I admit, it gave me a warm feeling to watch the Yankees, Mets, and Padres collapse the last couple seasons, especially the Padres - a roster filled with punks. I guess the owners' takeaway from this video will be: so we need to spend more money then...?

it also gave me a warm feeling seeing that 254M texas won the world series while lower payroll teams like tampa bay and baltimore were early exits and oakland, cincinnati and pittsburgh didn’t make the playoffs bc their owners didn’t give AF about their teams 😁

Personally, I enjoy your content, but this video had some major flaws in it. Each of those teams had major injuries that directly affected their ability to complete due to having below average depth. You made that clear in your presentation with Mets and losing Diaz but failed to mention that with the Padres and Yankees. Machado couldn't play in the field for a third of the season due to a back injury which greatly took from his value after being the runner up for the MVP in 2022. Yankees were competitive until Judge missed over 2 months because he literally ran through a wall to make a catch in LA. That lineup was absolutely abysmal without him and destroyed any chance of making the postseason because they had way too much ground to cover once, he came back. I agree that you can't buy championships, but your video squarely pointed out the failures of teams that spend to compete when this league has way too many owners that are capable of spending much more and rather pocket the money, because they couldn't care less about winning. Also considering the Rangers turned themselves from a laughingstock to champions solely based on the fact that they spent close to a billion on improving their team undermines your premise. Once again, I love your content and appreciate the hard work you put in, but this one is just a miss in my opinion.
@bjblitz27018 ай бұрын
Interesting points, however, it's almost like buying high for older players with tons of wear and tear already on their bodies might be factoring in to those injuries...
@jdsthird8 ай бұрын
Padres just sucked, injuries had little to do with it. They fell below .500 on May 12 and remained there for the rest of the season until the last weekend of the regular season. Most injuries happened later in the season. Funny how the Dodgers and other teams had disastrous injuries all throughout the season yet managed to win 100 games. Padres will never be successful until they fire AJ Tingler Preller. 10 years of dysfunction and chaos is enough,
@ricobaker4708 ай бұрын
@@bjblitz2701 Yeah but we've seen multiple young stars go through injuries as well Tatis and Bellinger dislocated shoulders. Acuna torn ACL. Robert Jr was injured in 21 and 22. Buxton has been injured every year of his career. There sadly aren't anything you can do about injuries. Thats why depth is so important to have actually 40 man talent to back up the paid stars that every team should be gathering every year to compete.
@llhean37538 ай бұрын
@ricobaker470 the point is money doesn't buy championships, aaron judge is an example though its not his fault, giving him that much money means that ownership is less likely to spend other places, the only exception I can think of is the Padres and that is probably going to change with the death of the owner and A.J. preller's overall incompetence
@adu38308 ай бұрын
First of OP, the Rangers didn't "buy a championship" that's a very lazy take. Sure, they gave big money to Semien, Seager, and Degrom, but let's go around their roster shall we? Leclerc, Jung, Tavares and Carter all came up through the system. Jonah Heim and Adolis Garcia were acquired very quietly in minor trades. Dane Dunning was acquired for an old lance Lynn. Garver was grabbed for Isiah Kiner Falefa. Nathaniel Lowe was a acquired from the rays. Scherzer was grabbed for a couple of good prospects and had NYM eat a bunch of salary. Their is also more out there. The rangers established a core around the big time guys they signed. Secondly, injuries can't be an excuse, plenty of teams go through severe injuries and the good teams will find a way to win anyway. Depth is important. The example that comes to mind is the Braves winning the world series missing Acuna and Morton.

I would say the only bought title for the Yanks in that is 2009. Payrolls were not that much higher than other teams even if they had the highest! Baltimore had the second highest payroll in 96. Only a few million less then the Yankees
@trevormaymusic8 ай бұрын
Teams that refute this video: the current World Series champion Rangers and the consistent contenders Dodgers who you skimmed over. Also to note how many players got hurt on the Mets (forgot to mention Verlander and Scherzer got hurt). This is the type of BS that Fenway Sports Group is telling the Sox fanbase while they have been in the basement 3 of the last 4 years. You need a mix of high payroll and a quality farm system to be successful (the only exception is the Rays) and it’s being shown every year.

The compensation system for players is all sorts of messed up. Doesn't matter the sport, you succeed with strength, reaction time, and healing from injury. All of these skills deteriorate with age. Free Agency allows players more control over their careers than they ever had previously. Unfortunately, they are being paid handsomely on their past accomplishments with a hope and a prayer they won't turn into pumpkins overnight. Once they've secured generational wealth, it's easy to see how complacency could set in. Motivation aside, free agents are almost universally over 30. Aches and pains set in. There's seven years (ish) of hard, heavy mileage on their bodies. Free Agency is for finding a stopgap solution or a complementary piece. Trying to build the entire roster using free agents is foolish. I'm watching the Red Sox wander the desert right now. Spending huge in free agency doesn't work. If the goal is to field a successful team you need young talent and an excellent support network to develop that young talent into the best versions of themselves. You need to pour money into scouting. You need depth.
@komickaze858 ай бұрын
I'd say that money doesn't win championships. I think that getting quality players who may not be the big headline is more important than trying to buy a championship. Usually, the team with the highest payroll doesn't win it all. And last year, a ton of low payroll teams made it really far in the playoffs or won their division. I agree that there should be a happy medium, developing homegrown players while also getting a couple players a year via free agency. Or trades. Look at the Astros. They don't spend crazy money, but they have a great core and sign a couple players each offseason. They also make good trades. We'll see what happens this year. After tonight, baseball will be most people's primary focus (other than basketball maybe).

@tbone211588 ай бұрын
Well Carter was only up for a short while(62 AB) and Wyatt wasnt on the team at all. I was referring to the entire 2023 season. So even if you think they couldn't have done it with Carter, you do not think the Rangers bought the championship? All you have to do is look at the payroll and the free agents they signed especially the SP's.

Spending big money worked perfectly for the Yankees in the 09 off season and they benefited from all the money they spent that same season when they won their last world series. They spent a lot of money in free agency in 09 but it was well spent because they spent it on things the team needed most. They singed CC who was the Best pitcher in baseball coming off a CY young season and a deep playoff run and Burnnet who was the 2nd Best starting pitcher available and Mike texiera who was the best position player available.

Conversely.......the 14/340M deal for Tatis Jr will go down as the most team friendly contract of all time. Here's why: - Tatis is entering 2024 at age 25 and is under contract until 2035 - Padres get all of his productive years.....and he hasn't peaked yet - Tatis runs like the wind and his ability to dodge tags is crazy ridiculous - Tatis won a gold glove in RF in a position he's never played before, which speaks to his desire to compete and succeed at baseball - Even though trading Tatis would be sacrilege to us Padres fans, that he is so young means that if the right deal came along.....even at age 30 for instance....the trade haul would be tremendous - Tatis loves the sport so much and wants to improve.....he plays winter baseball when he doesn't need to. This speaks again to his desires to excel (us Padres fans do daily prayer sessions to the injury Gods) Did I say he's a young 25 yet? Oh I did. Tatis Jr is the rare player (like Machado and Harper and Gooden) that made it to the Show at age 19 and stayed there and had great careers. I expect, with good reason, that Tatis Jr and Harper will have similar numbers when their careers are done and both get into the HOF. And no I'm not ignoring Vlad Jr. He's a different ballplayer and has dropped off in successvive seasons. While I'm not trying to body shame him......he needs to get on programs and get his weight under control. Since the two are from DR maybe Vlad Jr can buddy up and do offseason workouts together.
