Heritage Trout Mapping Episode: 3
In this episode, I search for North America's rarest trout, the Paiute Cutthroat. Although this catch does not qualify for the California Heritage Trout Challenge due to it being located outside of the Paiute Cutthroats' endemic waters, it was still one of the most challenging and rewarding trips I have ever made.
Trout Description:
The Paiute Cutthroat was discovered and named in 1933. It is a subspecies derived from the Lahontan cutthroat, with its most notable characteristic being a complete lack of spots on its body. This unique characteristic separates the Paiute from all other cutthroat trout.

I caught Paiutes many years ago on silver king creek as part of a work crew removing the fish prior to rotenone. Probably the ancestors of the fish you caught.

So pretty. They look like wild lahonta cutthroat trout. I’ve been on the search for them. I found a small creek high in the mountains of Nevada with a small population of lahonta which was not easy to find. Super awesome catch!

The Paiute Cutthroat is a closely related subspecies to the Lahontan Cutthraot. The most notable difference is the Paiute Cutt's lack of spots. Congratulations on your find. I love fishing those high mountain creeks.

Wonderful fish! It's hard to decide whether or not even to intrude on their space, don't want gov't involved to get a census number, but if possible get some eggs and have them in a few different places.

What was the name of the creek again? I couldn’t make it out haha. Looks like a lot of the SoCal streams I fish, hard to access, skinny and shallow.

Oh. You said notellum hahaha. I was surprised you would say where you were, but like you said most of these spots are too hard to access for anyone that’s not a hardcore catch and release trout freak. I don’t think anyone would go to that effort just to have 2 tiny trout filets. Great vid!

@@GoFishingOften same. Found this place and one other that is a meadow along a well maintained trail, except it’s been a while since anyways gone there for them hopefully will be productive this summer . I found this stream that you are at and seems to be the most frequented for this fish. Just not sure where to park and actually start the hike up. Would love to know how close you can actually make it on the road as I’ve heard other say they had to turn around .

Thank you, congratulations on your discovery and catch! I did contact the head biologist in the area before the trip. I couldn't believe it when he told me this area fell under standard trout regulations, which means you can catch and retain up to 5 trout.

I saw a bunch of pronghorn down in the flats but not much else. But, of course that doesn't mean much because I had difficulty seeing the trout in that small creek haha. They were well camouflaged and seemed to lack any sort of predator response instinct.

Excellent job of catching one of the rarest trout alive!! From what I understand these fish number in the low hundreds. and that is total. Also, congrats on the Heritage slam of six species. Since you are into these endangered fish , and finding them to document and show those of us that are unable to hike like that anymore, I have to ask you a small favor. PLEASE Stop picking up these tiny jewels just so you can get a good shot of them. PLEASE leave them in the net. Try to hold them in, or close to the water and you can then wait for a good shot to show itself. If you do these things, you will have all the time in the world to get that money shot, dig? Even with wet hands , these tiny trout are fragile and wet hands help but you can still kill them. Thanks Buddy, praying for your safety as you chase down these unicorns!! Tight lines

So I read the comments before I watched the video - yeah that's NOT how you handle any salmonid, let alone the rarest trout on the planet probably, unless you're planning to eat it. In the words of William Munny, "Well, you sure killed the hell outta that fella today." That said, kudos for burrowing all the way out there and for NOT NAMING THE WATER 👊 they got to earn it like you did!
