I really like the two leads of Thousand Years, so I was excited to catch the episodes. However, I’ve pretty much dropped it. It’s so slow. I can appreciate a slow burn, but it’s crawling at a snail’s pace. I gave it a good go (episode 21). On top of which, despite my love for the two leads as actors, I find that they have absolutely no chemistry together. Chemistry is that weird and unpredictable variable that has nothing to do with how actors interact with each other off-screen. It’s either there or it isn’t, and for me it’s absent here.

Min guo setting dramas aren't really fairing well for me this year either. Sadly because I was really looking forward to Thousand Years For You. I think the most difficult thing to grasp is the betrayal that Li Qin's character has for Ren Jialun, based on how her feelings for him only stemmed from physical attraction. They made it seem like there's a lot more depth to their relationship when there wasn't, and I don't know if it's their acting or the scriptwriting, but the storyline is just not doing it for me. I'll still invest my time in it for the time being, but I already know it's not something I'll rave about in the end. Loving the soundtracks, though.

You’re absolutely right. I love RJL and Li Qin, and I’m still following the drama religiously, but the plot is inconsistent. I think the ideas are there, but the scriptwriters didn’t know how to go from A to B. The 2nd male lead’s character is insufferable; I’m only starting to like him after he moves on lmao. Love the costume and the ost though. I hope both RJL and Li Qin can improve their line delivery in their next drama.

Actually, I'm surprised that AvenueX actually watched this drama and survive until episode 18 haha. I have many problem with the story as well but some of the arch is so well executed that I ended up liking the story. For an example in Episode 22 has one of the best executed self-sacrificing and emotional scene in the whole drama. Accompanied with awesome OSTs, I ended shed tears to my surprise. :P

Thank you for the review of A Thousand Years for You. I thought I was alone in my poor impression of this drama. (It seems to have a good rating in China.) I have struggled to make it to Episode 12. The storyline seems to have the main actors wandering from one place to another. So far, I haven't perceived any emotional connection between the two main leads. It just seems rather boring. It is tiring watching the female lead stomp around and throwing fits. Not sure if I will be able to finish this one.

I find your revues very informative and challenging which makes me watch your take on dramas I would never be interested in watching for various reasons. Your description of the roles that the women characters are given in Punishment is a case in point. After such a detailed account of their lack of substance, I'm surprised you would still rate this as a 'one goldmine' drama. Stopped watching Thousand Years for You about episode 3 and appreciate your detailed rant on it. What perfectly encapsulated Ren Jialun for me was your expression 'dormant state'.

I really like RJL but I've recognized in all of his romantic dramas that he can't portrait the romantic or passionate lover which the role is demanding. I understand he's married and I admire him for the respect and loyalty towards his wife. But it's really weird for the roles he's playing. The distance between the couples no matter what drama is so dominant. And Allen seems always so far away from his film partners. Look at his arms when there is a hug. Most of the times his arms are down and he is so passive, often the FL has to take the active part. It's so obvious...and unfortunately annoying. Maybe RJL should really focus on his career as a singer, dancer and actor of non-romantic dramas. I love his good looks, probably he's the most beautiful male face in the film industry in China, just soooh handsome. It's really a pity and I think he's also working himself to his bones. He is getting thinner and thinner!

Yeah I think so too, I think he should stop acting in Romantic Comedies as it does not suit him. What, with his allergy to showing real romantic feeling with his co-stars. He should focus on singing, dancing and if he wants to act, let it be in non romantic and non romantic comedy dramas. He is handsome and I believe a good actor, but not portraying romance. I think he suits either dramatic, tragedy, suspense dramas.

I was excited about Thousand Years For You. The trailer got me hooked, and I was fine with the first few episodes until I had enough of that other guy character (I know You know) which is really annoying. Some scenes also sped up, then slowed down which makes me impatient. I liked one character though, Dahai, he is my redemption in the drama 😂

I hate when fictional stories just swap gender roles - I read a YA fantasy novel that did that too and it was disgusting. I don't want men to be treated like women are irl! I want *no one* to be treated like that. worst method of trying to inject comedy into a story...

🤷🏻‍♀️I am enjoying Thousand Years for you. It one of those drama, where you just enjoy while you watch it, but may forget about it when you are done. It is light and fluffy. I think for the first 6 episodes it seem like the main female actor is really enjoying and have funny playing her character, which make me enjoy watching her. And yes, I thought the same thing when she went down mountain to kidnapped the “pretty” groom, if she was a male character, she would be just those creepy old men who marry young girl. but at the same time I guess I fall in with those audiences that thought was hilarious too. As for Allan Ran’s character….he slowly walk….just…that SLOWLY walking…

It was the main reason I stayed away from crime dramas coming out of Korea, China and (to some extent) Japan. In most cases, if not to add 'filler' plot, or being obligatory 'filler' character, or being a character to elevate the male character's strength, then they are the plot device to explain the lead characters' actions to the viewer. I eventually found that OCN's crime dramas are safe to watch because most of the time, the female characters were fleshed out properly. The first one I watched from OCN was Special Affairs Team TEN.

