Finally Made it to Hanoi! (OMG I love this city) and first thing I am doing is a Hanoi street food tour in the neighbourhood I am staying in. Ngoc Ha! like me.
Before we begin, be sure you ALL drop into the comments and say hello to 6 year old Bryanna Valenzuela in the Philippines.
In this video I meet up with 1/2 of the @GoArrive KZbin channel. Kevin I start off at Phở Bò Gốc Gạo for a bowl of Hanoi style beef noodle soup. Maybe the best Phở I have had in Vietnam so far.
maps.app.goo.gl/L8qNMZJuiumFG...
- Bun Cha 108 for a her out of this world namesake, Bun Cha. While I was there I noticed that they had another dish that one of you recommended. @hdng3245 recommended I try a dish called Bún đậu mắm tôm. Vermicelli with fried tofu that is dipped into a salty and umami fermented shrimp paste. Be careful, it is extremely strong.
maps.app.goo.gl/LWBpzvAWLmHz8...
- Thủy Xèo 166B for a quick bite of Bánh xèo. Vietnamese pancakes stuffed with pork, shrimp and fresh veggies. Rolled in a rice paper wrap these are the best I have had in Vietnam.
maps.app.goo.gl/7sRLoMzMMoKEM...
After leaving Kevin I head off for more street food in the alley's where I am staying. Have I mentioned how much I love this area?
- Cà phê Đặcsản. My favourite cafe I have found in these winding, bustling alley's of Ngoc Ha. Quick stop for a Vietnamese espresso and Vietnamese coffee. the Vietnamese coffee has a bit of sữa đá and is super refreshing. Awesome coffee here.
maps.app.goo.gl/Kzji9GbRWNJSr...
- Minh Anh Bakery. This bakery has the sweetest family in the world. I will give them my money every opportunity I get. Today I tried their sự kém đại and kém miếng các loại
maps.app.goo.gl/cQkfEzv4HaCFg...
- I end this tour with a random stall on the side of the alley. Sometimes he is there, sometimes not. Super friendly and the tastiest thịt heo quay you will ever find. Thit heo quay being roasted pork belly.

It's much harder to do here than in the Philippines because many places don't even have google maps locations. Ca phe dacsan, is only a pin on google maps based on the address. So if you come, be sure to use the link I provided, because ca phe dacsan does not exist in this area if searching for them on google maps

I don't know why more people don't hit up those types of bakeries...they are the Vietnamese version of French bakeries. And for the price you got, it's a freakin' steal! I'd be at those types of bakeries and the coffee shops all day every day. BTW, did you try the egg, salted, peanut, coconut, and yogurt coffees while there? I wouldn't say the coffee is watered down in Vietnam...some places may make better coffee than others, but watered down, not really. And even a bad coffee shop is probably way better than Starbucks in a given day. :)
@PureDetour
@PureDetour 2 ай бұрын
I didn't say watered down, doodahgurlie. I said some of the chains tasted like coffee flavoured sugar. There was a large chain in Saigon that the Cà phê sữa đá was more like a sweet drink than a coffee. Barely any coffee flavour to it. Super tasty, but more of a refreshing drink than a coffee. Whereas ca phe dacsan as a sua da that is bery strong coffee with just a hint of sweetness to it and it is fantastic. I usually drink just black coffee, so while not a fan of Starbucks, I will do a dark roast from there if that is all that's available. But wait, they do a coffee here that has egg, salted, peanut, coconut, and yogurt all in one coffee? Where the hell do I find this? I have done, coconut, egg and salt coffees all independently though

I'm surprised you've not had good banh xeo as it's a Central Vietnam dish that is also very popular in HCMC (BTW, it's more like a sizzling savory crepe than a pancake). Both places should make great banh xeo. With that said, the one you had in Hanoi looks more like a Central style banh xeo since it's smaller and wrapped in rice paper.
@PureDetour

Yup avoided putting it on camera until now. Filmed it three other times but they just weren't very good. 1 in Saigon and 2 in Danang. In fairness, I am sure there are a million good ones all over the country. This is just the first good one that I have had.
@doodahgurlie

@@PureDetour I'm surprised the one in Saigon wasn't good. But I'd say Hoi Ann or Hue would be good places to try it...but surprised Da Nang doesn't make it good considering they are right there next to Hoi An. You should try the nem nuong Nha Trang in Hanoi even though it's a Nha Trang (Central Vietnam) dish.
@PureDetour
@PureDetour 2 ай бұрын
That happens in every city and in every country in the world. If I don't like it I don't show it. So it got shelved in the Saigon and Danang to join 80+ hours of footage I have that nobody will ever see. But like I said, I am sure there are 1000's of places in both cities that sell excellent Banh Xeo. I just happened to find not so good ones

It's absolutely honest in what you see, I just don't show you what I don't like. 90+% of what I do is street food like Banh Xeo. I refuse to shit on a small business owner that is only trying to feed their family. If I were doing reviews of 5 star expensive restaurants I would have no problem shitting on them.

