There is so much bad information out there when it comes to socializing a dog. So much time is spent on the wrong things that dogs are often challenged at a time when they are most vulnerable. By changing your perspective on socializing your dog, you can not only make the training process more successful, but you can teach your puppy or adult dog that they can be comfortable with the world around them. If you make good choices and take the right steps to socialize your dog, you can actually teach your dog to listen more reliably. With good information, you'll be able to move more quickly through the socialization process and have a more confident dog!

When my last dog was a puppy I use to play random noises on my phone. Sometimes it would be city noises, nature sounds, storm sounds, other animals, firework sounds and gunshot sounds. Just a bunch of different sounds at random times and intervals. I made it very exiting and positive. It helped me a lot when it came to actually desensitization. Just something that helped me out.

I find it BIZARRE how insecure other owners are. Like you turn your puppy around and go the other way, or you pick it up, and they act SO offended. Like how DARE you act like their dog is evil, etc., even if it has NOTHING to do with the owner or their dog. So many sensitive, self-centered owners out there these days.

I know! I was in the pet store with my 12 week old terrier puppy, and a huge English bulldog rushed right up to him. I swiftly crouched and blocked the bigger dog with my arm, just so my very much smaller puppy wasn't overwhelmed or spooked - OMG, the owner acted like I'd just insulted his first born.

I have a pitbull type dog that is a real sweetheart and I noticed many people with small dogs would do that. At first I thought it was because of the looks of my dog and was a bit bothered, but after starting observing the little dogs more I realized it’s because most of them are reactive, fear aggressive etc. and it was the owners way of trying to control their own dogs. We shouldn’t take things personal. I focus on my dog being well behaved, and if people keep their dogs away they probably have reason or it’s their loss for losing out on training sessions.

always get her energy out before you get her in the car and try to give her something to do for ex a kong w peanut butter... if she's too overwhelmed to take it just get her in the car when it is off and gradually work it higher turning the car on and slowly starting moving with it (always in short sessions then building up duration, just with time and when your dog is ready) if there is no way any of this work try to cut distraction, which means get the back of your car completely boring, w no vision outside and do the same things in this version... hope you get my point and try this out!

Probably not the right way, but my previous adopted dog was only 25 lbs and I just stuffed her in the car against her will and drove her to the nearby dog park. Very quickly she grew to love the car and jump right in! Another person I heard of took his dog to get frozen yogurt every time they went in the car and his dog learned to love car rides.

It really depends on what is causing your dog to whine and all... Is it overstimulation and excitement from looking at the cars pass in the window? Is it car anxiety or motion sickness? Either way i think using a kennel can help in both cases: less vision on the windows and what is going on outside, if kennel trained, will feel safer and grow in independence by using the kennel (start kennel training at home

Many people take their 8 week old puppies everywhere, long walks.. I think that an 8 week old puppy should get to know you first, then the house and the garden. After that go onto the street, let them hear different sounds. And then take the puppy to socialize with other dogs, and so on. People want to much to fast.

I live in countryside in Germany and here means sosializing meeting other dogs. I was very much critised, because I didn't sosialized my puppy like they wanted. I was everywhere with my dog and she is so balanced dog to compare neighbourhoods dogs and they where everyone in "dogschool". There is for sure good dogschools but I think the people there with their pups must have been misunderstanding lot of things.🤷‍♀️. I'm so happy I did right with my dog and so happy to hear this finally. Thank you!

15:30 This is so important imo! Thanks for sharing, this is also my experience with the crate. I was really against it at the beginning (omg I'm not gonna lock up my dog that's so cruel!!!) but decided to give it a go anyway after watching YT vids on this and Nate Schoemer's channel. I would now recommend crate training to everyone. It's so important for the dog to have a place he loves and where YOU can be sure he's safe - it's a huge relief for the owner. Mine (13 weeks old now) loves his crate - he had his bed first, and later I brought a crate of the same size so the bed is now within the crate. He stays in it a lot, I usually keep it open but sometimes when I have to pop out for 30-40 min I leave him inside. It's a huge relief to know he's not chewing on cables, furniture, or not flipping the TV on himself by accident while I'm away - it makes me a lot less stressed when I leave and return, and the dog feels that. He's not very wild btw so I don't fear for his safety in general, but sometimes that peace of mind (like, as you mentioned, when you have to prioritize a 2yo) is super important and all parties involved benefit from it.

