can I ask you how long approximately can you hold low notes (g,f,e)? and is common for tuba players to do that?

Anonymous Composer Society if you mean the G-E below the bass clef stave I’m guessing 15-20seconds played quietly and a lot less when played loudly! These notes are pretty common in bass tuba writing. Orchestral players will often sneak a breath in the middle of long notes, especially when things are loud. Hope that helps.

Julia Kufeldt that depends a little on what kind of tuba you’re talking about and at what level you’re playing at. I can’t think of many orchestral tuba parts that go much below the range of a double bass or bass guitar so if you can hit low Es and Ds (if your instrument allows them) you’ll have pretty much everything that’s low end covered.

Yes there is! It’s a rotary valve custom fitted by Mike Johnson.

Hi Tommy, I’m playing a Boosey and Hawkes EEb Imperial tuba. It has a relatively small (15”) bell which may be a bit deceptive, but it’s very much a tuba!!!
