Hey Frank, nice video, I used to do this for a living in the eightees and ninetees before the whole industry died off. I went out when surface mount came in. It's nice to see people like you have kept the tradition going. That was a nice tip about the doubling up on the power leads I wouldn't have thought of that. Cheers.

I know this is an old video now but thanks for doing it and leaving it up. I have an Evoke 3 which suddenly died while following the updating procedure which involved a lot of plugging and unplugging the power supply. I might have a look and see if it has the same problem as the Evoke2 here. Cheers!

Excellent to see a new video from your James :-) Having a little chuckle at your rant about DAB at the start. When DAB first came out I bought a DAB Hi-Fi separate for around £ 300.00 (VideoLogic, which I believe Pure took over). It didn't take me long to realise that DAB listening experience was inferior to FM (at least in my area). Anyway, that's long gone now. I purchased a Pure DAB/FM/CD Clock radio from the local charity shop for £ 6.00 last week, bargain. Works and everything. So, hooked it up to my Hi-Fi. Bought for the simple reason I can listen to the local football team on DAB (internet stream restricted). Anyway... FM I say won't die any time soon :-) Love watching your video, thank you.

Hey Frank, Nice Video. I have a PURE, Marshall 1S DAB Radio purchased a couple years ago, still works but has lost the LED screen! after googling a bit seems a common occurrence! Would be great if you could do a video on repairing one of these issues. I don't think it will be hard to find a faulty one unfortunately... Cheers Max from Australia!

I have a Pure Evoke 3 and it's not DAB + as it was early in the evolution of DAB . However, it records and the quality is superb! I also have a Roberts DAB+ R100 but it gets dusty easily and you need a PHd to program it in a long-winded way of button pressing. Also, the signal to wifi is weak from the bedroom to the BT-Hub. So, I LOVE my Evoke 3. Just wish the record memory card could be larger than 2Gb as this is limiting. And 2Gb Memory cards are quite rare now! The display is not too bright but adequate. I LOVE how I can record programmes. DAB uses more energy than FM so in a government emergency when we rely on SW and FM we are buggered! When you ask the government where the OLD frequencies are going you when we all go DAB you get the reply that they are going to be used by defence! Great! This video is still informative though as those who are considering a £600 Pure R67 with USB record ? and playback have some insight into the faults on these 'high-end' bits of gear! Copyright? mmm if its for Educational purposes? High Court case? 'I was freely advertising but without permission your Honour?

Great video and entertaining as well as informative. I have an Evoke 1S that dosn't power up but I couldn't do what Frank does. Trouble is I can't find anyone in UK who is prepared to look at it. Nonetheless at least I understand what the problem could be. Thanks guy.

@Les Parry Yes I have a 1s that has the same problem. I looked on ebay and there are quite a few 1s radios that are being sold as faulty with the same issue. Did you ever get it fixed and what was the issue. I think Frank should have a look at this very common repair problem. Cheers...

My Pure Evoke 3 stopped working about two years ago so I bought a Pure BUG as a replacement (which cost me about £40).... on reflection I wish I had bought the BUG in the first place!

Terrific video. I am not electrically minded but found your video entertaining, especially the DAB rant. I also find DAB worse than FM. Some channels just don't have the bit rate. If it was 320 Kbps and you could get all the channels across the country I'd adopt it, but as I can't, internet radio is much better for me.

I'm not a big fan of DAB ether, although i do like some of the station that are only on DAB, so i guess its a necessary evil, it would just be great if it wasn't so crap. even though my work radio has DAB if i listen to BBC R1 or R2 I normally just put it to FM rather than DAB. i appreciate the feed back and thank you for your comment.

First time seeing this chappy -- was worried there may be the by now usual padding out waffle, little actual repair work, & lots of obscuring hands in the way of shot - there was thankfully only a tiny bit of that - but what a very pleasant suprise of a Techie! Unlike the usual robotic voiced, emotionless, egotistical sounding God-like-Genius Techies on here, who are ten a penny, Frank sounds like a normal person, with no pretense of having a Brain-the-size-of-a-Planet & unusually for me, I even like his clumsiness! Without telling any jokes, he had me laughing out loud at his accidental mis-haps, especially when getting an IC's pins stuck in him! The "suck it off" bit was played like a stand up comic, and in such a relaxed way - could Frank be the Tommy Cooper of u-tube Tech? Also unusually for me, I even watched 'til the end - not just to see the repair completed, but because I'd totally warmed to the man. And yes, I was hoping Frank would have more mishaps - bad luck for him, but so, so amusing for me .... and I loved the mini rants! So this vid' is from 4 years ago - how have I only just noticed him? I may spend the next few hours today watching, learning, AND laughing from the rest of his videos!

