I’ve found myself collecting dead nettle and dandelion daily the last … 4 days now. I’ve made jelly, tea, used as salads and dehydrated a handful or several at this point but I’m gonna keep going through the weekend when my lawn gets mowed and I should have enough to last the year !

Wild onions? AKA Ramps. YUM! I can hardly wait for them to grow this spring. Our growing season here in the mts. of Va is a bit later getting started than you's is. You should gather some of those ramps and make fried taters and onions. It's one of our favorite things that we look forward to in the spring. I also use some in canning my salsa and pickles. They have such a fresh taste. Like you said...something the good Lord gave us just for the picking. Hope ya'll have a great Easter weekend. God bless! He is risen!!

I'm blessed with just a small patch and its just coming up cause its been so cold here its growing just beside my 2 comfrey plants. Its so funny cause I got one plant from mom's yard and now I've transplanted it each year to 5 plants and transplanted from the 5 too 17 now . I've been putting it on the inside of my fencing too keep the weeds down and in the l shaped flower garden. I use it for tea for my garden plants every 2 weeks. I was so blessed that my rhubarb came back up after neighbor sprayed weed killer on it and black raspberries.

Are the seeds and flowers usable on their own? I’m new to this, trying to learn a plant at a time, so I have a gallon of the nettle dried, I burnt up my henbit, put it on parchment paper on lowest setting in my oven, but it burned in maybe 30 minutes? Next time I will use dehydration method, or let it dry first a week or so on my table. Thank you for posting, it’s a blessing to learn the old ways of healing. ❤

How did you learn what 'weeds' are beneficial and how to identify them. I always have a ton of purple weeds in my yard but I havent a clue what they are and we are allergy prone in our house. Thanks for sharing

Why are you removing the leaves and flowers, is the section they are attached to not good in the oils?
@OurSmallTownLife9 ай бұрын
The stems are edible but tough and the medicinal properties seem to be more highly concentrated in the leaves. It's also more practical for storage as you can keep a higher quantity in a smaller space. I did, however, go ahead and dehydrate on the stem this year because I needed to get it done faster, and I will just remove it from the stem as needed. I feel like using leaves is a more common practice especially when dried so it helps me with my measurements as well.
@Earth2Flo-v6f9 ай бұрын
@@OurSmallTownLife thank you, do you think the seeds have medicinal properties, I did my first batch today, oil infusion with avocado oil, put in on low heat for two hours, in a bowl, put that into pan of water, it was the only thing I managed today, I need to order some bees wax pellets for my salves. I’ve watched so many videos on this one herb, purple dead nettle, geeez, a lot of time trying to learn something new to me!

Why don’t you wash them before dehydrating?
@stinkeye4608 ай бұрын
Using a microwave oven dehydrates faster. You have to use non recycled paper towels or a cotton cloth to lay herbs on. I generally just wash and dry them and store then in a baggie in the freezer. We have three freezers.
@Anibor_Good_Enough_Homestead8 ай бұрын
I microwave won’t dehydrate them, it will cook them.
@stinkeye4608 ай бұрын
@@Anibor_Good_Enough_Homestead It has to be done in a certain manor so it doesn't cook. There are videos on KZbin. I tried a dehydrator and it took several days. I should have bought an expensive one but couldn't afford one then. Since most of what I cook requires fresh herbs I just freeze them and use what I need.
