An analysis / review / meandering rant about Session: Skate Sim.
Session is the best modern skateboarding game, and the next big step in skateboarding game design. It's a freakin' massive innovation and triumph, and can stand proudly alongside its genre peers of Skate, Skater XL, and the Tony Hawk 1 + 2 Remasters.
9 god dang people made this god dang thing. How is that possible.
GO BUY SESSION NOW. DON'T WAIT FOR A SALE. Because Session f#*&ing shreds.

EXTRA VIDEO NOTES:
1.) I should've added an asterisk at 3:15 to credit Skater XL as well, for innovating on the "two sticks" idea. They beat Session to the punch by almost a year. I even had a mention of XL and what it did written into the script right there initially, but I trimmed it because I wanted to keep the focus more squarely on Session for the first chunk of the vid. Bad call, didn’t mean to come across like I was either dumb or deliberately obfuscating the narrative or some shit.
2.) I called the first level of THUG Philly when it is in fact New Jersey. Derp.
3.) Thanks to everybody for bringing Thrasher: Skate And Destroy to my attention! I'd genuinely never heard of the game. Seems like it experimented with a pseudo-catch mechanic prior to Session. Same with OlliOlli.
4.) Forgot about OlliOlli World and Skate Bird when listing off recent skateboarding games in the intro! We're swimming in so many of these things that I actually forgot a couple. We can't forget Deadly Premonition 2, either. That's the ultimate skating game.
Many thanks to the KZbinrs whose footage I utilized to put together this video alongside my own footage:
GREEN SCREEN, 45resolve, ipgames, Naetr, CCS, Ribs Man, RetroDetect, Jaasss, Swixtor, Experience Luxury Travel, wispp, Luis Mora, Benedict Gameplays, HelixSnake.

Left a note about Skater XL in the video's description! I misspoke at one point in the video, implying that Session is the first to do the two-sticks control scheme method, when in fact XL beat them to the punch and released on Early Access almost a year prior to Session. Credit where credit is due!

@@TheDealer1228 I only found that out from some comments on this video lol. Another thing I missed. It’s crazy tho, I’ve played base Skater XL on PS5 for 50+ hours, and I’ve never once used the “click the stick to manual catch” mechanic. It’s nuts how XL completely hides that system and also makes it totally useless because you auto-catch 100% of tricks as long as you release the sticks before you hit the ground

One of the big things about the two stick system is that the turning of the character is not directly controlled by the sticks anymore, rather the triggers. Which is just wild, especially when you INCLUDE the other system of right or left bumper to get out of lip tricks smoothly. Truly an actual sim
@theninjamaster67
@theninjamaster67 Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily the sticks can throw you into a power slide and you can use either the sticks or the triggers to control your spin in the air when going for grinds which is important info to keep in mind cause power slides are fuckin sickkkk and you can use a powerslide to throw into a revert if you don't wanna double tap the trigger.

I would like to add that session has a unique feature that I havent seen before in a skate game and that is wear and tear. When you buy yourself a skateboard and skate the hell out ouf it you soon gonna realize that your griptape starts to get dirty and the graphics on your board starts to get scratched. depending on what kind of grinds you like to do most your board is gonna get scratched in that area the most. Also the wheel size you choose is gonna impact how the board handles just how it would in real life. And the wheels get dirty too after a while

All the Devs Heard was the Masses Screaming Bullshit From the Rooftops much like How Battlefield 4 was and will be the last Good Battfield Until a Team of 9 Devs Makes a better one that actually is made by a team of Devs who listens to the communinty and not the Masses.......

This video made me laugh, made me cry, made me confused a little bit, but ultimately made me stand up and cheer. Your experience is identical to mine with this game (40 hrs + 0 achievements), I could give two shits about the story content etc, the systems involved in this game are so mind-blowingly advanced that I'm surprised Creature Studios actually went down this road, but honestly I'm so happy they did. I've spent 2 days (6hrs total) trying to hit one line at federal plaza and it's ALWAYS worth it. Like sometimes I have to skate off to the side and breakdown my line one trick at a time, but that feels like real skating to me. I wouldn't want it any other way. I play with manual catch, no auto grind, and every possible option enabled (extra big drop input check) and even if I find it daunting at first, fuck it bring it on. I know that it's possible so I keep going and it feels AMAZING just landing the smallest things sometimes, so I can film a clip and create my own skate part (by the way you forgot to mention the video editor which is even more revolutionary I feel, tough as balls but intuitive once you get used to it) I agree that the old THPS games are pioneers, and I played the hell out of them once upon a time, but honestly I've never felt anything like the way I do about Session when it comes to skating games (And ya I played the hell out of Skate 1 and 2 also). For anyone complaining about the controls, You just have to keep at it if you have the time, and honestly try to keep the settings as realistic as possible, I watched an IGN review where the motherfucker had his skater ollieing like 6 feet in the air, and it just wasn't session, like seriously just go play Tony Hawk at that point (no judgement). Also you swear just the right amount, don't ever let anyone tell you different.

