I think people need to look into where they are and where they want to be in a broader scope. The opportunities missed are usually the ones you dismiss because of the perception of things. Meanwhile, someone else does it and creates an avenue other people follow. Use your uniqueness and your gifts to create lanes other people follow. You can be the leader of you instead of the follower of many. Be authentic and stop trying to be your 'favorite' artist or producer. Those people already have themselves...find you...and be yourself. You are one of one.

The main take away is as a DYI we need to understand the music business. There is always 2 business models in every industry. B-2-B and B-2-C. In his case he was making a B-2-B trans action. Having a Copyright alone wouldn't have prevented that. There is a minimum of 3 splits from my understand in every deal. The Songwriter or Composer. The Publisher and The Masters Owner. We as DYI'RS need to know the difference especially if we plan to have a team to handle it. Don't get me wrong, I don't know everything but this I do know. We need to know the rules of the game we are playing in if we want a chance to WIN! Thanks for sharing this priceless lesson Curtis.

The same exact thing happened to Del the Funky Homosapien with the Gorillaz track Clint Eastwood. His Producer told him to just lay a verse down for some thing he was working on. Had no idea what it was for and had zero interest in doing the record. He did the record, 6 months later his homies hit him up like "wow! You killed that Gorillaz record!". I keep seeing commentary on this video, but still: 1. 1 mil (500k a person) for that song is a nice piece of change, considering they were hot, but not like, Beyonce, hot 2. Most rappers will not have leverage over a company like McDonalds - they can find somebody else to do it for 1 mil... they hardly would budge on a royalty %, knowing the type of $ you stand to make over time. 3. that 1m changed their lives and opened doors, which is what it was supposed to do