They're not Avanti Flow radios by any chance? I've got a big pile of them, either with no display or the PSU has died. The display is the hardest to fix as it involves removing the grille, all the circuitry (short wires make it annoying) a million screws and then the display, with a cable that is exceptionally fragile... Fun for a rainy day after the Boat Race :)

@@racitup4114 it doesn't seem to be OLED so it won't be that problem. Depending on your electronics skills you might consider taking it apart and checking the voltages inside as a basic start. Otherwise, a local repair.

I agree about DAB but the problem is there are three stations I listen to and they are all digital only. I can't get internet radio reliably in the car and I've never found an internet radio capable clock radio with four alarm settings so for me DAB still has its place.

nice one - only thing I'd say is that DAB+ supports AAC encoding which does mean better quality for the same bitrate but agree entirely, DAB can do really good quality but way too many stations on way too low bitrates makes it sound terrible... no justification for replacing FM

any clue I found this radio in a bin missing battery so bought a new one working but the power supply not working the radio works with battery but not charging battery says 49% where can I buy power switch for this radio

Well it’s been 5 years since this video and they are still selling them, I’ve had an evoke H6 for a couple of years and every station sounds excellent whether it’s because the Northwest of England has good reception I don’t know but whatever it is it blows a hole through your argument. Also when a new technology gets adopted it doesn’t necessarily mean what came before was bad.

I have the pure evoke 2 which looks pretty much the same, however although it works irks developed a back buzzing noise and it clicks loudly so at low sound levels it’s unlistenable any ideas? Or is it time to replace with new it’s about 10 years old I think 👍

I have a PURE ONE ☝️ model (mini DAB ) radio 📻 and I Lost High Volume I can only get LOWER volume ( why ) Is it the large battery 🔋 in side of it how do I reset it . I can get all the Stations. Great video, watched in entirety. Are you still doing repairs as I have an Evoke 3 with SD card. The little red light comes on and the screen remains blank, none of the buttons will work when pressed. Is there anyway of contacting you as I am in Somerset? Cheers

We use DAB+ here in Australia, I do like it, but the sound quality isn't fantastic, apparently it's better than DAB, but in my opinion it's no better than FM in terms of sound quality, the additional channels are nice though. I think DAB+ radio is doing somewhat well here in Australia. I do have a few DAB+ radios around the house, but I spend far more time listening to AM and FM radio than I do DAB+.

Hi James, I have got a Soundmaster SDC4200TI DAB+ radio which stopped working. Power supply is ok. It just lights up the display for a few seconds no matter what you turn on (AUX, CD or Radio) but that´s it. No sound or no text in the disply. Any chip gone? Do you have any idea what to check?

Is there a PSU schematic available? I don't think I'd be happy bridging the fuse with solder though! I've got a pile of these PSUs, all from Pure Avanti Flow units. Most of the time these end up in the skip due to a failed display (OLED has worn out) I have a few displays from China ($10 a pop) and a now I'm fixing up the units but finding the PSUs are hilariously dodgy, blown capacitors, shorted out MLCC that sits across the air gap... Looks like a poor design and amusingly, it certainly doesn't provide the 75W RMS promised in the advertising for the Pure Avanti Flow... Pure -> Scam ...they do sound OK for what they are.

Here in the USA we have "Pride Radio" which is also mostly just dance music. I am gay but that's not my favorite kind of music, so I don't listen to it. And BTW, it is OK to play short clips of music, less than 28 seconds, without triggering any Content ID copyright matches.

Is it still working? thats true the Evoke 3 had some unique features. however, unlike the Evoke 2S the 3 cannot be updated to DAB+ unfortunately. that's why you very rarely see the 2S for sale because people have no need to replace them unless they fail.

Of course there is a possibility that someone else in the past has been messing around inside it? so you don't really know if the hot glue and other sub standard stuff is a result of the way the radio was put together in the first place or whether a third party was responsible. the only way of finding out is to open up another 2S that's in perfect working order of course! for what they cost though, you would think they would be manufactured somewhere other than China! with cheap equipment 'Made in China' is expected! but not products that cost that much!

Totally agree with you. Mostly only the BBC in Stereo now and low bit rate Mono on all the other Stations. Internet Radio kills it for sound quality now. Yet the Clowns who run the Country want to still turn off FM.
