Push lawn mower brush cutter hack

Been thinking about doing this with a cheap walk behind mower, beats the hell out do spending 2k on a used dr all terrain mower

This is definitely worth a try. Clearing brush sucks. I would still take out the saplings with a $50 battery chainsaw or sawzall instead. Sharpening the blade beforehand also should make it go a lot faster and not stress the engine as much. Also could help to do it in the winter when a lot of the leaves are bare.

That's a great idea, you could also cut a clearing out around the area that you want to eliminate and in the fall of the year set it on fire. Be careful leaving the shoots of the saplings because you could end up puncturing your truck or atv tire on them!

did that to an old craftsman. Very hard on the engine. You need a strong mower, or go slow as to not stall it out. I did not go slow, and threw a rod. It was free so I didn't care, but it's a heads up for anyone else who wants to try it.

Yes. Unless you have something to reinforce the mower it won't last long anyway.

If you could find a big enough saw blade you could do it on the mower as well. 💪 But then your saw blade would probably cost twice as much as the lawn mower itself. 🤷‍♂️

@@shooshinejonnie I've got them all sizes to re-use in a pinch. I have to resharpen them to cut lumber, which is a pain; but they should go through a live sapling without much trouble. Once the carbide tip wears off, they are quickly dulled again. If I have time, I fetch the saplings out with a 12 ton come-along, then cut them up while they are still green to season for firewood. If they are too close to a rock wall or foundation, I cut them off as close to the ground as I can, then dap some stump killer on it. Riveting chain saw teeth on the old blades would work too.

You can definitely make it last longer if You have some welding skills and beef up the front end. These are all stamped and so when you cut some out it definitely weakens it.

Most sprays are absorbed through the foliage. Spray first, then cut after they're dead. If you don't, they'll just come right back.

Since you started cutting brush with your push mower how many times in a year have had sharpen and replace blades?

Once. Since this was the only time I used it for this purpose. It actually started to come apart at the seams because there were no seams left. I didn't have a welder at the time but I would now reinforce it. I would say, if you're not into the rocks, probably touch up the blades every or every other cutting. It all depends on what you're cutting.

Yeah you are on the right track, looks ok, a weed chopper usually lowers the speed of the blade by adding in a larger puller over a blade spindle mounted out 12 or etc from the briggs shaft, it'll take more rigging than this, but the high rpm of the mower does have a harder time in weeds for some reason, ?, and FYI everyone, the ryobi battery operated mower we see in the ads, last 2 hours on a full charge.

Why using a spindle set up it does spin slower but the torque is being multiplied. Kind of like trying to take off from a stop in 1st gear vs overdrive.

I had one. Came with a 9.5 hp Briggs, had casters on the front, and was self propelled. And with the separate shaft for the blade using the belt and pulley, it won't bend the motor shaft if you hit something too large with it. I didn't need it where I live now and sold it to a guy who works on them. But it was very powerful and much easier to work with than a normal push mower.

Because of the way it was made, not very good. It did ok for this one time. I never used it again as it was starting to fall apart. A welder and some scrap steel would have worked wonders.

Whats the make and model of this mower? I've been looking for a 6.5hp rear wheel drive or just push mower, I'm looking to build something similar to break down a 20' tall thick brier nightmare on a steep hillside. The plan is to remove it from the hill with a handheld brush cutter, onto flat ground then mulch it with something like you've made here. Hows it do as far as mulching the material up once its been cut down? Thanks for the vid.

If I remember correctly it was a Scotts brand. As far as mulching, it didn't do that great, because once the long stuff has been laid down flat then it's hard to get it to cut.

Unfortunate it doesn't chop the laid over stuff but beats spending $3000 on a brush mower or renting one for $100+ a day. It should still get the stuff processed down enough to then come back over it with another regular mulching mower.

@@essinem4130 oh yeah. You can run over it with another mower if you want. As you see in the video what I was starting with and what I ended up with. It got most of it. Mine did what I wanted it to do so I left it. I used this mower because it's the one that was in my shed. You could do it with just about any mower.

It's easy to do. However the cheaper mowers are engineered in such a way that everything that is there is for support. You can still do it but just beware that some things will fall out/apart. Good luck.

A regular push mower just pushes the weeds/brush over not allowing the blade to come in contact. Therefore no cutting takes place.

@@crpth1 thank you. It did chop it up pretty good. There were no big chunks left. When I cut down a sapling I picked it up and dragged it into the woods. Most of what I was cutting was briars.
