@@picklesnoutpenobscott3165 There's no real value to these books *apart* from the fact that it was used in Myst. They're literally just reprints of old magazine articles, produced as cheaply as possible. Usually you buy stacks of these kinds of books by the *metre* to fill out bookcases for set dressing, nobody is after individual books of this type.

As someone who has made hollow out books a few time. In the future, mix up 2 part glue, 1 part water. Using a brush you coat all the sides of the book. The water will help pull the glue in to the pages to help secure it. Let it dry. Then you can cut out to your hearts content. Then once you have your hollowed out area, use the same glue to glue in the side (similar to your epoxy spread).

Myst was my very first video game EVER and holds a very special place in my heart. So many happy childhood memories of me and my dad playing through the series, solving puzzles together and and developing our own theories around the infinite amount of lore in the game. Sadly, not many people my age know it (I started playing it just around the time that URU released), so I don't get to talk about it with other people as much as I would like to. But every time someone even vaguely mentions Myst, it fills my heart with endless amounts of joy and nostalgia. Thank you for making this project! It made a weird nerd from the other side of the world very very happy :D

Same! I wouldn’t be able to do it. I haven’t made the Myst book but I have made other fake books using the boxes that are made to look like an old book. Cover it, age it and add tons of tiny details and you have a hollow yet sturdy book to use for anything.

I've only just started watching this vid, but THANK YOU! If anyone was going to do a MYST build it was gonna be you guys! This game was pre-internet, back when PAPER books were mainstream, and was such a precursor to every puzzle-solving/adventure game that's come since. The fact that technology has now caught up to what was pure fantasy back then is amazing. Who would imagine that books could talk to the reader as if you where in the same room? I took Myst down in a 3 day weekend marathon when I was in my early teens. It was a breakthrough for me at the time, having been diagnosed ADD. It taught me that I could focus, if I was interested enough. And man was that game captivating. Even more so the sequels. It has been the benchmark that I hold to my adventure puzzle gaming experiences to date. I played all the way through the third game, Exile, taking about two days each time. And Riven was such a leap forward, I actually bought the coffee table book they produced about its development, “From Myst to Riven”. I’d always hoped the world of Myst and the D’ni would reassert itself as gaming progressed, especially in mobile platforms, but sadly it seems Cyan has mostly relegated it to the “History” shelf for now, with only a simple app port of the first two games. Fireproof games have released what I think of as the spiritual successor to the Myst series in their app based puzzlers The Room 1-3 and Old Sins. Worth checking out if you haven’t.

My eyes lit up seeing this video! Not many people know about Myst, and its other 2 games Riven and Exile. I used to play the whole trilogy with my dad when I was younger, we had the walkthrough books and everything about it. I was fortunate to inherit the books and game set from him when he passed away a few years ago and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Those game discs hold hours of memories for me and I hope they do for you guys as well. it causes pain to watch it happen, but Harpers were like the readers digest condensed books of their day there were tons of them and they are still plentiful enough to not be rare on the whole. their main value outside historical is to the people hunting them down to make myst books out of them, (but it IS much preferable to build a lookalike than murder a book that's survived this long.) That's what they used for the original game prop though, so, sometimes people like to go that extra step for authenticity.

The cover is the same as in the game but the game's lighting makes it look a bit different

Have you guys tried out the new chrome paint by Culture Hustle (the people that made the blackest black)? Please do a review on it! Would love to see how it compares to the alclad and graphite techniques!

You guys saying that silicone mix looks like Banana cream, it reminded me of the Banana flavoured Penicilin medicine for children. Almost the same sort of bright, almost luminous, yellow colour!

We're big book lovers here too! This is basically a manual that can't be used any more. We're super stoked to have given it new life and love and place on our shelf where it's appreciated instead of sitting in a dusty warehouse!

The execution on this is pretty great, and the video is 3 weeks old so imagine you'll never see this, but you didn't finish the spine. It has the name on the spine, too. public.media.smithsonianmag.com/legacy_blog/10_31_2012_myst-book.jpg
