can throw maybe 100 punches straight before getting tired or feeling weak and can't throw anymore. After training with weights you'll breeze through those 100 like nothing. That's a personal proving fact from my own experience.

True, that's what i do as well instead of weights Plus, weights don't even increase power or speed, they merely give you the impression that you're getting those benefits. But i do use ,1,2,3,4 and even 5kg weights for punch outs to increase shoulder endurance.
@rroohhaann123ful6 жыл бұрын
5 ponds are just wrong . If anyone wants to build shoulder just don't shadow box with more weight instead pick up 15kg dumbbells and do shoulder exercises.

so ur basically saying the best paid boxtrainers in the whole world have no clue what they re teaching their fighters ... for sure. I know its maybe not the best exercise for building speed and that dumbbell training only hits some muscles. I will not say there is no better method out there to train but to say its stupid to train like that is absolutely nonsense. The best boxer in the world trains like this every day and it helps him.
@RamseyDewey7 жыл бұрын
+Philippe Pierre the best boxing coaches teach fighters to win fights. Junk training isn't winning fights. Putting garbage movement in your muscle memory is not winning fights. Plenty of gifted fighters still do lots of junk training. You won't get the same results following their lead.

Yes controversial. The weights on shadow boxing is important... From his point of view of simulating a fight, no weights are bad of course.... butttttttttttttttt if you were to throw a control jab, and return to the chin, the WEIGHT simulates the blocking off the jab technique. I believe the weights should be heavy enough so that the jab or throw can be sent without tensing up and return to the chin for better shoulder stability. And kicking with weights in your hand teaches to always consider how hands swinging down by the side when kicking exposes the head. Weights can be used to actually simulate throwing a kick while taking "damage" while throwing. Swimmers use this too. Slow things down, think of strength. not improving your game with them.

Loose until the moment of impact. Otherwise you will just slow yourself down, tire yourself out, and inflict injuries on yourself.

@@RamseyDewey im enjoying them it’s helping me with punching power and my cardio I like how they don’t stick out at all I used to punch with dumbbells and id have to alter my punches to avoid hitting myself in the face all the time the only issue I have with them is the price it’s actually shocking how much they cost I wouldn’t recommend thease just because of the price you’re talking over £110 just for 5 lbs. i think someone at the egg weights factory was smoking crack when they came up with that price 😂

BS i practice with heavy weights that i can handle up to 25 pounds which is good for power and acceleration and as long as you also practice without weights for technique and control, it works. It's all about complexity, add more exercises and different resistances to your routine to become better. Many professional boxers all state this

So basically when holding the Dumbbells you're contacting you're muscles to keep a grip on the heavy weight, however when it comes to boxing you want to keep relaxed and use your muscle contraction as an advantage when throwing the punch?

You dint always have to squeeze the fist you can be lose with holding weights i do it all time And using 1 pound weight wont do anything you have to use at least 2 pound and shouldn’t go heavier than 3 pounds Otherwise its will make your technique sloppy
Uppercuts make a lot more sense with weight than straight punches.

you strike quickly but lack strength - you should practice with weights 🤣

I don't think you should call shadow boxing with weights stupid because I'm pretty sure it works and have worked for lots of fighters, I shadow box with little dumbbell weights for endurance, first I start light with 3lbs for 2:00, then 5lbs for 1:30, next 10lbs for 1:00 then 15lbs for 30secs and finish with no weights for 1:00 and when I'm shadow boxing with weights I keep a good amount of space between my hands and the weights, I don't squeeze them.