Our neighborhood has a lot of loose dogs. Most of them are pretty small, but still. I worked really hard with my previous dog to get him to be very well socialized with other dogs for that reason. I'm getting a new puppy around Labor Day, but the puppy daycare that I took my previous dog to that had a wonderful lady who understood how to positively get the dogs used to other dogs, but she's no longer there. Any tips for neighborhood walks and loose dogs??

This is a video I wish I had seen when we had gotten our family dog. Now since we moved to a new area I've seen our dog regress a bit and become more fearful/reactive to new things, people and dogs. Another mistake I made was I thought socialization solely meant my dog playing with other dogs; and pretty much forgetting to reinforce calm behaviour or engagement with me as the highest reward. Now that I now better, we are working towards being calm and building engagement with each other but it is much harder now that he's older (but we r getting there slowly!) Awesome video!

My 9 week old golden is doing fantastic with training (keeping his attention span in mind). However, he is overwhelmed by the stimuli of a group of 7-8 wild kids in our neighborhood. He DASHES in other direction when he seems them together or a few specific ones. I immediately distract him and take him the other way and tell the kids "sorry, no play he is training ok". I let him interact with toddlers when they are with their parents and he does great! ... slowly but surely! We gotta pay attention to their reactions.

We just adopted a 6month old puppy end of February and have had her now about 2 and a half weeks. From coming to us only house training she has made great strides. She is still pushing the boundaries at times but learning. At the start of the week a big dog got out of his yard and attacked her on one of her daily leash walks. I now can’t tell if she just wants to play or show that she isn’t afraid of other dogs. She pulls on the leash, barks/growl and the fur on her shoulders and butt will raise up all the while her tail wags. How do we help her overcome this and keep her dog friendly?

What do you do if your puppy will only settle in her create? Our 6 months border collie does not put her self to sleep, we have to put her in her crate for her to fall asleep. It's like we've accidentally taught her; crate = settle, out of crate = 100% energy all the time. In her entire life, she has only fallen asleep outside her create ~ 10 times.

I would love to take my young dog everywhere with me but in Australia there’s so many limitations. They are not allowed in stores, it’s often too hot to leave them in the car, how do we safely transport them safely a car? Plus unless we go somewhere there’s no other people or dogs she becomes impossible to control, despite her recall being perfect at home. She’s a 6 month old Kelpie.

One of my biggest challenges with socializing my 13 week old puppy is - you guessed it, other people. A LOT of people walk their giant dogs without a leash, often even without a collarm which I personally think is super irresponsible. These huge dogs are just running around freely in a public park or street and run up to us without constraint (no recall from the owner, of course, or no sign that the dog would actually answer their command if they gave any). What is the best way to handle this situation? I'm taking my dog to a puppy socialization group where he gets to play with 10-15 other puppies of his age and size, which is a lot of fun for him. But strange dogs 5-10 times his size...?

So you guys think it's ok to take a dog (paws on the ground) before they have all their shots? Our breeder told us 4 off the floor in any public area until they have all their shots - which is not until they are something like 16 weeks, I think. Please let me know. I do feel like we're missing out on many opportunities to see new things and experiences because of this strict precaution. Our puppy is 12 weeks old and has 3 of the 4 sets of shots under his belt. Thank you for all of your AMAZING videos! They are super helpful!

