What a godsend these videos are. Feel so much less alone with my little Cavapoo Eric having just gone through this surgery one week ago. Its a traumatic and confusing thing for our dogs and so difficult to watch as an owner, and to adjust to as were so used to letting them have their freedom. Thank you for posting this! Our 3yo pitbull is having hers done soon and I was getting worried since I didn't know what to expect. She was born with almost no groove in her femur or tibia on one leg. Thankfully her other leg looks very heatlthy! We also got good x-ray of her hips and were happy to find that they looked healthy as well, at least healthy for a breed that's known for hip issues.

So glad you found it helpful! He is a little sweetheart, typical *VERY* active border collie though, which does make the healing process a bit more challenging. :) But we are getting there and he is doing a lot better. Will update soon.

My Cockapoo (Charlie) just had MPL surgery Feb 25, 2022 and he is finally home today Feb 26, 2022. I extend Charlie's right leg back and forth when he lays down but it seems much easier when he is standing up. Thank you for this video, it was very helpful. Cant thank you enough.

My 2-year-old BorderCollie underwent the same surgery in late July. It has been one month since the operation was done. The recovery wasn’t very smooth. He talked well in two weeks postop but has been limping on and off since then…Three days ago our vet suggested another surgery. We are still considering…anyway I feel comforted after watching your video. Hope everything goes well with Skene and look forward to the next videos!

Hi Cynthia. I will be seeing the surgeon tomorrow, so will do an update soon! It's definitely been challenging with a young puppy who just wants to run! Skene is still limping but he is at least using the operated foot. I'm crossing all fingers that we can continue doing rehab and can at least postpone a second surgery for awhile. But however it goes, it will all work out. Wishing the best for your border collie as well! It's so tough with this breed because they often don't fuss over a bit of pain, even when they really need to rest!

My husky will be getting this surgery in two months. He slipped on concrete when it was rainy one day. He was slightly overweight and never recovered. He limps when he walks. But the longer we wait for him to get the surgery, the harder playing and jumping would be for him. I’m praying his surgery will go well. Great video. Thank you.

@Natalie Wainwright good luck to you. After the surgery first few days is not easy .My dog is 8 years old and vet says I need to take her to swim 15 minutes a day for exercices,no stairs climbing etc...she will get better soon I hope.You need lots of care and pation.

@@SuzyTopAgent Yes, his one leg is 2 cm shorter because of the torsion of the luxated patella before surgery, but the vet said that dogs can adapt well to a shorter leg. He's mostly using the operated leg now, and he definitely has no lack of border collie energy!! :D

My 2 year old shih tzu has to have this surgery my mom is going to take him on the 29th his knee keeps popping out of place randomly. He hurt it playing with me I was in the floor watching KZbin on my living room floor and he came and jumped over my leg and his leg got caught under mine and he popped it out of place since then it's just been popping out randomly.

Hi I need all the help I can get! I have a 19 pound mini aussidoodle who is 1.5 years old. She is getting a double luxated patella surgery her left knee is grade 3 and her right knee is grade 2! The problem is she has soooo much energy she is very hyper and loves to jump everywhere all the time. When we come home she goes crazy jumping all over. She has “crazy hour” 4 times a day where she is unstoppable and does all kinds of crazy moves. She loves getting up on her two pack legs to get higher. Anyone has some tips and tricks to help me get through this and assure a great recovery? anything helps

With my border collie pup, the surgeon said that he needed to be sedated a lot especially during the first couple of weeks after surgery. My pup was crazy active as well. It’s hard to drug them, but they really do need to stay still in order to heal, and sometimes drugs are the only way. I would talk to your vet/surgeon about your concerns. My pup recovered well physically and I had the same concerns you have before the surgery. Also I did find the dog stroller really useful. I took Skene to a lot of places in it and he loved getting in there. Wishing you the best of luck!

My dog is on his first week after recovery and since I started to take him on short walks, whenever he gets up from laying down or sitting for a bit , he picks his surgery leg up for a slight second then puts it back down but he’s not limping when walks, my first thought is just maybe he’s sore on his surgery leg since we haven’t walked in a while but wanted to get your thoughts? Would really appreciate it!

He likely is sore. Dogs can be so stoic, and sometimes it's hard to tell that they are hurting. But I would assume there is still some pain after just one week. Is he on pain meds? It does take some time to fully heal.

@@TheDogVlog He is not on pain meds anymore, he is on anti inflammatory medication for a cough he had a couple weeks ago. So far he is not limping at all when walking but just raises his leg when laying on it for a bit as if it’s sore. Just worried me because he used to do that motion before he got his surgery and was still limping but he would limp right after doing it but it’s good he’s not limping on it right now I guess. Also seems to have gotten better at peeing on one leg which is his surgery leg and couldn’t not do that until towards the end of his recovery.

How long after surgery was his leg able to bend? My chi just had hers today and her leg is straight out and very stiff, doesn’t bend at all

ReplayTheParadox It was really painful for Skene the first week or so but more so the first couple of days. He never liked doing the passive range of motion exercises but it was a little easier after the first week. Good luck with your chi’s recovery!

ReplayTheParadox Skene’s knee has was very inflamed the first couple of days and I don’t know if I could have bent his leg, but I would call your vet if you are worried.

@@judynobida7842 mine is doing great so far. She feels 100 percent, but we still have a little over a week to go before our checkup. Hopefully she gets the ok on back to normal activities. Now she has been on a leash even in the house and on my lap so she doesn’t take off. It’s been hard to keep her down but it is definitely doable. When I talked to the surgeon he said he would not perform this kind of surgery on a dog over 4 years old. Medial Patellar Luxation surgery is what my jack needed on both knees but the surgeon said only one at a time because the risk of having something happen is too high for both at the same time or real close together. At 8 weeks which will be in about 11 days we will find out if and when we will we do the second knee. Since she has been using it solely for a while she seems to be ok with it. I am hoping it’s strong enough but probably wishful thinking. I hope this helps if you have any questions feel free to ask. I wish you luck. It is hard, but I can say my jack has held her leg up since she hurt it in December. 3 weeks after surgery in march she started to use it again and now 4 weeks later she is not even limping on it:)…….I am relieved. @@jackk8093 Thx so much for the reply and glad to hear your pup is doing well post op on the one leg. Can I ask what grade patella luxation your pup has/had. My dog is at 3 and 3.5. I do need to go back to the vet surgeon to ask more questions about risk and what recovery looks like on for doing both legs at the same time. I know our previous conversation was geared toward my dogs heart murmur and that fact that she can withstand a surgery now, but may not be able to in the future if her heart murmur progresses.
