Nearly a century ago, when there were only a few thousand Punjabi immigrants in the United States and long before yoga became a popular global phenomenon, a small cohort of Punjabi Sikhs travelled back and forth across America as yoga teachers and metaphysical lecturers. In this talk, Philip Deslippe will discuss the fascinating lives of several early Punjabi and Sikh immigrants to the United States who in the midst of restrictive immigration policies and citizenship laws, surveillance by British Intelligence, and racial and religious discrimination, not only made careers for themselves, but created platforms to fight for Indian independence and present the Sikh tradition to the wider American public.