The gender thing. Men forcefully taking women in period pieces has been pervasive. Aren't there lots of drama/film/animation leading characters whose mothers married or became mistresses against their will? Some were sold, some were grabbed off the street, some were offered in marriage alliances... As long as there is no excruciatingly detailed depiction of the woman being "violated" or the purpose is not to glorify such deed, I doubt viewers would be much upset seeing this trope/cliche. Besides, this still happens in plenty of places worldwide.

I don't know why but the second lead of "thousand years for you" works for me like nothing else 😅 He and Dahai are the only reasons I'm continuing to watch this tedious drama. It gets specially annoying when he's acting with the main lead because it makes it very obvious that he is a more charismatic, skillful actor than the main lead and it takes me out of the story so fast. Such a disappointment of a drama.

Thank you for the detail reviews on both of theses drama. Agreed about Johnny Huang drama is male centric; however, I enjoyed it much better than Being a Hero with WYB and Chen Xiao. I like the flow of it better where as BAH is dragging and YOUKU released only one episode for VIP member which make it worst because I wanted to finish it. Agreed on your assessment on TYFY where the plot is stupid and the acting is horrible, especially Allen Ren. I watched so many of his dramas now and he has the same demeanor and facial expression. He cannot act imo, I don’t think I will watch any drama where he is the ML in the future. Similarly to Xu Kai where I dropped most of his dramas after 1-2 episodes. They both have pretty faces but cannot act. TYFY is my background noise filler while I am waiting for better drama to be aired. AROTLF - contemplating about dropping this drama because I can no longer stand Esther Yu’s nasal voice and the character that she plays in this drama. She was much better in Moonlight. It is too bad because I like Zhang Binbin.

Thank you AvenueX on your review of Thousand Years for You. I like both lead actors but you hit it on the spot, this character does not suit Li Qin, and Bai Lu also had a similar character that I found too aggressive and annoying. They both overact this type of character. I rushed to watch your review because I couldn't believe that it was RJL's real voice. I didn't notice that he used his own voice in One and Only but oh I thought I was too critical about him in this drama but thank you it wasn't just me. I am so disappointed because with his poor line delivery and flat voice, he can't act. I consider an actor good if he can use both voice and facial expression well, like the Korean actors. Now I wonder how many of these chinese actors/actresses who I like to watch can really act. I will continue to watch it but everything you said is so right. I have started skipping through all the overacting from the father to the Gu guy and FL and next to them RJL is looking like their prop who just stands there while they act around him.

Very generous in giving Thousands Years for you a half of a gold mine . Too many bad apples and it’s 22 episodes in ! Totally agree that Allen Ren is very tasteless in his character . I’ll pardon his bland voice skills but he’s not very “attractive” in this series . Sure he’s still handsome but his character or maybe how he portrays his character is very not very appealing to me . Love him in the Blue Whisperer but I thought he used his own voice in that series. Li Qin is a great actress and this series doesn’t do her any justice . The storyline is just not great which I think dulls the two main leads . She was great in The Wolf. Plus where’s the romance ?!? No sparks

