Interesting to see some use of pressure at 0:26, 0:34, 0:46, 1:16, 2:04 - 2:15. It's gentle, but this isn't "pure" operant conditioning based on "pure" positive reinforcement to shape following behaviour. The release of the pressure on the leash, however gentle, is negative reinforcement, i.e. the removing of an aversive stimulus when the desired behaviour, following the leash (and human) is elicited. This could even be viewed as positive punishment - leash pressure reduces non-follow or ignoring behaviour. It's perfectly legitimate to do this, and a good thing for the dog. If not pressured by the leash until, say,18 months or 2 years the dog would likely have a severe resistance to such pressure, and may lose trust in the human applying it. It might be necessary to apply to such pressure for safety reasons e.g an out of control car, a loose aggressive dog and so on. I'm posting this because of the numerous and ridiculous posts that seem to attack any trainer with a dissimilar training style to that shown, particularly those presumed to use one and one only "pure" method. What we see here is not "pure".

I know this comment is super old, but what is shown at those time stamps is not pressure/release, imo it can be relegated to simple “communication”, but we could argue the technicalities all day. I mean, can one even be “purely positive”? I’ve seen negative facial expressions and ever so slightly intimidating body postures done very unconsciously in trainers in those camps... you’d have to be a robot! That said, balance seems to be almost comically obviously necessary for nearly everything in life. Moderation, discretion, careful application etc... and I agree with you regarding the frustration one feels dealing with people that use far too much black and white thinking regarding this subject. Zealots are never going to listen, though. You can argue until you’re blue in the face. It won’t matter. In my experience, the best thing you can do is work with animals and the proof is in the pudding, so to speak. Your success will speak for itself. Ideologues rarely change their mind. Even when you engage them in reasoned discourse. I would never have considered Dr Yin to be among them. She had a more balanced POV, if you study her body of work. Don’t let those that aren’t both scholars and practitioners influence your thinking in this regard!

PS-if I were the sort of person to wear t-shirts with pithy slogans, mine would read “run your dog, not your mouth” I have a feeling you would understand that. Haha.

From what I understand, the AVMA recognizes the risk of non fully vaccinated puppies going out into the world, but stresses more so early socialization in that crucial time span. Do you as a trainer and vet have any tips or tricks? Or is it as simple as staying on a vaccine schedule and avoiding grass you don't know?

It might not work with your dog, but will certainly work on your physical shape: LOTS of bending, etc, will help YOU!