Okay. I need help with my dog because, to be completely honest, my family has not put enough work into her training. She is at about 6 months old (maybe older by now) and has no socialization except for a few trips to the dog park, which didn’t end well because the dogs overwhelmed her. We haven’t been able to see anyone since because of the virus. As for her training, she knows a few tricks like sit, down, stay touch and paw. That’s all I’ve got, though I do know now that saying no calmly and firmly is working and eye contact is helping a lot with her listening. But I really need to step it up and it’s time to make a change. It’s not too late but we missed a lot of crucial time when she was a younger puppy and I need to make up for that, I’m just not sure where to start.

You have a great ability to explain things in an easy to understand manner, this is great information. Change the title though, this is all about puppies, not dogs. I got my rescue at 18 months and she was completely unsocialised, she'd spent most of her life in a cage. Dealing with the reactions from a large strong dog is very different to how you deal with an 8 week old puppy you can just pick up. She gets instantly overstimulated by all other dogs/people she sees and nothing will get her back on me until she calms down. When I first got her, it could take as long as 15 minutes after removing her from the situation to calm down, now, 18 months on of daily exposures to everything I can find, it's more like 15 seconds, but it still means there is no way I can let her off leash as she has no control, she'd charge at the other person/dog. How do I deal with that?

I am struggling with carsickness in my 5 month old german shepherd. I feel it is more the stress factor and not the motion sickness aspect. We had to drive 3 hours to get him, therefore he was in a vehicle for 6 hours as an 10 week old puppy and did throw up (yellow bile) a few times. Our vet had us give him some prescription meds hours before we had to take him to obiedience class, but he still salivates ALOT. He only threw up once when he had the med in him, but is still very, very, slobbery and very uncomfortable. I have begun to just have him in the backseat and not move the car and give him treats to associate the vehicle with something positive instead of scary. Do you have any other advice that I could try? Sometimes I turn the car on and back out but do not go any real distance. Hoping this will help him become less fearful in the future. The reason I need him to get over this is, I am having a really hard time socializing him to new sites and soungs because he gets to sick. I for one know it is imperative for a german shepherd to have good socialization.

What about about a puppy who’s living in a loud environment? My neighbors have two small aggressiv dogs which are always outside, chasing and barking at you (we have a common parking area/courtyard, secured by a gate), barking at neighbors dogs, which are also outside etc etc. besides the fact the owners are ignorant leaving them outside , how is this environment affecting my puppy’s growing? To hear all the time barks (even when we are inside our apartment), might getting in contact with those dogs when we are going outside for a walk? I am really afraid it’s harming his behavior (like being distrustful other, friendly, dogs or starting to bark inside too).

If he barks at other dogs or pulls on the leash . Walk the other way for about 5 seconds and then turn back towards the direction of the dog and repeat until he stops reacting. And then reward him with a treat for not barking or lunging

The instructor mentioned she put her puppy in the car in her crate. I think about this a lot, do you roll down the windows? how long can we leave the dog in the crate in the car? I would use a crate but my dog is too big and my car too small and the crate no longer fits in the car but he does well laying down in the passenger seat. I'm also afraid people would call the police or do something weird because they think we are irresponsible dog owners. We live in USA. I know it sounds silly but it's true. Thank you!

OK, So, I am just seeing these AMAZING videos. My puppy is 8 months old and we now have a 2nd puppy that is 3 months old. I will change my ways, but is it too late for the 8 month old? We live near a busy street and recently people have added something to their mufflers that make their cars sound like shot guns going down the road. They race around all the time. She is terrified. She sees a flag waving in the wind, She is terrified. She turns the opposite direction and sits. I ask her what it is she's afraid of. I try to asses what is triggering her. I ask her if she wants to try again or go home, and she chooses to go home. She is a 70 pound Pitt, Catahoula, Boxer mix and she is a big baby. Do I continue to allow her to make the choice or do I try to work her through it?

