I just found your channel this morning and I really like your videos. Keep it up man

Hi. I really liked your video and I want to add just a few words. Now in MMOGs there is no longer the spirit of adventure, there is no longer the desire to explore, there is no longer socializing and all the elements that allow you to INTERPRET the character, to give him life.
@ReasonablyRetro8 жыл бұрын
+Alessandro Mazzetti Your spot on. There is no need to adventure with fellow players of your faction! Wild Star was on track with encouraging players to explore maps, but fell short when it came to higher levels. Exploration falls to the way side as most MMO's progress due to the need to grind dungeons or complete end game content. Even GW2 gives you rewards for map completion but the path there is miserable.

Great video, thought-through and refreshingly un-ranty.

Everquest created a strong community, which drew people in. It was also difficult, which gave all the players a sense of shared accomplishments. But, dumbing down games seems to be the way to go. Even EQ succumbed to dumbing down. Don't know if anyone has the balls to make a difficult, challenging game that forges a community. Good luck to us players.

+Derwood Bowen one of saddest moments in my adolescent life was logging back into EQ2 and finding that there were no more class trees. No more character development. I hope we are given something beautiful in the future.

I completely agree with you. Bring the character progression back! Bring back defined character classes. Give us choice and the ability to stand out. I should care which character is in my party with me. I should be able to see that he is doing his job amazingly cause of his noticeable impact on the fight. Great video man!

Nice video, nice point of view. I think you should check Tree of Savior, Character development and progression is really solid, has an old school feel and makes your character really unique. Good work!

I have to agree , I am a Everquest player still started playing a little before 2010 and love it , I am a role player and happy with the way they fixed it , PvP is a choice , you receive a duel challenge pick accept or not and this is a good video :)

Interesting... I've actually recently done a video about no longer feeling "unique" in MMORPGs. I never stopped to realize that maybe the lack of personality inside of your character might just be what does contribute to that as well. I guess, much like you've stated yourself. There is no way in changing the way that current MMORPGs are changing, just towards hoping that future games, more niche games, will introduce that feeling once more. Thanks for the 8 minutes of your thoughts! (Listened to it at 2x speed, you speak slow enough :3 (that is not a complaint, that is just my lack of time and patience)) --- I'm interested to see your opinions on stuff in the future!

+LokiFM I really appreciate the feedback. I do talk slow for a few reasons... one, I am actually reading a script; two, I am a slow talking southerner by birth (though I've lost the accent); and three, I have a considerable number of "english as second language" subscribers. So, yes, you are absolutely right to pick up on me speaking slowly and over-enunciating throughout my script.
@LokiFM8 жыл бұрын
+BitterClingerDE Completely reasonable! I could see why you would do it in that case. English is not my first language, I am from the Netherlands... Although I do speak more English than Dutch on a daily basis, that's mainly because of the internet-age we live in. Also script-wise, you've done really well! It sounded more like you had planned out what to say than specifically have a script. Personally I can't make videos with "scripts", they just make me sound like I'm reading the newspaper to a friend - I just ramble on and on... and then cut something coherent together :'P

I really appreciated your video! You have some great points. I wanted to agree with you that PvP has destroyed a handful of RPG elements within MMO's and it is such a bummer. Being able to create a unique character that evolves over time has been lost to the dark ages. With games like CoH gone and Vanilla WoW there is no pride in earning something unique or spending the time to create a character that looks like no other. Instead we are given boob sliders like you said and then are expected to skip through mid lvl content to the end game! Lets all cross our fingers that micro transactions won't ruin our precious MMO's of the future.

I personally think that the trinity was the worst thing that happened to MMORPG's. In real D&D it didn't exist, though people seem to think it did. The Cleric was able to heal, yes, but also wear heavy armor, buff, and generally be able to be a "tank" and "DPS" if needed. A warrior could try things beyond just being a meat shield, and with proper gear use almost magic like abilities, and never "taunted" wolves and zombies (like they'd care what you called their mom). A rogue used a lot of abilities outside of combat, not just a sneak attack bot. To fix MMO's, I personally believe two things should happen. First, the world needs to not be the same events over and over. A good single player game you do things once, which makes it more impactful. Eve is legendary in that things happen once, and then are gone forever. This would create the feeling of a living world, rather than a theme park. Second, the meta must die. The meta creates the cookie cutter builds that everyone uses at "end game" that everyone rushes to rather than enjoying the journey. A smart skill based system, ala Star Wars Galaxies could really help with this. But as long as game developers are just making Wow clones, and often shoddy ones at that, we won't see a flowering of what an MMO could be. Instead, we will see gamers play for a little while and then get bored. tl;dr: meta and repeatable quests sucks, as do one trick pony roles.