You should have gone to a place that specializes in bun dau mam tom because the place you went to, that is the most basic bun dau mam tom I've ever seen. Check out the video from Max McFarlin when he had it in Hanoi. Also, the mam tom should be mixed with other stuff, not eaten straight up. Typically, you mix in some oil, sugar, etc., and you mix it until it's foamy before using it as a dip. A good platter of bun dau mam tom should include a ton of stuff...and a great one should have blood sausage as part of the platter.

Cut me some slack here.😂 I had never even heard of the dish before it was recommended. The shop I was at specializes in Bun Cha and I love the family that operates it so I chose to give them my money instead of heading 30 minutes away to another location. And in fairness, Bún Đậu Mắm Tôm literally translates to rice noodles, tofu and shrimp paste, which is exactly what I got. 😂 As to the Mam Tom, I have eaten fermented shrimp pastes all over the world and I love it. In the Philippines they use their version of it on freshly sliced sour mango. No mixing with anything else. Straight shrimp paste on the sour mango.

@@PureDetour The Philippines isn't known for great food based upon the majority comments from people who have traveled there. Vietnam and surrounding SE Asian countries that aren't the Philippines always level it up (compare the fertilized duck egg...the basic Vietnamese version uses salt, black pepper, and lime as the dip and fresh herbs to chase it down...then there are versions with quail eggs and tamarind sauce...in comparison, the Philippines uses a lot of vinegar and salt only with their eggs). In Vietnam, fish sauce and mam tom are almost always never eaten as is and undiluted. It's usually mixed with other things when used as a dip. You think dipping fruit into shrimp paste is good, you should try the versions from non-Philippines countries. Way tastier. If you're going to go by basic translation for food names, then you'd be wrong. That's like saying bun bo Hue is just noodles and beef from Hue...which is totally untrue as there's so much going on in there than noodles and beef.
@PureDetour
@PureDetour 2 ай бұрын
That is a very narrow minded view. The majority of people that go there say that? Really? You have read comments from the "majority" of 6 million+ annual visitors to the Philippines that said the foods not very good there? I along with Mark Wiens, Sony, Drew Binsky, Anthony Bourdain and a host of others would strongly disagree with that sentiment. What I do believe you have read is blog posts and the like from ass hat westerners who have written about food there. The same people writing this nonsense are the same ones you will find in McDonald's in Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh, Manila and Kuala Lumpur. There is zero truth to it. These same things have been said or written about Egypt and it is also untrue there. The Philippines(and Egypt for that matter) has outstanding food. That is not to say I like Filipino food better than any other SE Asian nations because I don't, but to say there food "isn't very good" is ignorant at best. But if it makes you feel any better I also prefer Malaysian and Thai food to Vietnamese. But that doesn't mean I think the food in Vietnam isn't good. It's outstanding As to your shrimp paste and balut rant, let's clarify a few things first. More often than not, the vinegar and salt combination used with balut in the Philippines is a coconut sap or palm vinegar that is infused with chili and garlic. So it's not as boring as you make it out to be. To add to that, the vinegar and salt combo they use in the Philippines is far superior in my opinion to the "salt, pepper and lime" (it's not lime by the way, it's kumquat) that is used in Trung Vit Lon in Vietnam. Next, your mention of other "SE Asian nations" (as if I have never been to any of them) always level it up. How about Malaysia(I spent 4 months there) and sambal belacan? It is often used as a condiment for plain white rice in Malaysia. Now if you mean levelled up by the chili and calamansi they add to the shrimp paste... guess what? It is the exact same thing as bagoong in the Philippines(the Philippines adds tons of garlic too) which tastes identical to what I had with the bun dau mam tom Or Kapi in Thailand. Levelled up there is lime juice, chili, sugar and fish sauce. Often found as a dip for fresh veggies or dried fish. So in Thailand it may be a bit levelled up compared to Malaysia or the Philippines, but what i had with the bun dau mam tom wasn't straight shrimp paste either. If it was I would have never been able to dip into it. I would have needed a knife to spread it on the tofu I absolutely love the fact the you are trying to help educate me on Vietnamese food, because God Knows I need it. But "try visiting other SE Asian nations" is a bit condescending considering I have been in SE Asia for almost 2 years now and this is not my first trip to this region of the world. I have probably been to more SE Asian nations than you. And "try shrimp paste in non Philippines countries" after telling you I have eaten shrimp paste all over the place, well I don't even know what to say to that.