I'm a bit confused, you usually say you dislike walking on a leash outdoors for puppies up to 8 months, so how do you physically take the pup for outings? Do you carry everywhere or only take to people's houses? Is socialisation or proper leash manners more important? Thankyou!

@@mckennadevore8692 I know this is old, but do you mean prior to the puppy having all its vaccinations? I wondered how you would protect a puppy from parvo, etc., yet still let them experience the world. Would cleaning their paws after also help? I mean, I could have my pup on leash in my front yard, but I know people walk their dogs past my house all the time. The pup could still be exposed even in my front yard.

A puppy sitted a 3-4 month old husky i set up a puppy play date for him to socialize more with my friends puppies (3 month old husky mix 5 month old husky mix 5 month old GSD mix) they all have amazing temperaments and were highly intelligent I chose them because their puppies are literal angels compared to the husky I was caring for. Brought him over they met in a safe place but under 10 minutes of introducing them the husky puppy attacked the 5 month old husky mix unprovoked. I heard that temperament can be genetic I think this pup was badly bred idk how do you deal with EARLY puppy aggression?

Kelsey Ough socialization dosnt always have to mean being with other people and other dogs. You can socialize with different textures, sounds, and sights! Try giving the puppy tons of things to experiment with. Use bubble wrap, look up strange sounds, try new objects, and find other new things. Just make sure you socialize with new sights, sounds, and textures and hopefully you guys will do great once social distancing is finished!

@Kelsay Ough, advice here is great. In this video you see where she asks the pup to sit stay while she steps away and waves a towel. That is part of socializing and actually a part of the temperament testing as is walking on uneven surfaces, having suitcase or scooter roll by, etc. Easier to work on these without other distractions anyway

This is actually the perfect time for socialization for other dogs - Too often we act like our dog has to meet EVERY OTHER DOG in order to be properly socialized - but we really should be showing our dog that they don't have to meet and react to every dog. I got my dog when he was 1. His owner was of the mindset of meet every dog, play with every dog, etc. (Probably since he is a BBM). This causes problems for me if I try to take him on a walk and we see another dog whether walking or in a yard, he goes BONKERS because he was taught he has to meet every single dog he sees. We've slowly trained that out of him but he still does it from time to time. People too! They don't have to be pet by every person. They should be able to calmly walk by another person without reacting. Now you have an excuse to get your dog to pay attention to YOU and not everyone else when in public! (:

Hello! I had a question about crate training/potty training. I have a 16 week puppy who is not potty trained and still has lots of accidents in the house. We have tried crate training and most dogs don’t like to relieve themselves in their crate (his crate is only big enough for him to turn around in a circle, lay down, and stand up comfortably, so it’s not too big) but he has so many accidents (pees and poops) in his crate and will often times just lay in it. He doesn’t seem to care. I’m not sure what to do to fix this issue...any help would be greatly appreciated!

I watched another training video that said you should feed your puppy in their crate because they don’t poop/wee where they eat. I’ve been doing that with my puppy on his bed because he was having wee accidents in his bed and he hasn’t been having any more accidents. I’m from South Africa and crates aren’t really a norm here so his bed is the equivalent of his crate. I know this comment was from 2 years ago but maybe someone else scrolling will find this helpful. 😊

My 5 month old puppy's playing looks a bullyish. Even when he was just 10 months old he would jump up to grab our big older dog by the fur around the neck. Our dog would growl at him and tell him no and turn his back on him but the puppy, Odin, didn't seem to learn from that. Now that he is bigger and around other dogs at the park he continues to bite at the fur on their necks. Most dogs aren't bothered by it, but it appears the owners are. From your video instruction I understand I could keep a long lead on him and give him a correction whenever he does that. Or, maybe I am supposed to distract him by calling his name and then if he doesn't respond to me then I give him the correction. It really bothers me that Odin is not learning good dog manners. One of my friends said that Odin taught her dog those bad manners and now her dog is doing it to other dogs. I will give the ideas above a try, but if you have more info for me, I'm all ears.