I feel like you missed a very big point in this video. If you are talking about roleplaying, you are missing the biggest point, community. The reason WoW was so popular is because people knew eachother in that game. The reason it's not popular is because every one is playing by themselves. Games are becoming too easy now, with almost every quest in the game being soloable. This destroys the community. People are no longer asking for help to tackle quests. Not only that, but WoW added in dungeon and raid finder. Now you no longer needed dedicated raiding guilds, or even talking in chat to recruit people. You just queue up, and beat the dungeon with out ever saying a word. Now MMOS can be beaten with out saying a single thing to any one. There is no community, no role playing. This is a sad development because of money. To make more money, you need a larger audience. And to get a large audience, you need to have an easy game that anyone can play. Developers need to realize this destroys the game and they just end up losing more people than if they had just made it a difficult game that requires connections with other people. Community. Hopefully developers are learning from the rise in popularity of Dark Souls. That yes, you can make a difficult game that isn't for every one and still make a large amount of money and please the fans.

Good info and presentation. The only thing I disagree with is that the genre is thriving. Its most definitely not thriving. While other genres are growing, its choking and actually shrinking.
@TrainingDummiesYT8 жыл бұрын
+anEverquestPlayer01 I admit that I don't know what the numbers are in terms of revenue or total players for the genre. I take the rise of new games like Pantheon and the failure of games like Wildstar as evidence of a thriving market. The logic being that niche games like Pantheon wouldn't even be tried in a dying market, and re-treads like Wildstar Online aren't tolerated by a player base with a wide range of better options. I go into more detail on that subject in this video, if you're interested. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaXKZGyombaKnKM

I don't really agree with the whole Skyrim thing. It's basically an MMO that you don't play online. Bland characters, paper-thin story and uninteresting crafting. Even the combat is not that impressive compared to everything else that's out there. I think Skyrim is so populair because of the potential it has, but it honestly rarely lives up to it.
@redknight48058 жыл бұрын
While i agree with the title, pretty much everything you said in your video as well as examples I completely disagree with. First of all Skyrim is a horrible example of a roleplaying game. Its even questionable if it is a roleplaying game to begin with, considering the amount of dumbing down Skyrim has incorporated in comparison to Morrowind and Oblivion. Secondly, you talk about character development purely as a mechanic, which tells me that you dont even understand what "putting the RPG back in MMORPG" means. Character development and combat as you put it has almost nothing to do with roleplaying. What makes an RPG a true roleplaying experience is a believable world with its own lore and culture, believable characters you interact with, choices and consequences, multiple solutions to the same problem, 0 handholding, etc. When you look at MMORPGs today (and even majority of single player games such as Skyrim and Witcher 3), there is waaaaay too much hand holding and dumbing down which is one of the reasons why these games never managed to really capture me from a roleplaying perspective. For example: - follow the arrow" quest design (Both Skyrim and W3 allow you to follow the arrow on your compass to be able to solve quests. This takes away ANY sense of exploration and makes the world far less believable than it otherwise would be. A good example how a true RPG would do it is Morrowind where instead of a magical all knowing arrow you get instructions how to navigate from one point to another.) - lack of attributes (You talk about character development, yet neither W3 nor Skyrim allow you to play for example a dumb barbarian who cannot use magic. While in W3 i can forgive this, because it is a story driven game with focus on Gerlat, in Skyrim this is a slap to the face of any seasoned roleplayer. In Skyrim, its perfectly possible to be good at everything, or to change your skill focus to something else on the fly. While this is very convenient, it also does not make any sense from a roleplaying design. A good roleplaying game such as for example Arcanum, would let you play a character with low intelligence, which would make persuasion through dialog impossible, because you are too stupid for that. At the same time, such a character would make a poor magic user. Needless to say, such options do not exist in newer games, and everything is skill based, which makes for very poor character development). I could go on, but I dont intend to waste more time on this. And do not get me wrong. I do enjoy Skyrim and W3 for what they are - glorified action adventure games with some very rudimentary rpg elements. But I would never use them as examples for putting RPG into MMOs.

Thank God, I thought I was alone in saying, "Wtf? Skyrim?!?"
@redknight48058 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, but unfortunately, voices of reason are nowdays in a minority. You ask milenials to give you some RPG examples and you get answers like Skyrim in 90% of cases. Its really sad that these games today pass as RPGs.

I really miss the complexity of the DnD titles. Ever since physical media ceased to be put out alongside the game discs, the games have been shit. I loved pouring over the one inch thick booklet that came with NeverWinter Nights. Planning out a character made it really feel like it was your own. There really was a variety of ways to play the game.

Why do you not monetize your videos?
@TrainingDummiesYT8 жыл бұрын
+Japa Freak Well, there are a few reasons. First, I have a good job and make decent money. You need A LOT of views to make money on KZbin, and I recognize that I don't have the natural talent that a lot of successful KZbinrs have. Second, I can and occasionally do vanish for 3 months at a time when I'm busy with life or taking a break from gaming. Finally, I'm happy when someone else enjoys my work and ideas, but I make videos about stuff that I think is interesting. If others find it interesting, that's awesome; but I never want to think about "views" or "revenue" when I decide on a subject for a video.
