Mary is a horribly misunderstood character. All I can think about with Mary is her father, Geurtena the artist. Geurtena put so much love and passion into his art and created an entire fabricated world within his gallery. He especially loved the idea of Mary. Thats why she was so fleshed out and characterized in comparison to his other art. Then he passed on and Mary had no one. She just didn't want to be alone anymore. Is that so wrong?

Besides the fact that in my first playthrough of the game... Mary literally plucks out all the petals from Garry's rose and leaves him for dead. I hated Mary so much after that. Of course I reset the game and played it until I got the ending I wanted. Ever since Mary killed Garry, I've had mixed feelings about her. Yes, I felt bad for her. But not the moment she killed Garry

Mary's story is so sad. I feel like Mary was misunderstood. In the moment that Ib found Mary's painting, Mary probably felt afraid that they would hate her since she's just a painting. So her first reaction is to pull a knife. Then Ib, startled by this, decides to burn the painting, but realizing the that it was Mary's life force. Mary just wanted friends. She didn't want her secret to get out in fear she'd be hated. That's my theory.

I think you're right but Mary will stab and kill Ib if she doesn't burn the painting so Ib wasn't exactly overreacting by burning the painting. Still wish there was a way for everyone to be happy :(

I think the part that tears me up inside the most is actually the fact that Geurtena never intended for any of this to happen. He absolutely loved his paintings, to the point that they came to life, but he didn't KNOW that they would come to life. If he did, he wouldn't have left them like that. He would've arranged for them to have a better life as best he could, especially once he died. He never meant to leave Mary alone, but she thinks he did anyway because she doesn't understand the concept of death.

This is...sad. Mary, usually seen as a villian, is tortured young girl who never had a true father. Her soul is broken and she doesn't know where to go or what to do. Then, she sees Ib, looks like she could be a friend, as well as Garry, who bears a striking resemblance to her creator. She pulls them into her twisted made up world, at a desperate attempt at freedom and life, but in the best ending, is left and burned, to stay in the cursed art gallery forever.

The sad part is that SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT SHE'S DOING IS WRONG. She has no idea that it's wrong to do what she did. She never had parents top teach her the difference. And it's implied in the game during the hidden gallery segment that Gary might be Guertena's descendant.

Okay, I see some people don't know where this song's from. It's from the game "Ib" (made by kouri), it's a wonderful game, play it and bring the fandom back to life. It follows the experiences of a 9-old girl named Ib who visits an art gallery with her parents. While looking around, she finds herself stuck in a strange, surreal world where the art has come to life. What's worse is that Ib's life is now linked to that of a red rose she picks up, and if all the petals fall she will die. Luckily, Ib finds friends along her journey. They are a man named Garry whom she saves, and a girl about her own age named Mary whom they bump into later, both of whom have roses of their own. Together, the three of them solve puzzles and try to find a way to get back to the real world.

+L i z z I imagined the little "la la"s to be the dolls singing along with Mary. The way you sound during those parts is pretty much how I think the dolls would sound. So carefree and cute sounding. Just sort of oblivious to Mary's pain, or the truth of the lyrics, thinking she's singing just to sing. Not very good friends, but as inanimate objects, I'd wager it's safe to say that human emotions MAY be a bit hard to grasp for most of them.

+Jeremy Jones When I think about that, it really makes sense. Because, until Ib and Garry appear her friends were the dolls and possibly the painting ladies. I've had a headcanon that the lady in red (and possibly the other ones) acted as either a maternal figure or older sister figure to her, and that she made the dolls to keep her company, and even though they look creepy she probably found them cute (I kinda do actually) and treated them like friends, sort of like if a little girl held a tea party with her dolls. I'd figure, even if they came to life like when Garry was in the doll room (might I say I've beaten Ib six times and only passed it once), they probably act sort of like robots or even zombies. So Mary would be singing and maybe they don't even know what she's saying, just act along, y'know? Also I think the very last verse is sung by Ib, since it is referring to her painting burning and it wouldn't be Garry cuz it's a female voice.

I had written an essay of a reply to a comment talking about why Mary should be loved, and i stand on both sides, as said in the reply, and i want to defend them both. But I dont want to rewrite the entire essay, so I copied and pasted it. So even though I stated it in this sentence, it might be stated in the reply also because I dont want to cut anything out. I can also defend Garry, although I stand on both thier sides. Garry meant no harm, and he would help at any time and way he could. Thing is, the only reason he misunderstood her is because he thought she was also evil, just because he found out she was a portrait. Even Garry was wrong for that, he had his reasons. Being attacked by headless dolls, you in that situation might of not trusted her either. Even though he responded with violence, Mary responded back with violence, thus putting her on his level. Thier actions were wrong, but thier intentions were good. I want them both to be liked, because it seems unfair. Mary, a tortured girl who lost her father, had been shocked by Garrys reaction had a reason to fight back, and didnt think much about verbal peace. She had a major reason to respond like that, and didnt think much about it, and she deserves love too. Garry, being attacked and almost killed by animate dolls, had found out about Mary being a picture, and also didnt think much about verbal peace when he attacked. Garry would not of responded to this information he found with violence if he knew about her suffering and her pain. As I said, they both deserve the same amount of love. I hope Mary and Garry fans can all realize the other side is just as correct as them. Thanks for reading, those who have read this entire essay of a reply to a comment.Even if you stood no side, hopefully you realized that both characters had good intentions with a bad reaction.

I don't think you understand that Mary is only a painting, an object of no moral value, and Garry is a human being with a life and friends. And Garry only used violence against Mary after he saw her with a pallet knife walking towards Ib. And the whole museum was dangerous so it is fair to assume Mary was too, which she was, she wanted to sacrifice Garry for herself; take away his life so she could live. Mary also pushed Ib and Garry into the toy box then took Ib's rose, which was Ib's life force, and made Garry give her his and then proceeded to rip it apart, then in one ending took the candy Ib got from Garry to prevent her from remembering him. Even if Mary got into the real world, she would still be dangerous to Ib and anyone else she came into contact with.