(NO ALL JUDGEMENT) To anyone who tries to be a poser and play Session like its some Arcade trash skateboarding game of the past can honestly go back to the past.... One big thing that needs correcting. To catch the board with manual catch it is NOT down on either stick. It is down on the stick that is associated with the foot that is in the front at that current moment, or up for the stick that is associated with the foot in the back at the current moment. The easy way to remember is this; Whichever foot you want to catch with, flick that foot towards the center of the board. You can also catch with both feet at the same time. You can catch my flicking them in the opposite directions as intended but it runs the risk of causing a weird jump animation when you land and it just won't look right.

Man i can't tell you how just...mmmmMMMMmmm!!... good this game is!! Last night i was riding around the city and was looking at the layout, and thought damn they could have done something to" gamify" it up a bit... but then i remembered what i had loved so much about skating! It wasn't hitting up the big skate park in town, it was about making that little porch gap with a hydrant in the middle into a dope spot. To make each "session" your own..when paired with the difficult but super rewarding controls, this truly recreates the frustration, beauty, infuriating and rewarding nature of skateboarding. I'm 35 now and a full time family man, i barelt step on my board nowadays, but this game was just the thing i needed to recapture that feeling from back in my teen years!

Expanding on the catch mechanics a little: flicking down isn't the only way to catch by any means. Actually, the direction you flick towards affects your catch. Flick down on your back foot, you'll kind of rocket the catch a little and probably land back wheels first. Flicking up on your back foot catches it more level. Flicking down on your front foot makes your skater catch with the front foot, and levels it out since you're flicking towards the middle of the board. Flicking up makes the board nosedive a little on the catch and odds are you'll land front wheels first. These things are super useful for flipping into grinds or manuals. Now, on top of that, you have this extremely cool option as well no one really talks about... You can flick to the SIDE to catch. This way you can twist your hips and tweak your legs to catch the flip at up to a 90 degree angle. Do it with only either one of the sticks and you'll have the board dive towards whichever foot you're applying pressure to (helpful for grinds and slides), flick the other stick to the opposite direction right after the catch and hold them simultaneously until you land to level it out. This way, you can get super steezed out flip tricks with 180 body rotations by flipping and only turning 90 degrees, and finishing the rotation with the sideways catch. Especially backside flips and frontside flips look super good this way. Also, with the new powerslide mechanics, this way you can also get good looking reverts on your landings if you keep holding the trigger. You can also do hella tweaked out shifty flips this way by catching to the opposite direction of your 90 degree body rotation, meaning that instead of finishing the rest of the 180, you'll just tweak back to the stance you started from, canceling out the rotation. Seriously, go play around with that. Makes even flat ground skating super fun.

So glad you made this review especially after IGN gave it a 6/10. The way you described it was perfect. Exploring this game's open world, finding a nice spot, visualizing the line you want to do on it. Then bailing 50 times before nailing it to get that amazing clip for your montage. That is Session.

@@YuckFou0x0FFFF idk the final game just doesn't feel Polished. I had a lot of fun with the old demo that came out a couple years ago, but even just trying a simple grind in this final game, doesn't work most of the time, and turning in air precisely is annoying. Don't get me wrong, it's a very good looking and sounding game, but I think with this final version they over corrected and added too many features, and lot of the times it's not fun, just frustrating when you're trying to do a complicated trick or line. However when you're just cruising around, doing basic flat ground tricks, and basic mannys and what not then it's pretty chill and kinda fun. I'm a skater IRL and love a challenge, but it's not as satisfying to have that in a video game where I just maybe want to land a trick in 100 tries, not 1000+ tries sometimes, which I've actually done in this game.

@@hater69eleven Try setting your grind alignment higher if you feel like it's too challenging to make them connect. You can adjust grinding friction if you want to simulate a waxed or dry surface. There are 4 different types of body rotation modes, (Pressure, Speed, Timed & Manual) Auto Revert option, (Anti Bail) as well as an option to increase or decrease max rotation speed. If you want it to be arcade, you can make it arcade. If you want to be hyper realistic, you can do that as well.

@@hater69eleven*** The option called "Casual Grind" is what helps you connect grinds easier. Grind alignment helps you to stay in a grind.

Skater xl is easier than session to make the tricks even using the almost same system, but the realism on session is so incredible that makes me insist to play because of the satisfaction when I finally nail it

I'm at 680 hours and really just played as a time sink during early access. But since 1.0 fixed a lot of my issues I've been going in on it. They've arranged the missions in a way where you can approach them as skill checks or training missions. This game with the right investors can easily launch this game into the cosmos.

Not to mention all the maps are unlocked at the start. And u don't have to pay attention to the missions. You just log in and skate! I love this game. I thought I was the only one that put so many hours with 0 achievements. Lol I lied I got 1. Lol but still.

The thing they need to work in is fall animations. If you fall as realistically as you skate… catch yourself, fumble run and then fall… straight bomb falls, face plants. Would create an entire “hall of meat” on its own