Min guo dramas seem heavily leaning towards Chinese fantasy wuxia or related style, these past years, with the "Candle in the Tomb" series, and "Thousand of Years for You" + "Lost in Kunlun mountains". The ones that did not rely on fantasy were either ok for me despite being in no way historical ("City of Streamer": I loved the tango and arrow shooting scenes, among other ones like the Nanjing room scene) or huge disappointment ("Love in Flames of War", where I ended up positively hating the female protagonist embodied by Chen Duling's excruciatingly cold act. The only thing I saved from that one were the references to classic Tang poetry which I brushed up on, along the way in the first part, and re reading Tagore's beautiful auto translations of his Stray Birds that so influenced the Chinese intellectuals of that time period.) None were really true to period anyway, but since I was not looking for documentaries, I accepted the poetic license and suspension of disbelief to watch on. I am still watching "Thousand of Years for You", but same way as I also watch "A Romance of the Little Forest": both have fine actors that are not used to their best potential. AROLF is the one that grates more on my nerves and the one I don't find much to reflect on. I'm Ok with Allen's voice and cool stance as a general not completely sure of how to fit in 3000 years later and how to recover his lost lover-who-acts-weird : DengDeng (Li Qin) was bizarrely thick-headed, stubborn and bossy. I also love Ren Jialun's voice in the theme song, and many other songs unrelated to this drama, such as his first concept music album " Thirty-two Li" (三十二·立 or 32 Stand, in reference to his birthday) of April 11, 2021 - yes he's 33 now, happily married with a growing family that he takes good care of: I like that sort of person). For the curious minded and Hanyu students there is an interesting video titled “Learn Chinese with Allen Ren (任嘉伦 Ren Jialun)” on the EverydayChinese KZbin channel, posted in May this year by teacher … Deng Deng! (using recorded interview snippets that date back to 2017). (Spoilers ahead for those who have not reached episode 26 of 36, but if you can bear them, my findings may add some interest to the ongoing drama for you) The republican era style has nothing to do with realism: the story is set in an alternate world of "nine continents" which were invaded 3000 years earlier by a spirit tribe fleeing desolation in their home world and set on conquering a new one, like space travelers who would conquer new lands on a faraway planet. After long battles between humans and spirit clansmen, a general who was the champion of the humans accepted the peace offerings of the spirit clan's Saintess. They became lovers and she sacrificed her inner energy core to save his life. But her spirit was saved in a golden crow feather, and the general, having new magic powers, rested inside a mural painted in a sealed tomb, for 3000 years, waiting until she would totally recover in transmigration; DengDeng's intrusion in the tomb, Lara Croft-style, woke him up. The “marriage” of DengDeng with her rooster had me wondering when we would watch the poor hungry denizens of her Qingquan Stronghold partake in a symbolic cannibal feast of gongbao ji ding ((宫保鸡丁 - literally 'The Palace Guardian's Diced Chicken' : Look up the easy recipe to make the dish yourself, or purchase a portion at your local take-out, if you are not a vegetarian Buddhist who cringes at the idea of taking a life to sustain your own). Of course it served as a reason to have "Master Lu" be nicknamed funnily ‘concubine Lu”. In episode 17, Lu Yan is funnily criticizing DengDeng for not having respected his “honor and chastity” when she brought him to the stronghold as “heroic husband”. But DengDeng insisted to use those jokes to introduce Lu Yan in strange places, after the clownish gender swap method by which he was "acquired" (gender swaps seem to be trending in c-dramas since 2021 "Eternal Love III" with Xing Zhaolin and Liang Jie and other ones, including the literal "The Day of Becoming You" with Liang Jie and Steven Zhang). Btw DengDeng later told Lu Yan she had eaten the golden crow when she was sick in childhood and this had healed her : but this looked like a tall tale devised by her father, as we still later found out when the real origins of DengDeng were revealed. The journey from fort to city and visits to Mysterious Market and the lingering hostility towards pointy-ear alien spirit people "monsters" evidently mirrored the deplorable discriminations that are found in many human societies on our Earth : caste system, scorn of immigrants or bumpkins or "other races" or lesser able bodied people, fear of witches. Lu Yan’s heartbreak and his shedding a tear in episode 14 at his failure to convince DengDeng that she was his true love, the transmigrated Saintess Yunxi from spirit tribe, was quite moving : the prior story of Lu Yan and Yun Xi was told in episodes 12-13. Next the angelic transformation was very dreamy and heroic to look at, but the ensuing episodes left me perplexed that DengDeng could so easily become prey to the demonic antagonist Zhu Rong (Leon Lai) when almost omnipotent general Lu Yan with magic powers was watching over her. Yes I know, the antagonist was siphoning their magic qi, but still, Lu Yan did win battles against Zhu Rong in the past, and valiant DengDeng seemed undeterred and quite recovered from her magic core depletion, after a short rest while traveling to "ancient Shu". After being separated from the general who seemed strangely trusting in the loyalty of his treacherous former second-in-command who had become immortal, she was undeterred by the prospect of exploring yet another Tomb-like underground palace with a small tinder (for which I found an interesting recipe based on a mix of white phosphorus, pine resin and sulphur which when put inside a bamboo tube can indeed ignite when blown upon). What Zhu Rong was doing meanwhile is not clear: waiting to be beaten again? The supporting cast has indeed some annoying characters and filler-feeling side plots, but DengDeng's trusted Peng Dahai (Chang Long) who becomes a pretty girl when he drinks alcohol, is often quite funny. The appearance of the kun-peng magic whale in the sky had me number the instances I've noticed it in recent dramas since "Time Flies and You are Here" (end of episode 21). At least three times now until here, in the beginning of episode 12. The reason for this recurrent motif had me puzzled. Digging further, I found that it ties in with ZhuangZi stories and it is a complicated symbol of the aspiration to go beyond the ordinary, or even for absolute freedom, from what I found in a Chinese Journal of Social Sciences which examined the myth of the kun giant fish from the northern deeps that shapeshifts into an enormous peng bird the wingspan of which covers the sky! "Many Zhuangzi scholars have debated the Peng story. Lian Xinda calls it "arguably the most controversial image in the text, which has been inviting conflicting interpretations for the past seventeen centuries." The character for peng (鵬) was anciently a variant Chinese character for feng (鳳) in fenghuang (鳳凰 "Chinese phoenix"); Kun 鯤 originally meant "fish roe; fry; spawn": both the mythic Chinese Peng and Kun names thus involve word play. Lian concludes the Peng is "An inspiring example of soaring up and going beyond, the image is used to broaden the outlook of the small mind". But the whale in the sky of our dramas is somewhat puny for a full-fledged peng and even for a kun that should reside in the northern deeps until it shapeshifts to fly to the southern deeps, and its role as auspicious omen is perhaps much reduced, although reminding us that indeed, we should look beyond the electric shadows.

