"WELL ACTUALLY..." *Pushes up glasses* "As the big-brained, PhD holding, TED Talking, Vsause video binging, Rick and Morty fan that I am, I shall now proceed to save the day by answering your questions! The cup is actually being both pushed AND pulled, just in terms of two different points of origin. It is being pushed in terms of moving in the opposite direction to where your hand is in relation to the cup (the hand is the origin of the pushing), and it is being pulled in terms of moving in the same direction to where you are in relation to the cup (you are the origin of the pulling). This is the reason why the door is labeled 'Pull', it's because the door is being pulled towards you and we tend to refer to a person as 'pushing' and 'pulling' in terms of the person themself being the point of reference for simplicity. As for the Superman example, the only way that Superman could push you and have you go all the way around the Earth right back to him is if the force of the Earth's gravity was also acting on you. If Superman's push was the only force acting on you, then you would move in a perfectly straight line and fly off into space. So in truth, you're both being PUSHED by Superman, as well as PULLED by the Earth's gravity. For the next scenario, it depends on how you're putting your shoe on. From the way it's presented in the animation, you're both pushing your foot into the shoe with your leg, as well as pulling back on the shoe with your arms to prevent it from being pushed away from your foot. For the next situation, Newton's Third Law states that every action has an opposite and equal reaction, therefore the amount of force your arms are exerting into your pushup is also being exerted into the Earth. Meanwhile, Newtons Second Law states that the force being exerted upon an object is proportional to both its mass, as well as the resulting acceleration of the object (i.e. Force = mass x acceleration). If the same amount of force from the pushup is being applied to both your body and to the Earth, but the Earth has much more mass than your body, then the resulting acceleration (and therefore movement) of the Earth will be much smaller. This is the only way the equation stays balanced... ...As for whether or not clapping is 'unsuccessful' pushing, it depends on what your goal is."

It's sorta a "is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable" thing. The answer is that it's both, although pulling usually implies the presence of grip. You can push on a completely flat surface, but we need a hold of some kind to be able to pull. In science, the laws of motion dictate that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, so when you push something, it's pushing you back with equal force in the opposite direction, and whichever has the higher inertia, or resistance to change, wins, resulting in the other moving. Pulling is the same, but in the other direction, whatever you pull pulls you too. Two forces meet, and they either cancel each other out for a net zero outcome, or one is able to overpower the other's inertia and make it move.

@@hitmewithacar4725 “Vegetable” is a category that only really exists in the culinary world. Botanically, tomatoes are fruits, but in a culinary sense, they are vegetables. You don’t prepare tomatoes the same way you cook other fruits, you prepare them more similarly to how you prepare vegetables. That’s why the issue exists. Our categories aren’t always consistent and forcing everything to be consistent won’t work.

Well tEchNicAlLy speaking, on a physics standpoint - a force is LITERALLY just defined as a push or a pull. And usually a pull force is something that involves the force of Tension that usually involves the pulling of two sides, which is why a string is usually used as a common example in grade school. But the inner mechanics of Tension force and correlation with applied Force in different circumstances is a concept which is pretty difficult to grasp. On the other hand, a push force is mainly a mechanical force/applied force which impacts an object in one direction and causes it to move (not to mention there's usually a Force of Tension on the opposite end). And sometimes, depending on the situational circumstances of a problem, the magnitude of one force could equal another and vice versa. So in short, the idea and mechanics Forces are kinda complicated lmao

Omg this reminds me of my “when does ‘this’ become ‘that’?” debate that I had years ago with my family. Because one evening I was laying on the couch, sick with a cold. I pointed to the tv remote on the coffee table. It was fairly near by, but I was just too lazy and feeling too sick to get it myself. So I opened my mouth to ask my sister “can you get *this* for me?” but instead, last second, I said “can you get *that* for me?” because if I said “this”, I’d be admitting that it was close enough to me to just grab it myself. So by saying “that” it implies it’s too far from reach. So how far away does an item have to be to be called “that” and how close does it have to be to be called “this”? Hence, at what point of distance does “this” become “that”? I was so stumped by this, that I straight away asked my family this question and no one could come to a solid answer lol Edit: A lot of people in the comments are using examples of “this” and “that” in different contexts such as “this is unbelievable”. But to clarify, this is *only* when speaking about a physical item, not a situation. It’s only a debate on a point of distance from you to tangible items . For example, if I were to set my phone down in front of me, I’d say “this is my phone” but if I start taking steps away from my phone, how far from it do I have to be to then have to say “that is my phone”. A variation of this debate can be, when does “here” become “there”. i.e.: “THIS right HERE is my phone” / “THAT over THERE is my phone”

The classification of a square is that of a rectangle with distinct properties (i.e a rectangle with all equal sides) The distinction that a pushing force that is being excerpted towards the person is classified as "Pull". Push: the origins of the force follows the object that is being pushed in is movement Pull: the origin of the force precedes the object that is being pulled in is movement. Due to the nature of the language, objects are identified as a whole, even if the action on the single element is different, so if you are pushing the door handle you are still pulling the door. The distinction between the pushing and pulling sides of a door can be based on the initial movement, pushing or pulling, made with the intent of operating the door.

@@savvivixen8490 From the prospective of the water molecules, they are being pushed, however I suppose that, because the finger is already in the water and the water is uncountable, the movement's objective is not to push the water, but rather to go through it. …okay, let’s try and dissect this: - For the cup, two versions. 1. you need to pick a frame of reference. And I think the Pull definition needs to add “or origin of force”. I’d say the frame of reference is the hand or origin of force. And with that frame of reference you were always pushing in every situation shown. Maybe we should add “usually through a grip” to the pull definition. 2. Or all of this is negated because when you pushed to the side you were also pushing away from you just in a different direction of away. And you were pulling when the cup goes back to you, and of course pushing when it’s going in front of you. Agh. - THE DOOR. Yes, you are pushing the HANDLE, but pulling the DOOR if you stand to the side like a weirdo. If you PULL the door normally… let’s go with Version 2 of the cup response… You’re pulling…. - The superman clause, *sigh*. Okay, so the definitions for push and pull were based on Euclidean geometry, so this is pretty unfair. Nevertheless let’s go: The the instant Superman… PUSHES you, you START going AWAY from him, so it’s a push even if you wrap back around because we don’t live on an infinite flat plane. In fact, to decide push or pull one should reimagine the geometry where the objects are to follow Euclidean geometry and THEN think about where the object would go in relation to origin of force.

I don't think we should add "or origin of force" to the definition of pull because that's the exact reason we can differentiate it from push. In the cup example i'd say he didn't pull the cup towards himself but rather he pushed it because the cup was trying to move awy from his hand. For the door I'd say pushing the door handle away from yourself makes the door handle exert force on the door thus becoming the origin of force instead of your hand and because of that the door handle is pulling the door. The superman example in my humble opinion is pushing, because we can push things towards ourselves like the cup metioned earlier and the action started as pushing so I think it stays that way for the whole jouney