@@PureDetour Hit a nerve, I see. Well, I stand by what I said. And no, I don't read blogs...not very many people do that anymore. I read comments in videos I watch and Reddit and such. Never said Egypt doesn't have good food, I bet they have great food as I love Middle Eastern food. But Egypt is a crap country to visit - ask any honest vlogger, including Sonny who made videos about it and Max McFarlin who didn't come out and say it until you ask him specifically. I compared the fermented duck egg with the BASIC version of trung vit lon. BTW, it's not kumqat, it's calamansi. They call it kumquat, but it's not. Traditionally, lime was used. And if the Philippines was all that great, why aren't Sonny and Mark Wiens living there? It's a no brainer they would have gotten loyal built-in audience that speak English. That's pure $$$ they can bank on. Instead, Sonny chose Vietnam (where few people speak English) after having lived in S. Korea and traveling the Philippines and Asia. Everyone knows Bourdain loves Vietnam. I've no problems with your preference for Thai food, no arguments there. You being in SE Asia for 2 years vs me being born in Laos and spent my childhood there then was in Thailand and spent my older childhood years in the US. If you saw my spice cabinet, you'd know I'm quite knowledgeable about food...BTW, if Filipino food was so great, why isn't it more popular in the US considering there are so many that live here. I see it's popular with Filipinos, but considering the advantages of their knowledge of English and Western ways, why aren't they making big waves with their food? If anything, I see them in other ethnic content creators begging them to make Filipino food. So the creators pander to them because eyes=$$$.
@PureDetour

This just gets more and more ridiculous. Not very many people read blogs anymore? You're right, it's only around 4 billion people daily with 2 million blog posts posted per day. My blog still gets tons of hits and I haven't posted anything new on it in over a year. Does Egypt have it's issues? Sure. So does Morocco, USA, Vietnam and most other countries. North Africa in general is a somewhat scammy area of the world. But what Sonny experienced was his own fault and he knows it. Whether he wants to admit it or not is another story. To say it is a crap country is once again ignorant. And nowhere did I make a claim that Sonny, Bourdain etc. didn't love Vietnam. The only point I made was how all of those mentioned loved the food that you claim "isn't great". You know, the WHOLE POINT of this conversation And it is kumquat they have used in everything here. I have not even seen calamansi here. It may have traditionally been lime, but If you think they are using calamansi here, I would say you have no idea what a calamansi is. The only resemblance a kumquat and calamansi share are the skin colour and size. Flavour wise a calamansi is very much like a lime and a kumquat resembles an orange. I have not had anything with the multitude of dishes I have eaten here but kumquat. I grew up in Florida and had Kumquat trees in my yard as a kid, so I am very familiar with them. I like how instead of addressing your claim of "Philippines doesn't have great food", you chose to go with why Sonny and Max decided to live here and not there. Well who knows why, but I can guarantee you one of those factors was cost at the time they settled here. The Philippines is at least 3x more expensive than Vietnam. Vietnam is probably the 2nd cheapest country I have been to after Türkiye whereas The Philippines is the second most expensive country in SE Asia. Your last point is next to useless. I'll counter for you. The Vietnamese population in the US is 3x that of the Japanese. How come there are 4x as many Japanese restaurants as there are Vietnamese restaurants? See how sophomoric of an argument that is? And still none of your points address your claim that "the Philippines doesn't have great food". Have you yourself ever had Filipino food? I'm not questioning your knowledge of food. It is obvious your love of food is genuine. You have demonstrated your knowledge numerous times on my videos and once again I thank you for all the great recommendations and corrections you have offered. I think you're a bit misguided though to shit on another country for their food based off of what you read on the internet. Lastly, while deciding to go in another direction (egypt sucks, why people live here, the US) for some God unknown reason, you still didn't address shrimp paste in other countries that this whole conversation was built around. I countered with examples from both Thailand and Malaysia (You know, "non 'Philippines countries"). Maybe you're just deflecting and if so, well played👍