Such role might prevent some from being employed outside the household. Sounds better than "unemployed", maybe? I did read that widows in China can a rather hot commodity to elderly single men. General perception is that these men were taken care of their entire lives by their grandmothers, mothers, and/or previous wives. To them, marriage is the cheapest way to obtain a new 24/7 caretaker. Similar attitude is very likely in all strongly patriarchal societies.

For me using voice of ren jailun its ok because it's his first time to used, maybe someday he can master how to deliver it ☺️ Li Qin for me is quite good as the actress ☺️ the story thousand years for you we knew it is the fantasy romance story is not real so we knew that's faked that is not true at all so we can call its funny or a fantasy romance comedy 😅 i think if you want to watch, its depends how you imagine it is and the expectation you want 😅 but for me is good i want to watching it until the end hehe that's my own opinion ✌️☺️🤗

I am one of those that like this drama. I don't watch enough cdrama but I find the concept fantasy in mingguo era refreshing. Ren jialun's voice needs some getting used to but I got used to it and in fact started to like and appreciate him delivering the lines himself. I enjoy yu dengdeng's personality and how comedic she is. To me, Li Qin portrayed yu dengdeng well. Agree with you how viewers perceived the drama. I am treating it like a comedy + fantasy + romance . Came in without high expectations but ended up liking it alot.

I know this might not be a reasonable comparison, but if you consider A Thousand Years for You as a fantasy-romantic drama, you can see that the ability of Chinese producers and scriptwriters on this particular genre (fantasy+romantic) is pretty poor compared to their neighbor Korea. To me, while Korean fantasy dramas never fail my expectations, there were very few fantasy Cdramas which could impress me that much. With A Thousand Years for You, I was looking forward to something that is rational and interesting. Welp, at first, although the drama satisfied the latter part, I started to sense that the storyline might not be so consistent. I stopped watching by the end of ep 3 even though I was still curious abt what happened later. I wonder when Cdramaland is able to produce another amazing fantasy/sci-fi drama like Reset?

From a different rant video: The character seemed to be forced to the marriage but he actually wanted to do it to get close to the FL for his own purposes. There were 3 ways to accomplish his goal. He chose this most circuitous way then spent a lot of time and energy acting uncooperatively.

I tried watching Thousand Years for You few days ago (seeing there's quite some hype about the drama & line delivery on social media), but after watching a few episodes (with fast fwd) i just can't get myself into watching it. The story feels weak, and most importantly the production feels "cheap", imho 🙏🏻 I understand that a lot of money had been put into its sets, props & costumes, but when assembled + its post-production, everything looks fake & kinda low quality. At some point, it makes me wonder whether this drama was filmed many years back or recent years..? Meanwhile, Rjl's line delivery is ok for me, nothing impressive but I won't complain about it either.

I agree so much with the fact that we don't advance the cause of women by putting men in situations that are considered humiliating. Worse, these writers underline them in a humorous way. I have been shocked at times by women who hit their husbands or boyfriends and it was supposed to be very funny. The opposite would have seen an outcry.

I think so too, Allen Ren should stop acting in Romance/Romance Comedy dramas. He looks so uncomfortable in them, and is unable to create the perception of romantic feelings, beacuse of his inability to separate his profesional and personal life. I personally think that it's an insult to his co-stars for him to behave as he's been doing, its like he is saying "I don't want to kiss you or try to portray real romance with you, because I am afraid you'll either fall for me or I will."
