Liz Bonnin is taking a look at some of the strangest animal pairings she can find. We get an amazing look at a dog who befriended a deer, a cat who looks after chicks, a capybara foster mother and lots more.
Wildlife biologist Liz Bonnin sets off on a worldwide journey of discovery to find out why animals of different species make friends with each other, and even with humans.

A former co-worker of mine, Jasper, owns a quarter section of land in an out of the way area, that he lives on and keeps cattle. The quarter is about half grassland pasture and half is treed. Jasper had posted the land every hundred feet or so all the way around as "No Hunting" to keep his cattle from getting shot. One day we were talking and he told me I should come out to his place and see the deer. Since I have seen deer before his offer puzzled me a bit. He told me his dog, a Newfoundlander named Rocky, watches over the deer. I thought he was full of it but agreed to come out one weekend in May to see the "deer". When I arrived Jasper came out to meet me and suggested we have a quick coffee and then head down to his barn. When we went to the barn we walked to the back wall and watched the deer through a window. Much to my surprise Rocky was laying down having a little snooze and he was surrounded by white tailed deer, some within five feet of him. It was a mixture of about a dozen does and maybe ten fawns. Jasper explained to me that the two or three does that did not have fawns would be giving birth within a day or so and they would have the fawns there. While watching, Jasper explained that Rocky would actually babysit the fawns while mom went off to forage for an hour or two. He also told me that if any coyotes came around Rocky put the run on them immediately and had never lost a fawn that he knew of. I asked if Jasper ever put out feed for the deer and he said yes, on occasion in the winter months. He also had a salt lick for them to use. I asked if Jasper had ever seen a buck in that area and he said no, they stayed away for some reason. It was something very unusual to see. About a year later Jasper told me he was getting a Newfoundlander pup as Rocky was getting on in years. I asked what he thought the pup would do about the deer and he expected nothing. He figured Rocky would clue the pup in that the deer were off limits and it turned out he was right. The first day or two the pup would charge after the deer and Rocky would grab him by the scruff of his neck, pull him back, and then sit on him so he couldn't move. By the end of the week the pup had the idea and never went after the deer again. In fact, there were times when some of the younger fawns would cuddle up to the pup. After a month the pup, who's name was Butch, would go after coyotes if they came anywhere near. I change jobs and I lost touch with Jasper but ran into him about ten years later. I asked about the deer, Rocky, and Butch. Jasper told me Rocky had died of old age but Butch and the deer were doing just fine. Jasper had also married since I had last seen him and had two little tykes of his own, one boy who was four and one girl who was three. He said neither he nor his wife could get closer than fifty feet to the deer because they would start to bolt but his children could walk right in and pet both the does and the fawns and play with them while Butch looked on.

I like what the gentleman said about animals, including people. We are a part of the animal kingdom, because we are mammals, and we are related to primates. Folks we need to remember that they were here first, and at one time all of the animals really did get along with each other.

the lioness most likely had her cubs killed by a younger male that injured/killed the older alpha in a domination fight. The winner then kills ALL the cubs in the pack to ensure HIS dominant future generation. this young mother was most likely so traumatized by the killing of her cubs, while still lactating, that she took on ANY baby animal to "comfort/satisfy" her maternal instinct.

We are the reason they paired up, because we were the ones who introduced them to each other. The fact they are in safety and the fact they grew up as babies, everything under our supervision. I bet, if you introduced them at a later age, they most likely wound be at each others throats. but since they grew up together, I'm not even sure the groups are aware that they're both different species. Since most animals do not know how they look and won't recognise themselseves in a mirror, it's highly probable that they're not even aware, that they're different species.. 🤗 If they were in the wild, surrounded by their families

I feel like this documented is going to give a lot of people bad ideas. Also nobody should be able to privately own orangutans or elephants, crazy that this is actually legal.

Take away the prey imperative i.e. food is plentiful then I believe more animals would intermingle. Unfortunately the need to eat and stay safe will always be an over riding imperative.

I am amazed that some people are amazed at this especially when they would take our children away or kill them right in front of the mother or bash their heads against the rocks or cut a mother open and let her unborn child fall to the grown just to kill it. Oh nevermind I see why it amazes some

Loathe seeing the Huskies on chains as it reminds me of all those chained & left in the Poles. THAT disgusts me...but, then Poachers & Hunters should be exterminated. Sadly no-one appears to care that the sheep, dog or other creature that are left when bonded pal is set off with their own species, etc.
